Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off—then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can.

Towards thee I roll, thou all-destroying but unconquering whale; to the last I grapple with thee; from hell's heart I stab at thee; for hate's sake I spit my last breath at thee. Sink all coffins and all hearses to one common pool! and since neither can be mine, let me then tow to pieces, while still chasing thee, though tied to thee, thou damned whale! Thus, I give up the spear!

"In 1868, on this 21st day of March, I myself, Captain Nemo, have reached the South Pole at 90°, and I hereby claim this entire part of the globe, equal to one–sixth of the known continents."
"In the name of which sovereign, Captain?"
    "In my own name, sir!"
So saying, Captain Nemo unfurled a black flag bearing a gold "N" on its quartered bunting. Then, turning toward the orb of day, whose last rays were licking at the sea's horizon:
"Farewell, O sun!" he called. "Disappear, O radiant orb! Retire beneath this open sea, and let six months of night spread their shadows over my new domains!"

Aft, a flag twenty feet in length streamed from the yardarm. It was red and blue and whiter than the arctic snow. Steaming straight for the enemy, HMS Ulysses had broken out her battle ensign.

It was not well to drive men into final corners; at those moments they could all develop teeth and claws.

Irene, who had been spending a fortnight of lionization in London, was amazed at the change when she returned and expressed her opinion of it by appearing in the High Street with the tip of her nose covered with green billiard chalk.

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his children, because he was the son of his old age: and he made him a coat of many colours.

“A lot of people would like to take after Cohen, I mean, he was the best fighter, the greatest thief, he—”
“A lot of men would,” Conina snapped. She leaned against a wall and glared at him.
“Listen,” she said, “There’s this long word, see, an old witch told me about it … can’t remember it … you wizards know about long words.”
Rincewind thought about long words. “Marmalade?” he volunteered.
She shook her head irritably. “It means you take after your parents.”
Rincewind frowned. He wasn’t too good on the subject of parents.
    “Kleptomania? Recidivist?” he hazarded.
    “Begins with an H.”
    “Hedonism?” said Rincewind desperately.
    Herrydeterry,” said Conina.

As they listened, they began to understand the lives of the Forest, apart from themselves, indeed to feel themselves as the strangers where all other things were at home.

There was a pregnant pause. It gave birth to a lot of little pauses, each one more deeply embarrassing than its parent.

“Some of you know me!” he shouted. “I’m Sergeant Keel, currently in command of the Treacle Mine Road Watch House! And I order you to dismantle this barricade–”
There was a chorus of jeers and one or two badly thrown missiles. Vimes waited, stock still, until they’d died away. Then he raised his hands again.
"I repeat, I order you to dismantle this barricade." He took a breath and went on. "And rebuild it on the other side of the corner with Cable Street! And put up another one at the top of Sheer Street! Properly built! Good grief, you don't just pile stuff up, for god's sake! A barricade is something you construct!"
