And here, my friends is my entry into the challenge! It only took me 45 minutes! (It doesn't show too badly though) Anyway, enjoy:

    Wow... that was fast BaronCoop

    Anyways, this is the first post of the Master Index. There will be monthly update posts as well, so that all of the new Fics added can be listed in a more obvious manner, as well as easier to access.

    MsLanna i've found that whatever i write i can't see it as funny, and as you said screams not funny. yet when others read it they love it. *shrugs* maybe you ought to let others be the judge.

    Official Update

    I think it's about time to change the subject, and begin delving into a specific type of humor, now that we know what makes us laugh.

    [hl=black]New Disscussion Topic[/hl]

    Specific type of Humor:

    Slapstick/Physical Humor

    What about physical humor makes you laugh? What about it doesn't? When is it too much? How do you go about writing it? What are some of your favorite examples that you have seen on the boards?

    Feel free to quote from stories freely, and it is in fact encouraged that you do so.
Secondary Comment

    Concrit is now welcome, please look on the first post.

    What we are specifically asking for at this moment is what is in conjunction with the current discussion topic. And as such, we ask that the concrit be given in the thread. Please be kind and considerate, but honest. Do not do something that would hurt you, or that you think would hurt the other author. Also please point out the things you like in the post and why.

    Authors, the purpose of this will be to help you become better at this type of humor. If someone is overly harsh I will request that it be adjusted accordingly.
Also, the challenge responses have be priceless. I want everyone to know that they have done a great job with these responses.

    In the future we may have a winner, based on the best response/funniest response/most creative response.

    I think slapstick/physical humor is very hard to write well because that genre is so dependent on visual aspects. Without the visual, it can often come across as silly or juvenile. Sometimes going with the absurd can cross over the line into hilarious, but just putting Qui-Gon in a dress does not make the story funny.

    I mostly rely on situations and dialogue for humor, so I'm looking forward to reading everyone's responses to this challenge.

    I tried some physical humor in the "Guess the Writer" challenge, but was never quite sure how it came off.

    Since concrit is now acceptable, would you prefer to use excerpts posted in the thread (you specified 250-600 words in the concrit policy thread), or would you rather people link to the fic they have questions about? (That was a question I should've asked people, really.) 8-}

    Just for the record, I generally don't find physical humor funny anyhow, but when it works, it seems all to be timing rather than content. There's nothing especially amusing about the idea of hydrospanners falling on Han's head, but it is kind of funny watching him slide around semi-pointlessly inside the Falcon's innards, shouting orders that get him nowhere, then demand that Chewie bring him the hydrospanners--only to have said hydrospanners immediately fall on his head. Having him pop up at once afterward looking mortally offended lessens any seriousness that might have leeched into the scene from concern that he was seriously hurt, and the fact that he is obviously fine makes the big, crabby deal he's making over the situation funnier. (Harrison Ford is great at physical humor, by the way.)

    So it's not necessarily the idea, it's the way it's executed.

    Jade_Pilot you are correct. It is one of the hardest things to write, humor wise (at least in my opinion), because you have to see it in your minds eye. The problem is your readers don't always see things in their mind the same way you do. Hence it can be very difficult to actually get the humor across. Absurdity can help, but there's a fine line to walk when using that. If you make something to absurd it's just boring.

    Situational humor can be easier to write, as can dialogue (if you know the character well). I like about all types of humor, at least in one form or the other. There are some i'm less fond of than others, but I still appreciate it.

    *Chuckles at Qui-gon in a dress...*

    Oquidaun thank you for gracing us with your presence, and I'm very glad you approve miss mod type person.

    Ophelia I'd be more than happy to tell you what I think. I'm by no means an afficionado, but I can comment.

    Timing is indeed the key to it. You have to build up the anticipation of what's going to happen. The example you had is a good example of it. You just knew something had to happen, what with all of the shaking the ship was doing... and you anticipated it until you had to laugh. With writing building that anticipation without revealing what's going to happen is not anywhere near as easy, because you have to describe the surroundings, or what is being used, for it to really fit in. But when you do that it kind of gives things away. That would likely be why there's so little physical humor in writing, because it's so much harder to surprise people.

    Again, your right. If you execute a poor idea well it will be well recieved. However if you have the best idea in the world, and can't execute it then don't anticipate it being well recieved by any means.

    [hl=black]DISCUSSION ADDITION[/hl]

    Here's a question for you then: How do you go about executing physical humor in a manner that will gain a good response?

    Also, how do you create the anticipation that is needed for physical humor to work effectively?

    I think it's also time for a new challenge. I apologize to Ophelia as I had told her we would be using her idea next, but DaenaBenjen42 sent me a rough idea for one, that with her permission I tweaked, that fits far better with the current disscussion. We will hold onto yours Ophelia, as I definitely like it.
