    Minch

Considering that it was the original name for Yoda and a lot of concepts, early artworks and names from early OT drafts already became canon.

That could be, but fingers crossed they never do.
One of the strokes of brilliance from Uncle George was telling authors never to reveal the species name of Yoda. I hope Disney Lucasfilm stays true to that.

Don't know If it's true but i've read somewhere that Filoni or Favreau apparently came up with a name for the species together with George.

I've always thought of Yoda as a minch. What would the plural form be? Minches? Minch? Mensch?

    Came across this article today:

    https://www.ripleys.com/weird-news/yoda-originally-named-buffy/

Never heard this before. Or was i simply repressing the memory?

    WTF

Now i only hope that neither George, Filoni and Favreau ever make Buffy into the species name

I'm sure it's something George would be able to come up with

Considering that 2001 came out a decade before TESB went into production, I have a hard time believing that. Oh, and monkeys aren't apes, and the apes in 2001 are clearly people in costumes (with the exception of the babies, who were chimpanzees). So yeah, it shouldn't have told anyone anything about the difficulty of working with monkey actors.

As for Yoda originally being called Buffy, I can't find a source for that. The only articles I can find that mention it don't give any sources, and all seem to be rewordings of one original article (unclear which).
Looking at Leigh Brackett's first draft of TESB, the name given to Yoda is the more familiar Minch, so as far as I can tell, if the Buffy name was ever considered (doubtful), it never made it into any screenplay. And digging further into it, according to this article, the original name for Yoda in story conferences was "The Critter", while in the treatment he was called Minch Yoda. By the time of the later, post-Brackett drafts, they seem to have settled for Yoda.

Unless anyone can find something that I've missed, I think we can call this one debunked.

I've never liked the idea of naming Yoda's species. But if I had to give them a name, I'd simply call them Jedi. The Jedi Order's name would be derived from this species, much like how there was a Sith species.

Honestly I’ve never understood the point of keeping Yoda’s species a mystery. Especially once Yaddle appeared alongside him on the Jedi Council. It seems like such a random thing to withhold to me.

    I'd have called them Chazzwazzers.

We all need a bit of random mystery in our lives ;)
Personally, I think not knowing any details about their species makes those characters a little more interesting. Or not. Part of me expects it all to be revealed one day; what they're called, where they come from, what their culture is like - and that part of me really wants to know. Another part of me doesn't really care and expects it all to remain a mystery, though.

I mean they may as well keep it a mystery at this point, even if it’s a pointless mystery to keep. It would be even more pointless to just make up an explanation now.

But it does make me wonder if Lucas had even some vague notion of a possible future revelation regarding his species, perhaps having to do with their relationship to the Force or something along those lines.

I concur, but i think just giving the species a name without revealing anything about their origin, culture and relationship to the force doesn't destroy the mystery.

Yoda’s species name is coincidentally a very bad slur on Earth and as such it can’t be repeated out loud
