I can see your point but I think Johnson’s point is to give them more optimism for going to where this guy lives. It would be like if Obi-Wan knew a specific pilot he’d known from
the Clone Wars who’s primary place of operation was the Mos Eisley Cantina and just as we walked in that guy got shot and we end up meeting Han instead.

They wanted the guy to seem like the ultimate hero for hire to give them hope before taking that away. As far as total screen-time goes it’s probably less than 30 seconds and they would have needed to set-up DJ anyway. The casino resort setting also is meant to show Finn the spoils of riches while he’s still figuring out who he wants to be long-term.

You can separate out the character played on screen for a few seconds and the wider decision to spend as much time as they did on the Canto Bight excursion. The excursion took too much screen time overall and is the weakest part of the film. Having said that, I have no problem with the character played by Justin Theroux (for a few seconds). It is both surprising and unsurprising to see some react so negatively to 30-second cameo.

Soon there will be a new law similar to the Godwin's law.
Maybe it will be called TFN law. How long does a discussion take to identify someone as Plagueis

Someone pointed out that Master Codebreaker is wearing a white suit with a red flower like Indy in Temple of Doom and I always see that now.

Anyway for the 3 shots Theroux is in, I think he's hilarious. I love the way the music swells when he first appears and the dramatic push in as he holds up the dice for Lovey to blow on for luck and his offanded, uncaring dismissal of our heroes who get unceremoniously roughed up out of his line of sight, "Opp. Not now, Lovey! I'm on a roll!"

You know...I thought there was a missed opportunity there to have it be Lando. Would have been a nice cameo. Sure, Lando's not a codebreaker but perhaps Lobot could have been with him.

No, it should have been Larry. He should have been either this codebreaker or used instead of DJ.

I picked up the Art of The Last Jedi book. Apparently they had an entire story etched out for the Code Breaker. Had him playing a space piano for a Cabaret singer, meeting with Finn and Rose, taking them on a caper to steal blood diamonds from a bug warlord (which curiously appeared in the BTS reel, more on that later) and it concluded with him getting pinched by feds or some other interested party which got Finn and Rose tossed in the clink. I’m disappointed that none of that made its way into the final film. Fingers crossed for deleted scenes

They kept is moment short. No harm.
He's just part of the "everyone screws up" theme of the movie.

Though I do agree the "fly to a distant planet, find a hacker and sneak onboard Snokes ship" plan was ridiculously convoluted.

Holdo's "sneak away when no one's looking" plan was vastly more sensible.

Justin deserves a comic one shot, I think.

If this had been explained in the movie, I would have accepted the whole code-breaking plot. I left the theater confused about what the point of going to Canto Blight was if they didn't return with what they came looking for.

Probably the moustache and the slicked back hair? I've already said this, but I do get the impression that 'Master Codebreaker' is supposed to be a humorous parody of 'Golden Age' Hollywood, and especially the portrayal of masculinity associated with actors like Gable.

If we don't get at least a comic one-shot about the Master Codebreaker, I will consider it a major failing on the part of Lucasfilm and Marvel comics.:p

^ Oh! That's it exactly cuz both Lucas and Johnson are cribbing from Golden Age Hollywood stuff so him as Clark Gable is actually genius.

I actually really liked this guy. After all these years of Star Wars with countless characters, they managed to create one that was really different. I would’ve liked to see more of him.

I'll never understand why they didn't just land at a designated parking space, too expensive?

It’s like they couldn’t think of a reason for them to get arrested. Could’ve had them get caught without an invitation to a private event. Or even reveal that the cops are on the FO payroll and Finn was recognized as a wanted man. Nope, chose parking violation. I wish they actually got to speak with the Codebreaker
