Ok I have nothing to show right now as I am in pre-production stages. This scene will be part of my 3D demo reel for school. I've done alot of research so far, scoured wookiepedia, google, books, etc. However, I still have some questions. Like how many open pits are there. Just the one for the courtyard, if so where does the T-16 go? It has to land in some sort of an open pit and its not in the garage. In A New Hope when Luke is in the garage with the droids he walks out on a ramp when Beru calls. To the left of the ramp I think is the T-16. Which must mean there is a small open pit between the garage and the courtyard. Also Luke's X-34 Landspeeder sits behind the Igloo does it not?

Here is a quick mock up of what the overhead layout may look like.

    [image=http://i65.photobucket.com/albums/h201/boostermoose/Map1.jpg]

Is this the T-16 in an open pit?

Also, if anyone has seen Lars Homestead done in 3D please tell me. Its in Galaxies but is very low res and ugly, and not done very well in Battlefront.

Oh yah here's a Gamorrean I modeled hoping to texture it soon, will not been in this scene at all.

I believe the T-16 is in the garage, hidden in one of the outer areas, however, I might be thinking of how it was in AOTC, if not them there just might be the family speeder in the garage.

You may want to look for a book called "Inside the Worlds of Star Wars." It's illustrated, but I recall seeing the layout of the place.

My attempt to build an action figure playset of the homestead has been stonewalled by the same goofs in the set layout that are bugging you. What we have here is a goof-up on the part of the set designers and set builders. Often (as was the case with the Millenium Falcon) the sets are constructed and filmed apart from/and at different times than the exterior locales. What can result are interiors and exteriors that simply will not match up. The Falcon, for example, is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside! We hobbyists just have to look the other way and find creative solutions. After sketching the homestead many times I've found a compromise. The skyhopper is plainly visible and appears to sitting in a "pit" which is connected to the main pit by a catwalk and doorway. We know it's close to the main pit because Beru's voice is easily heard. When looking at the overhead crane shots of the entire compound (freeze frame in ep. 4 or 2) you can clearly make out a second, smaller pit near the main pit. This smaller pit MUST be the pit that the skyhopper sits in because the hopper is like 15-20 feet tall! Now, for the creative solution. It has long been assumed that the disk-like "roof" sitting behind the igloo is the roof of Luke's workshop. In order to pull this all together, that paradigm must be abandoned. There are 2 reasons for this. First, the workshop archway (the one which leads to the catwalk) is obviously situated INSIDE the smaller pit and at least 10 feet below ground level. Second, the workshop sits too deep in the wall of the pit for that disk thing to be the roof. In other words, the workshop would have to have a much higher ceiling in order for this to work. My conclusion is that the disk which is visible on the surface is NOT the roof of Luke's shop, but that of a separate room or workspace. One point which helps to cement this p.o.v. is the scene at night when Luke and 3P0 are in the garage. Notice how dark it is in the room. Yet, as they climb up out of the igloo it is clear that the lights are on BRIGHT in the room beneath the disk (the little orange "windows" are lit up). I've abandoned the notion that the little orange "windows' in Luke's workshop are in fact windows. If you see them as simply "lightbulbs" it allows for other options. I've sketched a plausable layout which places the workshop several feel deeper than previously assumed. Also, I've always wondered how the family landspeeder got down into that little room. My solution for this is that the disk on the surface is actually a hydraulic platform which raises up allowing vehicles and equipment to be hoisted to the surface or lowered to the workrooms and passageways beneath. If you're interested I can email you my sketch. My email is thefez@mac.com.
Sorry, I know this was a bit longwinded, but I believe you might be the only other human on planet earth who has been asking these questions. I'm not alone! My wife is giving me the "you starwars guys are nuts" look. Ha.

I think that there's just too much that we don't know about the homestead to be able to connect everything to each other. I'm sure we saw less than half of the entire thing so it's kind of hard to do everything.

Thanks so much thefez, I actually went out and spent like 40 bucks on 'Star Wars the complete locations'. They have an amazing illustration of the homestead. It answers many questions and I think they had to make compromises themselves trying to get a quality layout of the thing. While I was observing this sketch and watch ep 4 i noticed a discrepancy in the illustration and emailed the artist. And amazingly enough he emailed me back. But go take a look at it yourself to see what you think. I am using it as my main reference.

Many of your assumptions agree great with this illustration. The t 16 is in a small pit beside the courtyard but the garage roof (they refer to it as a tech dome) is where luke's shop is. Yes the shop does elevate up to the surface to let out the Lars family speeder.

As for the status of my scene, I have most of the courtyard modeled and other things like the igloo. I will post an update with pics here in a couple of days.

    Thanks for the email.
I'm not too tech savvy, but I tried to post the little sketch I did. I have to get my hands on that book. How'd you get the artist to email you???

Thanx for the email fez I really appreciate it. But the artist I just googled him and found his website which had his contact info.

So here are the first updates. The main geometry is pretty well done. Next comes all the props and of course textures. I chose not to make the second pit with the T-16 because of time constraints. However, I will have the crater terrain for the smaller pit and just not have the final renders show whats below. Critiques and Comments welcome.

That's great! Luke's garage and home have always been my favorite sets because it felt so real and lived in. Really cool to see the farm from a different vantage point. Can't wait to see more. Here are pics of the main pit some travelers took while on vacation in Tunisia. http://www.webshots.com/search?media=photo&query=tunisia+star+wars&queryChannel=&sortBy=&source=search_menu
Might help with the stuff you can't see on the dvd's. Again, very, very cool 3-d model.

Update with all extra props and what not. Update took forever due to other projects. Look close and maybe you can see the treadwell droid in there. Textures coming soon.

Good layout. Are you keeping it low-rez? It would be cool to see you start chamfering edges and adding details.

Heres some screengrabs of it, no lighting in it yet, not everything has textures on it yet. Also got to add much more detail to all the textures.
