I really need to see the first John Wick, it sounds rad in a "disproportionate revenge for my dog" sort of way.

If you want to see Neo shoot lots and lots of people in the head, it's definitely worth it.

It's just rad, full stop. Keanu "acting", gunplay, and a Payday 2 tie in!

John Wick is a masterpiece. I mean, when I first heard about it, I was like, oh, yeah, sure, whatever. But I actually saw it twice in theaters. That almost never happens.

Oh and just wait until you see that dog. Nothing disproportionate about it. :p

I thought it was rather ho hum. Oh, Keanu shoots 800 guys in the head with the typical John Woo gun fu stuff you've seen a million times. Typical revenge fare, with the motivation naturally being a ridiculously over the top crime committed by ridiculously stupid criminals to kick off the revenge spree.

dead wife, shoot the dog, theft of sweet car, the whole enchilada of cliche reasons for a man to go on a killing spree

I've seen it a million times before, and there really wasn't anything that made it stand out over the rest. It wasn't bad, but because I had seen the same thing so many times before, I was pretty bored by it.

I think the big difference is that the action was really well-done, and the film leaned into the ludicrous plot, creating that ridiculous pile of revenge motives and building this nutty world of secret hitman hotels. It knew it was ridiculous and played it straight anyway because it knew playing it straight would be more fun than winking at itself. That and it just had a lot of really good action scenes.

It also has Ian McShane in a supporting role, which is never bad.

Yeah, the world-building was definitely part of it. That was something I'd never seen before. The performances are all really good. Michael Nyqvist is . . . a delight. And there is a fair amount of humor actually; it's just that the humor, odd as this sounds, is played straight. It has this whole strange atmosphere. The visuals are fantastic. The action is really, really good. The first scene with the twelve guys at the house is when the movie really takes off. That action scene is when you know the movie is really good; the bit with the cop right after is when you know its great. It is absolutely not just another rote action movie. "Seen it a million times before" is ridiculous.

Yeah, the first film's worldbuilding really set it apart (well, that and the fantastic action). I also kinda liked how the top mobster was basically "You idiot, you just started a revenge movie plot that is totally going to kill you" to the "main" villain.

Probably the only part of the film that is a letdown is the end showdown, which feels more tacked-on and generic than the rest of the film that preceded it.

Really looking forward to seeing how they expand upon that world.

Watched the first film a couple of months back - ye gods, I hadn't seen that level of sustained carnage and fun in years, it was brilliant.

The next one? When a trailer has him killing at least 10 guys in 90 seconds, it's good odds it'll be good.

Should be an entertaining film. I loved the first one and the cast only seems to have gotten better for Chapter 2.
