ArtStation - Hercules - Characters, WETA WORKSHOP DESIGN STUDIO
"Weta Workshop's design studio produced hero character and prop design for the reimagining of the classic tale of Hercules (2015). One of the studio's main challenges was to explore both the myth and reality of the filmmakers approach to the story. This meant designs needed to feel culturally grounded, but at the same time allow for the idea of the legend. For example, a giant tortured human that once had two eyes now only has one and this gives rise to the myth of the cyclops."

ArtStation - Ghost in the Shell - Kuze 01, Jeremy Hanna
"Kuze was one of the first things Rupert asked us to look at at Weta. I worked on the character for a good 9 months in pre-production, with lots of changes and redesigns as Michael Pitt came on board and we got closer to the shoot. Turns out he was redesigned again in editing - regardless, he was fun to work on!"

"This one was playing with the idea that Kuze's epidermal layer of synthetic skin has lost its bond with the body and peels away to reveal the translucent gel-like casing of his musculoskeletal system."

ArtStation - Ghost in the Shell - Kuze 02, Jeremy Hanna
This was a mood piece / costume design for Kuze. Kurt and Bart, the film's costume designers, had some cool ideas around combining translucent plastic and fur to accentuate Kuze's discordant style; he's broken but somehow artfully beautiful. I always liked the idea of how these materials could play in silhouette in Kuze's early, mysterious appearances. Backlit, there would be sharp pockets of vibrant red as the light is transmitted through the plastic, contrasting with the fur's soft, raggedy edge.
We were also thinking that Kuze would swap out panels of synthetic skin, and maybe even entire limbs as his body continues to lose its cohesion and break down. In this image, Kuze has swapped out his hand for a low-tech ball-jointed version of female proportions, with scavenged skin panels from discarded bots.

ArtStation - Ghost in the Shell - Kuze 03, Jeremy Hanna
his was the approved look for Kuze for several months. Michael Pitt's subsequent casting led to a number of redesigns as he became more involved with the character. The idea here was that his synthetic body is failing him, each component slowly losing cohesion with the whole due to his unsuccessful shelling procedure. The only original 'skin' he managed to keep is on his upper face, while the rest of his body is either patchworked from the skin of scavenged droids, stripped away to reveal the pale 'smart dermis', or dismantled further exposing the musculoskeletal system he shares with the Major. White 'circuitry' fluid would leak from the splitting panels - mimicking tears or unhealed wounds.
As his human likeness falls away, he would preserve and express his humanity through other means; painting, poetry, music... That contrast was always something we tried to come back to. He's broken, ugly, and decrepit; yet somehow also vibrantly beautiful.

ArtStation - Ghost in the Shell - Kuze 04, Jeremy Hanna
As Kuze's body falls apart, he maintains himself by continually replacing components when they lose their bond with his body. I thought of this in terms of the way transplanted organs are sometimes rejected by the recipient's immune system; in Kuze's case, he gradually loses control over his body as his transplanted brain rejects the synthetic shell he's been placed in. This recycling and scavenging of synthetic skin panels and body parts presented some existential questions around how gender and race might play into someone's construction of identity and self, which to us delved into some of the core themes of the original material.

ArtStation - Ghost in the Shell - 'Samurai Arms', Jeremy Hanna
'Samurai Arms' was originally going to fight Batou during the bar shoot-out, but he ended up on the cutting room floor. This was a continuation of some ideas my friends Adam Middleton and Greg Tozer had been looking at. Adam had done a bunch of cool prosthetic designs for the face, and Greg had come up with this wicked idea where some gang members would adorn themselves with pearlescent, armour-like tattoos.

ArtStation - Ghost in the Shell - HANKA Security, Jeremy Hanna
This was my first pass on the HANKA Security droids, the intention remained fairly unchanged through to the finished movie. I thought it would be interesting if they looked human from a distance, but closer inspection revealed these rigid, plasticky faces. Their blank, pupilless eyes with would make eye contact impossible and the subject of their gaze indefinite, and an electronic voice box would project commands through unmoving lips.
