Vandalian Soldier by Brett-Neufeld
East of the Eagle Sea, the great continent once held many kingdoms and realms. But all have been swallowed by the rising of two great empires that now battle each other endlessly for supremacy; The Bracko Empire, and their rival, the Holy Vandalian Empire.
Officially, Vandalia is an ally of the Kingdom of Sword Court in the west. On the surface, they share the same origins, similar culture, and practice the same religion. But any who have lived in Vandalia can tell that something is deeply wrong with the land.
Vandalian lords and knights espouse chivalry and virtue, but their sense of honor is tainted with cruelty, and sometimes even sadism. The faithful pray enthusiastically, but their strange rites cause a suspicious eye to question who exactly it is they pray to. Odd idols and iconography are littered throughout the land, and an eerie gloom hangs in the air at night; as if to hide unsavory things that wish to remain hidden in darkness.
The Vandalian Military is numerous, highly structured, drilled, and well-equipped. Though each soldier is trained with a specialization, every single one is a skilled swordsman. But their true strength lies in their strange faith. Every army is accompanied by groups of clerics, mystics, and fanatical flagellants. Behind tents and in shadows, they perform their mysterious rituals in hopes of calling down powers from Beyond. Powers that seem none too shy to answer.
Were it not for constant war with their main rival, Bracko (who are an equally deadly military power) Vandalia could very well become unstoppable."
Vandalian Knight by Brett-Neufeld
Just like their neighbors across the sea in Sword Court, the Empire of Vandalia runs on a complex feudal system of nobles, knights, peasants and chivalry.
Vandalia, being a cursed land as it is, has taken on a disturbing form of this way of life. As a powerful military empire, war is constant across its massive borders. Amidst the countless ranks of soldiers, an elite class of knights serves as both the point-of-the-spear in battle, and the iron fist of the law in the imperial cities. These heavily armored ranks of lesser nobles are as feared by their own people as they are by their enemies.
The culture of the Vandalian knight class is becoming increasingly brutal. As soldiers-for-life in an endless war, they are taught to kill without mercy, and punish crime without pity. But as members of the Vandalian nobility, they join in the ever-increasingly depraved pleasures and luxury of the nobles. Further still, they have fully embraced Vandalia's strange and occult-like Church of the Divine; an "alternative" to Church of the Highfather.
This mix of power, wealth, luxury, ruthlessness, and occultism has created the modern Vandalian knight; a warrior and law enforcer who the common and poor of the land live in terror of."

Captain Seta by jollyjack
"(My entry for the Cosmic Corsair Original Character Competition)
There is a saying, along the space lanes that run from the prosperous ore belts of Cartagena Nova and the Colonised Systems: “Beware the Hellstrom. Beware Captain Seta”.
The Hellstrom asteroid was once a refinery, protected by a garrison from Cadiz Minor. When an alien fungus found its way on board, and began hideously mutating any crewman that breathed its spores, the authorities of Andalusian space quarantined the Hellstrom and abandoned the poor souls aboard to die.
Only… They didn’t oblige.
As the outbreak took hold, some perished, but many had equipped themselves with breathing apparatus. Sealed in their suits, they were protected from the fungus and remained unaffected. Despite this, they were still not permitted to leave. The crew of the Hellstrom were gunned down by Andalusian patrol ships as soon as they tried to escape.
Furious at this betrayal, the Hellstrom garrison, led by their captain, Seta, worked with the refinery crew to mobilise the asteroid. Heavy thrusters were constructed and the rock blasted its way through the quarantine, out into deep space.
The Hellstrom was thought to be gone forever, but three years later, it appeared in orbit over Eos Pegasus and rained space debris on the mining colonies there. Space debris loaded with the alien fungus.
As the miners succumbed to monstrous mutation, and chaos tore Eos Pegasus apart, the crew of the Hellstrom swept in and stripped the settlements clean, taking all the riches and resources they could carry.
Captain Seta’s reign of terror had begun….
The alien fungus that infected the Hellstrom was lethal to most. The “lucky” ones, such as Seta, were twisted into deformed aberrations. Seta, now wracked with this fungus, is a walking bio-weapon. His head, upper chest and entire right arm are spore factories, jetting out death and mutation. The mere threat of Seta making planetfall is usually enough for a settlement to simply send what he demands directly to the Hellstrom, without question.
Seta wears a type of morion helmet, decorated with blood red plumage from a Prospero hawk.
(Seta’s whole design is based on garb and armour worn by Spanish Conquistadors)
As part of his revenge, Seta’s chosen symbol is a metal cast of his former visage, which he carries with him into battle. He wants to be sure that ALL know the true face of the man bringing terror to Andalusian space. "
