The name Madison (as a primarily-female first name) simply didn't exist until the movie Splash came out. In fact, it's sort of meant to be a joke that this mermaid - literally a fish out of water - chooses such a ridiculous name to go by.

Can't say I'll ever name a child of mine after a movie character. No Bellas, Madisons or Buttercups. No Lukes, no Leias. Those names are great for the family pet though.
