    GALAXIUM: Thuvians by Blazbaros
    [IMG]

"Written by Riaden234, edited by Blazbaros

Summary: Thuvians are an alien species of talented miners, salvagers and engineers, discovered two hundred years after the Forever War, despite being located well within InterCon space. Their entry onto the galactic stage has been largely attributed to an InterCon Captain Malcolm Jones intervening on their behalf to help them avoid the devastating effects of a civil war that had plagued them. While they have been admitted into the Interstellar Confederation as a special case, many still continue about to debate on weather or not they should have been introduced to the galaxy before discovering FTL travel.

Physical Appearance and Biology: A race of semi-amphibian humanoids that stand about four to five feet in height, Thuvians tend to be rather bulky and muscled, along with having a denser skeletal structure due to the higher gravity of their homeworld. Each of them have three digit hands and legs that curve back slightly from their knees, which connect to their flat feet that each have four flexible toes (two splayed out in the front, and two in back) that allow them to have a better grip over the terrain they walk on. Their ears are located on the sides of their heads which have membranes that allow them to block out extremely loud noises and close them off from dust. Similarly, their noses have a natural filtration system that allows them to avoid breathing in harmful airborne particles.

Biologically, Thuvians have two sexes, male and female, with males tending to have to be taller and much more broader. They have notable bone plates that protrude directly from their foreheads, with males having bone plates that are more edged and that cover more of their faces, while females have bone plates that are smaller and more rounded. In addition, Thuvians have stubby tails that protrude just above their buttocks, serving as fat storage, which can differ in girth and length. Males typically tending to have bigger tails than those of their female counterparts.

Unlike normal types of amphibians who have water-permeable skin, Thuvian skin is dry and extreme moisture resistant, allowing for them to retain water for long periods of time, as well offering them heat resistance. Typically their skin comes in single or multiple earth tone shades, with various natural markings and patterns. Also unlike amphibians, Thuvians have hair atop their heads, that in contrast to their skin tones comes in much more cooler colors, in contrast to human hair, than hair trends being very durable and bristly.

Breeding among Thuvians involves males inseminating females, with a six month gestation period the females then lay a clutch of three to four eggs into pools of freshwater. These eggs will incubate for several days, swelling in size and being taken care of by their parents before eventually hatching into Thuvian infants, who then are collected and nursed. This nursing period lasts for several months where the infant's cranium develops more.

Thuvians typically reach physical maturity around ten years of age, with their natural lifespan lasting up sixty to seventy years of age.

History: Believed to have evolved from a species of semi-subterranean amphibians, prehistortic Thuvians would originally live near underground lakes and rivers. Eventually their species choose to migrate completely above ground and would in relatively short amount of time manage to build a flourishing civilization that spanned across much of their homeworld.

However their civilization would become threatened when the magnetic field of their planet began to fluctuate dangerously, allowing for extreme amounts of radiation to bombard the surface, killing nearly all organic life and making it virtually uninhabitable. As a result this event would force the Thuvians to move underground deeper than they had ever been just to survive, with many Thuvians perishing in great numbers during this sudden drastic transition.

This continued for many thousands of years, forcing the Thuvian people to re-adapt to subterranean life. They developed advanced engineering, salvaging and mining skills to allow them to build and maintain underground cities connected to each other via a complex tunnel network. They would constantly be forced to deal with food shortages, disease, natural disasters, internal fighting, and deadly creatures that frequently made Thuvian society teeter at the edge of destruction.

In an attempt to to avoid descending into anarchy, the Thuvians would instate their military to take control temporarily as the governing body, allowing them to impose martial law to return a sense of order to their soceity. This stabilized the Thuvian people, but when the time came to relinquish their power, they refused. This resulted in hundreds of years of dictatorial rule, sparking dissidents who were put down time and time again. Word of radio signals from space, indicating alien life, spread like wildfire among the citizens who cried out for expeditions to the surface to make contact with these signals. They were refused, such reports censored and dismissed as fantasy. This only caused more chaffing between the government and the people and it became a focal point of any and all debates: if there was indeed life beyond their planet's scorched surface, there could be a chance that they could save them from their inevitable doom.

This continued for some time, rebels becoming more focused on breaking out to the surface rather then challenging the military police. With an incredible amount of luck, a small group found their way into the hellish landscape of their ancestors, finally analyzing the mysterious signals. Desperately they attempted to alert whoever was up there, but in doing so made the military police aware of their presence. It was about this time that Captain Jones and the crew of the ICF Encounter were investigating the magnetic storm overhead, discovering the strange burst of data. An expedition was launched, weathering the storm, becoming embroiled in the battle between the rebels and the military. Thanks to the InterCon universal translator, still in its experimental stage, Jones and his crew were able to distinguish friend from foe, unfortunately becoming a target for the dictator's agents. Their timely arrival was the push the rebels needed to finally rise up and take control.

The decision made by Captain Jones to save them has been highly controversial, as he broke protocol not only regarding interaction with a pre-FTL species, but more importantly becoming integral to overthrowing an established government. Despite this, the Thuvians were inducted into InterCon, given the support they would need to survive. As a result, they gained FTL technology that allowed them to become a part of galactic society.

Culture and Society: As an industrious alien race, much of the culture of the Thuvians has been shaped from trying to survive their underground environment under various harsh conditions. As result of this, Thuvians as a whole have gone onto adopting into having more practical mindsets, over talking or debating about theoretics. Furthermore the constant threats that they have been forced to overcome, have also led to Thuvians into becoming rather down to earth and having rather extremely tenacious attitude, not letting anything kind of challenge no matter how hard from achieving their goals.

As a society Thuvians are extremely utilitarian and collectivist, reflecting in their policies, buildings and technology, all Thuvians tend to work together to use what they are best at to help contribute in what needs to be to done. Outside of simply working however, Thuvians tend to enjoy all forms of storytelling, with books, movies and plays often being favorite Thuvian activities in their leisure. With their introduction to the rest of the Galaxy this has allowed for a greater abundance of resources, allowing them focus on other interests other than survival, as well as the slow emergence of wealthy Thuvian merchants and contractors.

Homeworld: Referred to as Thuvak, the home planet of the Thuvians is approximately twice the size of earth, and has a slightly higher gravity as a result. At one point the planet is believed to have been rather temperate covered with forests and canyons, with several large oceans. However since the magnetic field having become unstable the planet remains little more than a irradiated wasteland frequently plagued by highly volatile radioactive storms that make visiting or even scanning the planetary surface extremely difficult. However underneath the surface lie the vast Thuvian tunnel network and subterranean caverns that make up the primary sport where Thuvians dwell alongside other subterranean creatures that had migrated bellow and evolved to adapt. Many of these tunnels extend for miles on end connected by trains or underground rivers, but however some of the tunnels have been lost due to earthquakes, insane marauders and dangerous wildlife.

The official capital of Thuvak is the underground city of Zarton, one of the larger cities among connected by the Thuvian tunnel system, it was originally a top secret military base built beneath the ruins of original surface capital, and housed the various Thuvian government leaders when they fled beneath the earth. In the time since then the city has grown immensely and now effectively has one of the only viable spaceports for ships to travel to and off world. In addition the city it connected to all the other underground Thuvian cities via its train system.

Government: The Republic of Thuvak, is the current government of Thuvians has only been in power for fifty years, having been formed after the defeat of the Thuvian High Command. It is democratic institution, composed primarily of a parliament of elected officials, with a head of state that is both elected by parliament rather than by the citizens.

Military: In terms of their military the military of the Thuvian Republic is much smaller than most of the members of InterCon, with having a rather small navy, with most military forced consisting of their ground infantry who operating equally parts both soldiers and police for each of their underground cities.

Galactic Relations: Outside of being viewed simply as a relatively new alien race, Thuvians tend to be viewed with general friendliness and respect by other races, in part in many of them being hired to help work on various space and mining stations, for their skills and hard working dimenor. However there are still many who dislike the gradual migration of thuvians across the galaxy, along with many who question on whether or no they as a species should have been rescued despite InterCon law prohibiting interacting with pre-FTL species, resulting in some minor friction between them and certain parties.

Names: Thuvians names tend to be short and sound rough, with little difference between female and male names. Typically it is normal for thuvians usually have a single given name, followed by their family name, and finally the city of their birth. Only when Thuvians wish to be formal or are meeting for the first time will they use their full names, but otherwise simply use their first names on all other occasions."
