She stared at them and closed her eyes, shaking her head. "So there is nothing I can do you say? That is unacceptable."

Amy began to realize for Adrian and Xi this was not personal. Simulations ended obviously all the time.

"They are alive, they exist. They risked everything to save their way of existence. They are brave and they are strong and all we do is watch them fight and fail and ... vanish?"

Christian knew he had no second to act and hesitated not a split-second. Leaping forward he grabbed Sidney's ankle and pushed the gun aside. The shot missed him by millimeters. He felt it's heat. It ended in the server behind them, that burst into flames.

Sidney was blinded by the explosion a second. That was enough for Christian to hammer his hand into his face. Pain flashed through his muscles and bones from the impact. Sidney stumbled and Christian grabbed him and turned by using the velocity to hurl him into the burning server. Sidney screamed out as his hoodie protected him from the worst. Christian knew if he lost momentum the man would attack, so he beat another time in his face and a third. His hand felt as if it was breaking. Sidney took both hits and as the pain paused Christian he looked unimpressed at him. The pain seemed to make him only angrier. He grabbed Christian's head letting go of his gun and hammered Christian's skull into the next server. Christian's head was spinning and ached ... confusion ... he tried to fight it down, but adrenaline had it's limits too.

Sidney kicked his knee and Christian collapsed. Sidney immediately kicked into his stomach with full force. Christian gasped and collapsed.

Standing over him Sidney was breathing heavy and calmly put his hand into his pocket. To his surprise the gun had not returned there.

"Looking for this?" Christian asked and he had grabbed the gun on the ground. With what strength he had left he swang the gun with the grip first into Sidney's knee. The man collapsed screaming to the ground. Christian gave him a second hit at his head, turned and tried to crawl away as fast as possible ... getting as much distance between him and the man as possible.

IC: Nicole Gravely, world slowly vanishing

Well, this put things in perspective. Gravely had thought things were bad when Captain Windslow had revealed how inter-departmental cooperation worked behind her back, however, it looked like Fate had couldn't one-up the Captain, and hold its pint at the same time, and had gone, Hold my beer.

The girl smiled, either because of Nicole's agreement, or because she saw an opportunity to , having been 'carded' at the bar, drink Fate's beer whilst he, she, or it, was showing off.

"I won't let them use my Sidney."

Nicole's misgivings upon hearing the kid refer to the main suspect as 'hers', was forgotten as she handed over something that looked like a keycard.

The detective pinched it between thumb and forefinger, and looked at it quizzically. "American Express? Don't leave home without it?"

"There is a girl called Annie who needs our help. She needs this, more than anything."

"What're you, the patron saint of retail sales?" Gravely called over as she hopped onto another fragmented bit of pavement that was less dissolved than her last one.
Frankly, all this sounded like it was happening far too late. With almost nothing visible of the world around her, she couldn't see how she could even get to this Annie, and that was even assuming that the part of the world where she was, was any better than this was, let alone still had a cashier to ring this up!

Swaying on her current tile, Nikki could see that the schoolgirl had already started dissolving from the back; she quite literally wouldn't have been able to find her arse with both hands, due to the simple fact that it wasn't there anymore.

With a smile what remained of the world vanished.

Nicole was braced for a fall into the bottomless-looking void, but there was no sense of gravity pulling her down, which was curious.

Finally even the girl dissolved. With her torso and left arm remaining she handed her a blank white keycard, so now she had two. "Good luck!"

Nicole was now completely enveloped in a darkness that would have been absolute but for those colourful geometric shapes scattered about the place.

Is-is this what she meant by exist? She thought, bringing her knees up into her chest to curl into a feotal position in an unconscious move for safety and comfort.

That was then that she noticed that she too was starting to disappear.

    There was no pain.

She silently watched as the darkness beyond, started to show through her limbs...

ooc: Ladies, Gentlemen, the Endgame has begun! Sorry for pushing some of you forward.

    2019

    UCLA, Westwood

    Lobby Ground floor

Cardigan opened fire the moment the doors opened and the SWAT swarmed in, their first three members gunned down right away before the rest returned fire and forced Cardigan to take cover. He gave Mary a look and opened his mouth to shout something, but before a word came out he spasmed as two bullets hit his chest, piercing his body armor. On the other side Charles had come down the stairs and had fired before taking cover again. They were now in a crossfire between the door and the stairs, with Cardigan sliding down the pillar he had used for cover.

    Corridor

Annie was leaning against the door in all her despair and anger as Nicole ... well she appeared. One second she felt her body disintegrate in a strange unnatural and painless way and then she was here.

In front of her stood pink haired Annie. The only victim to ever survive an encounter with Sidney. There was also a locked door, with an opening mechanism made for the card the strange Asian girl had handed her.

    Shots were heard everywhere.

    Cellar

Sidney gasped, feeling the pain but not injured. As Christian crawled away he leaped on top of him. He could have tried to wrestle the gun from him, but Sidney did not wanted to use the gun. All day people were beating him up, ruining his plans. With an inhuman strength he hammered the fist into Christian's back and heard two rips break with a satisfying crack. Then he took Christian's head and turned it back to break his neck. He wanted to feel it break ...

    61%

"Mr. Borg it will now be over very soon." Sidney hissed. But Christian felt a strength he had not expected from his untrained body. He would not hold on for long, but the will to survive was there ...

A spasm went through Andy as she kicked his wound and Elina would see he was fading away ... he had no strength left to fight the belt being put around his neck, but as it was closed around his throat reared up. It was not enough to throw Elina off and weakly his hands tried to grab the belt, clawing their way between it and his neck without success.

IC: Agent Mary Formal (UNCLE Section III: Enforcement and Intelligence), Detective Sergeant Nicole Gravely (Portland Police Bureau), lobby of the UCLA Main Auditorium Building

Mary was just realising that she was a little bit exposed, just as an indecisive-looking Cardigan stared at Annie and then at the door and finally at Mary.

She knelt by one of the slain cops and tore apart the bulletproof vest's velcro straps at his sides, peeling it off him, laying it on the floor as she one-handedly pulled her own over her head.

Joe looked at her like she was crazy while she once again swapped the UNCLE and LAPD strips between the vests.

"Judge me all you want," She invited as she pulled the larger vest over her head, and strapped it around her as best she could. "Would I be going through this rigmarole if UNCLE weren't real?"

Designed for a male's larger frame, it was almost like wearing a sandwich board. 'The End of the World is Nigh!' Which would be pretty apt, given the current situation.

"Go." Joe gave his own assent to the pink-haired girl, and proceeded to load his assault rifle through.

She glanced back to see Annie flash them a smile, then grab her bin bag as instructed, then head off.

"I take the first who come to the door and you take over when I need to reload." He said to Mary and took cover behind a pillar, aiming at the door.

"Roger." Disdaining the open lobby as she would be vulnerable to the SWAT guy who had let her go upstairs, should he change his mind.

Instead, she took up position on the far side of the steps that Charles, or Lip-smacking, or whatever he was calling himself, would come down if he came out this way.

There was a gap between the steps and the transparent safety barrier of hardened plastic that stopped people falling off the sides, that she could fit her fists and forearms through, and shoot through. The barrier had a twin on the far side of the staircase, so SWAT fire would have to come through both to reach her.... she hoped.

From down the short hallway to parts unknown, she heard an impact sound on thick metal, followed by their cohort complaining, "Damned! Damneddamneddamned!"

Formal turned her head to the sound, and opened her mouth to ask what was wrong, when the shooting suddenly started, Cardigan's AR-15 chattering loudly to puncture and frost panes of the entrance glass as the SWAT tried to swarm inside!

Three of them fell in Joe's initial onslaught, which faltered almost instantly, with the Vice detective seeking cover behind the pillar as dozens of shots gouged into it from myriad weapons.

    BANG!

Charles firing from the stairs that she was using for cover, startled her, and he had ducked back round the landing and foot of the next set of steps before she could hope to draw a bead on him. Unfortunately, though she could see him, she could not shoot him.
The same plastic barriers that she hoped would protect her from the SWAT if they had remained outside, were between her and him.

She had no choice but to turn her back on him and blast the SWAT that were still trying to pour into the lobby, her Bren Ten jumping in her fists with each shot as she tried to stop them from overwhelming Joe's position.

She fired three shots into them, then swung her gun back to Charles to keep him honest, ready to turn back to the cops if he hadn't yet moved...

    Black Void

Nicole was glad that she had managed to keep her eyes open as she hugged her knees, for she was able to notice that things were getting brighter first hand, rather than having to see the insides of her eyelids glowing pink, first.

She did her best to unfold and get her feet down once gravity returned, only succeeding to sprawl backwards on her right hip and hands, looking up to find someone quite familiar, standing above her - pink haired Annie. The only victim to ever survive an encounter with Sidney - There was also a locked door, with an opening mechanism made for the card the strange Asian girl had handed her.

Oh, thank God! She thought with palpable relief at being back in the world again!

Sound was the next sense to return, the cacophany of gunshots being heard everywhere.

Nicole sat up and pulled her hands into view to sort through the cards, then holding the blank white keycard up to the other woman.

    "Annie? Try this one first."

Christian felt the neck being stretched back and he felt fear and adrenaline hammering into his mind. Every muscle tightened and every nerve vibrated. He realized he was about to die.

His one hand grabbed instinctively Sidney's iron grip and the other squeezed the gun so hard it almost hurt.

Did he have one more shot? He wondered knowing only the gun could save him. The old cold metal gun was all the advantage he had. He could not risk running out of ammo though. He held it right, out both hands to the ground and pushed up to loosen the pressure on his neck. Then he raised the gun and hammered it with all his might into the foot of the man.

Sidney yelled in pain and his grip loosened enough for a second for Christian to push free. Gasping for air he turned aimed and pulled the trigger.

    Click.

Dammit. He knew he had less than seconds to react and kicked out at the man's leg. Sidney was incredibly strong and invulnerable but he felt pain and was not a trained fighter. Christian just had to win as much time as possible.

Her jaw dropped as a woman appearing from nowhere in the empty corridor handed her a key card.

"Thanks." She mumbled in disbelief. She was loosing seconds. Seconds that counted if Christian was alive still.

She took the card and swiped it through the door lock. It went to green and Annie pushed open the door. She gave the woman a last look. A cop obviously. She had a gun.

"If you wanna save the world I could use someone to distract a serial killer." Annie began to descend, simply hoping her scratchy offer would be enough to make a policewoman follow her.

She put a foot to his chest and pushed back, pulling the belt around her hands and using her weight and strength of her long leg to pull the belt as tight as possible. This was not a clean shot. It was a disgusting way to kill him, but if anyone deserved this it was him.

"Not exactly drowning, but you know the feeling so you." Elina hissed at him and pulled as hard as she could.

Adrian gave her a weak smile.

"There is one thing I learned a long time ago about the simulations. They are realistic, they have rules. Fairness is none of them Amy."

Amy nodded as she understood she was no longer part of the conflict she had left. Annie and Christian were on their own.

"So what am I supposed to do? Spend an eternity in this place enjoying the TV program of other people suffering?"

Xi smiled. "They are not suffering. They are alive. Not in the way you think, but alive. Learn from them. They live, they love, they cry and fail, laugh and succeed. There are endless worlds. Futures. Past. Historical simulations. Fantasies of such detail you would never have considered them possible." Xi stepped closer. "There is pleasure. There is purpose. Worlds without an end. You have known only one. Now that you are one of us you can eventually visit them. Stay with them for a few years, like Adrian here did. Maybe you can even change some for the better. Shoguns, Nazis, Gods and Angels, New York, Paris, Hong Kong, dystopian futures and utopias. You can visit them all. They are yours. Without the risk of ever dying or becoming bored you are now a Traveller between worlds. Just those two worlds you can probably never visit again. They might perish tonight."

Amy looked at the woman. Annie was so different to her. So compassionate and caring.

"The least I own them is watch then." Amy said and turned.

Adrian and Xi exchanged looks. "Sure this was not a mistake?" Xi asked. Adrian smiled. "Nope. That makes her so exciting."

Xi laughed. "Have you fallen in love with her, Adrian?"

Adrian smirked and looked at Xi. "Whatever love is." He said and followed Amy back to her room.

Cardigan was a fighter. He knew he was probably done. Ambulances were outside and the outside seemed to have fallen. So he made his last available move. He crawled into cover and fired blindly his last burst to force the SWAT to take cover.

Charles was going to end the job and dived out of cover right into Mary's line of fire. From behind bursts from assault rifles hit her cover. It cracked and the impact spit little pieces around her. SWAT was pushing to capture the lobby. That was their prime priority. Not survival, but speed.

    Cellar

Sidney was thrown to the ground, still gasping in pain. He would not be stopped by pain though. With one decisive leap he landed on Christian, grabbing the handgun.

    66%

"Die!" He yelled at Borg trying to grab the gun and freeing it by putting his head back and let it snap forward in a powerful head butt. It made the skull of Christian almost crack and the moment of dizziness was all Sidney needed to wrestle the gun from him. Sidney rolled of Christian and opened the gun, ejecting the empty shells before getting a single bullet from his jacket and trying to pull it in.

    67%.

Somewhere were steps. Someone was coming.

Annie and Nicole arrived in the cellar and saw the table with the two laptops and the dead body of Andy Chang. Around this scenery were endless lines of tall server towers. Somewhere between them they heard the gasping and yelling of the fight.

Then the yell "Die!" rang through the underground hall and they heard it was straight ahead a little to their left.

IC: Nicole Gravely...somewhere with a door

"Thanks." The woman standing over her, mumbled in disbelief, accepting the proffered keycard and tryng it on the door lock, which obligingly went green. She pushed the door open.

With her own situation stabilising, Gravely noticed what her backwards travel had done with her kilt, grabbed a fistful of cloth and shoved it down enough to make herself decent, just as this woman who was either really called Annie, or rolling with it to get her hands on that keycard, aborted her entry and glanced back to her.

The sergeant recognised that Annie's eyes had flicked to her thigh holster and the Bren.

That could be the title of a TV show - 'Thigh Holster and the Bren'. Tonight on the CW. 8pm Eastern.

"If you wanna save the world I could use someone to distract a serial killer." Annie pushed through the door and disappeared.

The sergeant gathered her legs under her, and got enough forward momentum to rise and reach the door, pushing through to find that Annie wasn't actually in a broom cupboard and had been exaggerating about saving the world.

No, she was clattering down some brightly-lit, white-washed steps to somewhere.

Drawing her gun and sliding her free hand down the railing on her left so she could move fast enough to not lose sight of Annie, she urgently whispered, "Where are we?"

She obviously did not know that this was UCLA, or given the complete destruction of her former location, that she was even in the same world!

There was light, air, gravity. Baby steps.

The steps led down to a windowless floor.

Okay, wherever this was, tables and laptops looked the same as she was used to. Even the brand logos on the laptops were familiar.

Then she smelled it, and automatically drew in a long inhalation through her nose.
"I smell blood. A lot of it. And cordite."

Then they found a head-shot dead body of....Nicole regarded what was left, and had no clue who it was. Male. Very likely, human.

She looked around the veritable forest of black server towers that blocked vision in several directions. Somewhere between them they heard the gasping and yelling of the fight.

Then the yell "Die!" rang through the windowless hall and they heard it was straight ahead a little to their left.

"LAPD!" She called down the nearest aisle, hoping the letters meant something to whomever was listening. "Drop your weapons, and come out with your hands up!"

Nicole grasped her gun with both hands, and held the large chrome pistol before her face, quietly sidling to an aisle two along from the one that sounded like it led to the wrestlers.

Mary had turned to cover Charles just in time, for his head and gun hand appeared over the top of the safety barrier, maybe two feet above her, to get a clean shot at her.

Despite the mercy that he had shown her upstairs, the self-declared UNCLE agent shot him in the face.

She turned her face aside, squeezing her eyes shut in the expectation that this was not going to be a Kodak Moment, then, quickly divining the significance to sharp particulates hitting her in the face, hurriedly dropped into a tight squat!

Looking up, she could see bits of the safety barrier spinning asunder and raining down on her as well as the tiny geysers of grey cement dust from the wall behind her as the SWAT fire that had shattered her barriers, passed through the spot she had been standing, and raked it.

Thank ****, these ass-hats were sticking to full auto, as she knew from both her lessons at The Farm, and the Miami Vice novel that mentioned it, semi-automatic weapons on full auto, tend to ride up, which probably explained why Cardigan hadn't been cut in half.

Mary didn't know what Joe had done with Sandy's dog, but until she improved her living conditions immensely, she was probably never getting her Benji back.

Formal dove onto her right side with her gun in a double-handed grip, and just blasted away at all the SWAT that she could see from carpet-level, including any that showed interest in Joe's crawl to cover.

Her whole body felt tense. The scream that someone should die indicated that someone was still alive. Which gave her a little hope despite all her wasted time her efforts had not been in vain. She left the shouting to the policewoman, who was probably gonna die of she tried to stop Sidney with a gun. Annie could do little about it without giving her presence away. The element of surprise was all she had now.

She began to close in on the combatants and did not use the direct way but the line of servers in the lane next to it. Getting her plastic bag ready she tried to make out any details of the fight.

Christian felt the impact and his world turned to stars and black for a second. He had never felt physical pain like this. Holding his face he felt Sidney was gone He was no longer on him. Forcing himself to his feet with a blurred vision he saw the man reloaded his gun sitting on the ground. Christian acted instinctively based on strategies he had come up with moments ago still swirling through his head. He grabbed a server and used all his wait and strength left to pull it over so it would come down on Sidney. At least it would slow him down.

    70%

He wanted to run away, but the best he could do was stumble between the servers holding on to them. Somewhere he heard a voice. It was not any. It was a police woman yelling.

"It is Sidney!" Christian yelled out and hoped the olive had found out how ineffective their guns were by now.

As she stepped silently along, ready to react to the first sign of movement, she realised that she couldn't hear any fighting.

    KER-RASH!

The loud noise was almost deafening against the silence, then-

    "It is Sidney!"

"We are coming. Can you get to the door?" She called back, quickening her pace along the aisle towards the sounds of creaking metal and sparks.

She slowed as she reached the far end, and stopped, wanting to get some angle to check to the left and right of her before revealing herself to anyone nearby.

The server crashed on the legs of Sidney and he screamed out in pain. Raising like doing a sit up he tried to aim at Christian this one shot he had in the gun. Auto-aiming did not work with this one. He knew that much. The stumbling enemy vanished behind another server just as he about to shoot. Angry he grabbed the server and threw it of as if it was made of paper. It crushed into a line of identical machines and they began to tumble to the ground.

He heard the voice of a police woman and opened up his gun again shoving another two bullets in quickly and remained on his knees, waiting for a target. He needed to act quickly or Christian would be gone. He fought down his anger, raised his gun and body in one move and began to slowly walk forward, hoping to get a clear shot on the arrival so he could turn back to Christian.

"You are not on my list. You can still leave." He yelled. There was now only one name on the list. One last name.

    Lobby Ground floor

Charles went down as the bullet hit his face and collapsed rolling down the stairs. The SWAT guys actually were smarter than him, spreading to both sides as they made it through the door. One with an MP5 rolled to the ground and kept on firing bursts at her direction while the others kept their guns on auto-fire.

Miami Vice was probably not the best reference for firefights she learned the hard way. The G36 was a rifle made for auto-fire. The room was basically swarmed with bullets and it was not even an aimed shot that hit her side. It was a random bullet ripping her of her feet and to the ground. She was bleeding and it hurt. Also this should not have happened she was bleeding just as everyone else would have when hit by a bullet.

One SWAT stormed forward and was killed by Cardigan with a handgun he had grabbed from a dead cop next to him. He emptied the magazine into him and then had no more strength to keep the gun up or reload. He was terribly pale. The blood loss was bad.

Another SWAT parted from the group and made a run to the corridor as his comrades gave him the most aggressive cover imaginable. She had killed at least five or six of them by now, but they seemed not to get any less as always when she killed one a new SWAT swarmed through the door. It was an infinite stream of black dressed troopers hellbent on getting the obstacle out of the way.

    Mary was this obstacle.

The laptop opened the menu function and a green panel explained that face recognition had failed. She was asked to try again. There was also a panel for a password or fingerprint recognition.

She was running out of time.

The countdown made that terribly obvious.

    Annie
    UCLA Cellar

In the shadow she waited for Sidney to reveal himself. Then she saw Christian stumbling between the servers like a drunk. Sidney had to be somewhere in the direction he was fleeing from. Ducking from one server to the other she made her way downwards the dark alley of humming computers and then she saw him. Hurling a server away like paper and reloading the dreaded revolver he used so constantly.

Annie knelt and waited. She needed to be sure. Only one chance to get him, she thought and waited for the perfect moment to strike.

EDIT: Had to rewrite because update came up.

    Christian Borg
    Cellar

Christian coughed. The door? Did she mean the door on the other side of the cellar? He would never gonna make it if he ran. The rumbling of Sidney throwing the server aside confirmed his assessment of the situation.

"No." He yelled and took cover.

Christian trembled from exhaustion, but did not allow his body to collapse. Sidney reloaded in the dark between the servers. He heard the clicking of bullets entering chambers of the gun. Then there were steps. He cowered in the shadow of his server and waited for Sidney to pass.

He knew he could not defeat Sidney, he knew he should run and hide and leave this simulated police woman to buy him time. They were all just simulations though. So what sense did it make to save the world, if you let everyone die?

The truth was, he was angry. Jack Burns was killing people. People who had lived and feelings. If they were flesh and bone was irrelevant, they were people.

Clenching his fists he prepared for one last attack. When Sidney would become visible he would go for the gun.

She yelled out in frustration and hit the "try again" button. Running back to the dead body of Andy she grabbed his leg and dragged him to the laptop, grabbing him under the arms and lifting him up to the screen. He was incredibly heavy. Dead bodies were heavier she recalled.

Holding his dead face in front of the company she hoped this worked.

The assault by 'The Hardy Boys', so called because they were proving to be hardier than the first wave of SWAT that they had taken down.

One of them even joined her on the floor, skimming bullets just over the carpet towards her, so that she had to rise onto hands and knees and scuttle back into cover whilst that being's fire blew wood chips out of the skirting board.

Ahead of her, a pale, bloodsoaked Cardigan, clearly wasn't quite yet out for the count, putting a SWAT man down with a shot to the face.

Maybe that was the key to this wave. Perhaps this lot were only vulnerable there.

Rising up into a squat, increasingly boxed in by the weapons fire around and over her head, she tried targeting their balaclava'd heads, and finally found some success, putting down five or six of them!

Pain knifed into her left side, just below the ribs, the impact throwing her off her feet and into the wall, where she hung suspended, flashed from human to blue and naked, then back to suspended policewoman, dropping back down onto her hands and knees as she wheezed through gritted teeth.

This hurt way more than that musket ball in the shoulder.

It was all she could do not to shut her eyes with the excruciating pain.

One of their unending number made a rush for the corridor as bullets pitted the wall around her, and slammed into her vest, pressing her into the wall again.

She got her Bren up to intercept the Hardy Boy before he disappeared around the corner, but only succeeded in blasting him in the side of the knee, before she lost sight of him.
