I doubt Finn's even there within a mile of when the Rey/Ben/Palpatine/Doctor Who third act wizard-fisticuffs go down.

Same planet, but I'd put money on Finn & Poe & Friends hanging back to attend to something else, fighting FO grunts or whatever, or even just Rey insisting they stay behind even though there's no other enemy present.

Atleast let him take on one of the KoR.

So has anyone read the comic yet? Someone on another site has and they say it's bad just like we thought. I wonder what the line is going to be this time. Are we going to get an admission that this is a bad look for Lucasfilm or at least not something we should expect for a supposed main character? Or are we going to get the oft repeated "Wait 'til the next one." line?

We have seen the KoR on Pasaana only in the VF picture. The trailer shows regular FO troops chasing Finn, Poe and Threepio. If the KoR are there and have transport then they would be sent after Rey as she is obviously the catch. And it will probably take all six of them to have a chance against Rey (if they are not FS and Rey has strengthened her powers in the last year).

Well, Finn sure as hell is going to fight someone. John didn't practice jump kicks and get his hands bloody by sitting around and looking good in his new outfit. It would be the absolute dumbest idea for Rey to take out the KoR, Kylo and The Senate all by herself. If I believed that was going to happen, I wouldn't waste my time with this film. Especially Rey.

I read it, it's not as bad as the preview pages let on but it doesn't add anything to Finn's backstory at all and it doesn't tell us anything about Finn's character/personality that we don't already know.

That's their writing though. They didn't HAVE to write him that way. That's what many people have issue with. They take a character who, on paper, has one of the most dramatic, dark, and compelling backstories and journey's in any SW project. But they don't use it because they constantly need to make him the "funny guy" or cut him off at the knees with gags. And yes, Han was used for comedy. But again, many would argue that Han also got to be cool and have some genuine swagger and get cool moments in a way that Finn, hasn't. That's the distinction.

And you can say "well the FO is meant to be less threatening than The Empire." Which A. Doesn't really line up with how overwhelming their victory was in TLJ, so it's not even consistent, and B. Then why should people care? Why would people find it MORE interesting when you're telling us "oh yes, these villains and less competent and more bumbling?" That's a step DOWN.

Again "they chose to write it this way" doesn't mean "it was a good idea."

its not a bad comic. it wasnt a infestation. it was bats who live on illum before it became star killer. finn rebelled a bit against the FO by relocating the bats . it didnt tell us anything new about finn but it did what the other age of comics which was have finn learn a lesson and plant his rebellous strike. it also showed how harsh the fo is by trying to destory a bat species that was native to star killer .

But if they didn't do that, who else would have been the black comic relief this trilogy so desperately needed?

So, I've read it. I still think the opening was unnecessary. Finn doesn't really have any other embarrassing lines or look like a buffoon after that. He uses a flame thrower and sets his captain (not Phasma) on fire when the captain gets covered in bats. For that, Finn is forced to clean up the mess with something that looks like a vacuum. He drives around on a speeder. Once Finn finds a nest of live bats and realizes that they aren't a threat, he's put on garbage escort duty for wanting to protect them. He and young lady ends up traveling together for three weeks to a garbage planet where he frees the remaining bats.

It could have been a lot worse, though it really doesn't add much to his personality that we don't know nor does it explore any skills unique to him. On a somewhat positive note, it seems less like Finn is someone that enjoys mopping for his slave owners, but rather someone that gets punished to do various dirty jobs because of his empathy and not following orders.

Okay...people really over blow the semantics of that line. He’s saying “Droid, please!” as in “Droid, please help me out!” Not “Droid, please!” as in a reference to the phrase with the racial epithet. At least, that’s what I’m assuming people are talking about here.

Meh. He could've just said "please" like he does later. The slang phrase can have other words in front of it too, but what they have in common is addressing the person with a word that denotes a classification. Common noun I guess would be the literary term. Like "droid." Was it deliberate? Idk. But my husband and I find it cringy.

Yeah, I dunno. Just felt like an ultimately useless story with a bunch of nameless throwaway characters. Like, what was up with the "Not-Rey" scavenger girl who throws away the First Order's junk on a "Not-Jakku" trash planet? And Finn somehow stashed the demon bats inside of the garbage transports for 3 weeks without her or his superiors noticing? Not to mention there just happens to be a little demon bat sanctuary on "Not-Jakku" for Finn to leave them in?

Just, I don't even get why this was made. Simply a waste of time for everyone involved, the only good part was when that guy got his head ripped off by a demon bat.

I agree. The story is pretty pointless honestly. Any generic hero character could have done what he did. Everything with Finn seems almost repetitive as well. He keeps ending up on terrible planets. He always has awkward encounters with strange creatures. He's apparently a magnet for dirty girls. He just didn't get a goodbye kiss this time.

You know, Finn would make a damn good smuggler with some of the things he gets away with.

Taking this to the Finn thread.

I gotta agree with @Darth Buzz about this, it seems that Finn's character was only meant to be a decoy protagonist for Rey in TFA given how he was treated in TLJ. A person in the subreddit r/starwarsspeculation made an interesting point about Finn being revealed as FS in that it wouldn't really change his significance to the story. Rey's the new Chosen One and has a strong connection with Kylo, the last Skywalker, Poe is Leia's heir and the new leader of the nuRebellion and while Finn has a connection to all three of them, he himself doesn't have anything going on and I feel like TROS won't add anything except perhaps a sibling connection with Naomi Ackie's character. I'd like to see a Stormtrooper rebellion, but it hasn't been set up at all. It'd probably happen if Finn were the ST's main character but as he's got fourth billing now under Rey, Kylo, and Poe, it probably won't happen.

Finn has nearly 50 minutes of screen time between the two movies. Only Rey has more screen time. Regardless of if people like the story or writing for the character, he’s not just a side character or decoy.

All that time is a waste because Finn was written to be a comic sidekick.

Hey, I agree some of the marketing and writing regarding Finn is problematic. But he’s still an awesome character and has lots of great moments in the films, and he’s still one of the lead characters. If we as fans just see him as a sidekick and comic relief then we’re doing the character the same disservice that we’re criticizing the writers and marketing team of.

Finn wasn’t a decoy protagonist in TFA - he runs the first two-thirds of the story more than Rey does, and while he slides into deuteragonist in the last third, his personal journey still continues second only to Rey’s story, and he’s still ultimately the one most responsible for Starkiller Base blowing up, and does get a personal confrontation against the main villain to cap off his plot arc and strategically holding him off and wounding him for Rey’s victory.

Even if TFA was originally intended to feature Finn as *just* a decoy protagonist, they would have failed in that mission by giving him such impact and primacy of focus in the film.

TLJ is where the argument gets interesting, because clearly Rian Johnson did not see a place for Finn anywhere near the A-Plot of the film... but he gave Finn the main spot in the B-Plot, as lazily written as it was, and it should be noted that while he wanted to treat Kylo as the ST male lead, he never actually executed and wrote him that way, since his character is still shrouded in mystery, and because he only saw Kylo that way in a faux-sympbiotic/parasitic relationship with Rey. He also still gave Finn more screentime than Kylo, even though he clearly didn’t care that much for the character - and we shouldn’t limit the creative output of the ST because of one director’s apathy.

And please, Force Sensotivity *would* change the story - it would mean Rey has no need of Kylo for a partner in rebuilding the Order and reinforce the need for a Kylo vs Finn rematch.

Deciding to leave/defect from the FO was a great moment.

Going toe to toe with Kylo knowing full well he’s going to lose and most likely die was a great moment.

I know the Canto Bight section gets a lot of criticism but I actually liked that whole part.

And I thought the fight with Phasma in TLJ was awesome.

And of course his camaraderie with Rey and Poe is great, and it’s looking like we’ll see a lot more of the three of them together in TROS, so that’s good.
