And I've just made intricate plans for catching, housing and feeding an angler fish. All I need now is an income of several million a year to fund the project.

    Anyone got a spare bathysphere?

How can you catch an angler fish?

You'll need to dive in a sub to the depths of the ocean where theres no light and grab it somehow

Ah, yes, my plan is to construct a container that can withstand huge pressure from within... take it down an ocean trench, with a lure for the angler fish (finding something that works may take some trial & error). Watching from my bathysphere, I will secure the container once an unwitting angler fish has entered.

The container will then be hoisted up, and flown by helicopter to its housing.

Feeding is teh tricky part... and will require a huge pressurisation tank, with a 'door' to the angler fish container that can be opened once the pressure has equalised. Squid can survive in both high & low pressure environments, so on squid my fish shall feast :D

Angler fish are little deep-see beasties with HUGE great mouths (proportional to the rest of them) and a lantern-looking thing sprouting out of its head to act a lure for smaller, unwary fish.

They're really ugly, and there's a stuffed or otherwise preserved one in the Natural History Museum in London.

SB - you've read Mann's Doctor Faustus? I was reading the deep-sea exploration bit last night... got me thinking about deep-sea fish.

I'd love to see a sperm whale hunt giant squid :D

ohhh and therefore that explains why you would need a lot of money!!

deep-sea exploration...something I have never done! good luck with that venture, ATY. ;)

You'll have to make the tank realy dark, and feed it big fish.
