I think it's fantastic how you utterly missed my point which wasn't about the quality, or lack thereof, in Vertical Limit - it's that he signed on to direct that crapfest, so is his judgement sound?

You have to do a lot of things in show biz just to keep working. Directing crapfests is definitely one of them.

I watched some online video about the decision; it's polarising, but if he's not blonde that will certainly help me get over choice.

Maybe if you actually bothered to make your point a little bit more clearly it wouldn't be so easy to get mixed up. Too say you were being vague would be a bit of an understatement.

I wanted Pierce to come back but I guess Craig will do.

I wish Pierce was still playing Bond, I'm not very optimistic about Craig.

Hm. He looks fine to me. And the CNN video didn't show anything distressing. I don't really see what the hand-wringing is about.

For me, Brosnan being out will get me to the theatre. Here's to the hope that EON can turn the franchise around.[face_worried]

I'm a fan of Campbell. I listened to his commentary on GoldenEye and he has about the best philosophy of any Bond director to date and I've listened to a lot of their commentaries.

Plus, that Zorro thing was awesome. :p

    But!

If they screw up Casino Royale, which already got a royal pole axing via that awful, headache inducing David Niven comedy, I will be beyond angry at those people.

"Martin Campbell did a fantastic job with the BBC mini-series Edge of Darkness ... but he did have an excellent script to work from. He's really only as good as his script, ditto for Craig.

I worry about the script, so much depends on it"

THat's true for any director, he is only as good as the script he is given.
Campbell is not big enough to be able to mount his own projects, and he has to take work where he can get it. Most directors have served up thanksgiving dinner in their careers.
But I agree that they need to get some new writers. DAD was one of the worst scripted Bond films ever. Only "Moonraker" and "A View To A Kill" were worse, IMHO.
Let's see what Craig can do with the role.A lot of people seem to have written them off because their favorite did not get the role.
I am one of those who is glad it is not Clive Owen, whom I cannot stand.
Brosnan was good, but this would have been his last Bond film anyway. He was getting too old for the role.
ANd the people who argue that Brosnan was better then Connory ....give me a break.

..well, my initial reaction to the announcement of Craig was: "...what the heck?"

    His look is all wrong.

Though, the one saving grace is i think he has the CLASS to be Bond.

    I'll be cautiously optimistic.

I do wish it would have been Clive Owen, though..

I think he's going to be a Timothy Dalton type of Bond. One who may not be fully appreciated until after he's left the role. History says that he'll have a tough time replacing the popular Brosnan.

*Bold denotes a long run as Bond*

    Connery - Lazenby - Moore - Dalton - Brosnan - ?Craig?

I'm pretty psyched about the choice. It at least hints a return to a harder edged Bond. And Goldeneye was my favorite Bond film of the Brosnan era, so Martin Campbell seems like an OK choice to me.

Well, if you look at GoldenEye as a film, it's fantastic but as a Bond film it leaves much to be desired. It's a terrific action film but really, it deviates from the formula that they picked up again with TND.

I'm intrigued. Judging by his looks, I guess Craig is going to be more in the Dalton mould of Bond - which is a facet of Bond I thoroughly enjoyed.

Hmm, just noticed that Daniel Craig was born in England - a first for the franchise.

    Augmn is right.

    Sean Connery = Scottish
    George Lazenby = Australian
    Roger Moore = English
    Timothy Dalton = Welsh
    Pierce Brosnan = Irish
    Daniel Craig = English

As long as it's someone from England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales or Australia, it's OK. It should never, ever be an American, under any circumstances (or even a Canadian - it's the North American accent!)

Well... I am hugely disappointed James Purefoy didn't get the gig, but this Daniel Craig is a whole lot better than many of the others in the running so I guess I am okay with it.

That said, he's mostly played bad guys hasn't he?

Which is a shame, considering how the largest inspiration among the many inspirations for the character was William Stephenson, code named Intrepid, who was a Canadian. I don?t really disagree with the idea that Bond should have a British accent (I don?t think that the character works with an Australian accent), but it?s still a shame in my opinion.

"James Bond is a highly romanticized version of a true spy. The real thing is William Stephenson"

Yeah, I think he would've been good in the role. He hasn't done much visible work recently, even in England; he used to be on TV a fair bit in the UK, but the last thing I saw him in was Resident Evil [face_sick]. I wonder whether he really is dificult to work with.

I stand corrected. I was under the belief Moore was Welsh - a source I regarded as credible claimed no actor playing Bond had been English-born. However, I do agree with Ender's assessment of Australian or British Isles born actors playing the role. And now I can get rid of the evil image I had in my mind of Russell Crowe or Bryan Brown as Bond. [face_sick][face_sick] [face_sick]

I think Craig is a FANTASTIC choice for the role - I`m even quite glad he`s blonde, it gets us away from the streotypical Bond, which IMO has become TOO stereotypical - Bond films were in danger of becoming a parody of themselves. Anyone who`s seen Layer Cake will agree that DC is definitely eloquent enough to play Bond, and from what I`ve heard they want to get back to a grittier, darker Bond (truer to the novelisations) which will 1) suit Daniel Craig, and 2) update Bond for the 21st century and hopefully put it back amongst the competition from other "franchises".
