You will be pleased to know that there has been someone who has cracked the model format from the game Knights Of The Old Republic. The tools required are:

    Kotor Tools
    Extractor Tool
    Maxscript .mdl Importer

First extract the .mdl and .mdx files using KOTOR Tools and then use the extractor tool which creates a .mdl out of the two, then use the script to import. The script doesn't work right with Max 4 and right now I can't try it with later versions, but people have said that it works with Gmax which can be downloaded for free. I'm sure that Gmax has some integration with 3ds Max so that won't be a problem.

If you need some help, go to THIS thread at lucasforums.com

It all works with Gmax, and it keeps the coordinates for the textures, I don't know if the script works with Max 5 and up but I was able to convert the models from Gmax into Max.

Dammit! I've just sold my copy of Kotor on ebay last week !!! Yeah I buy games sometime (last one is far cry, amazing)
And, of course, I've removed everything from my hard disk

Any way, I think it's cool because there was somme quiet good low poly meshes in this game. with somme tweak, like edge chamfering, or some extrusion, it would make nice high rez meshes.
And there are many mesh that can be used for background crowd.
dammit again! I'll have to get another copy!!
But for private use only of course. I think it would be trouble to host these on scifi3d :p

THe models need quite a lot of work to be usuable, they are quite dirty after all that conversion. Lots of join the dots in create poly if you know what i mean.

How are you converting them? Mine all converted perfectly, except for the ones that can't and turn out as a spiky ball.

they convert fine, like the model is all there, its just only using 3 sided polys, which don't smooth nicely.

if you have gmax you can convert them to md3 to try to import into another program. Gmax is free and can be downloaded at turbosquid.com

    Hello all,

As this thread says, I have been working on making a model exporter/importer for KOTOR.

I am not a 3D modeller, so I am having problems extracting some of the animations.

Is there a 3D modeller guru here willing to help me?

If you want to check out my latest scripts you can nab them at:

    Hey all,

This sounds truly exciting as I have just started 3d modeling/texturing/animating.

My only question is that is there any possible way that I can get the models and animations into the program: Blender 3d.

I don't know if anyone has heard of this program or not but it is a descent 3d program and it is free to download from: www.blender3d.com.

The reason I ask is that I have heard that it works with other 3d programs but I believe Blender uses different file names and file types. (though I have not tried personally, but am assuming as much...)

If anyone knows how to convert these KOTOR models and animations to be usable in Blender 3d, I would be grateful.

    THANKS,
    anakinskywalkerjedi

Are those files still there? For some reason I can never get to files that someone else has on Comcast. I get:
    Page URL Not Found!!

The requested page does not exist on this server. The URL you typed or followed is either outdated or inaccurate.

Maybe my Comcast doesn't like theirs?

If there is an other way to get the files, please let me know here or at optimusdesign@comcast.net
