Music lists are stupid in general. Too many genres and eras plus personal preferences.

For Whom the Bell Tolls is absolutely magnificent. Fade to Black as well. But I'd say Ride the Lightning is basically half great and half good, while Master of Puppets is . . . like every single song is amazing. I think Master of Puppets is probably my favorite song of theirs and Orion is my favorite of their instrumentals as well. For Whom the Bell Tolls is absolutely top five. Hmm, okay, let's do this off the cuff. Top Ten in alphabetical order:

    Broken, Beat & Scarred
    Creeping Death
    Enter Sandman
    Fade to Black
    For Whom the Bell Tolls
    Master of Puppets
    One
    Orion
The Thing That Should Not Be
    Welcome Home (Sanatorium)

I had forgotten Creeping Death was on Ride the Lightning. That's a great one. The one I most need to revisit is Kill 'Em All which I remember loving when I first heard it, but none of the songs have really stayed with me as potential top ten material. I think my number 11 would probably be Sad But True which is worth talking about just for the drum production which is amazing. Or it might be Disposable Heroes.

What's Going On is absolutely essential and is a top ten all time album. The fact that all the lyrics on it could be applied to today is very, very sad.

    Pet Sounds is a masterpiece.

Abbey Road in the top ten, and not Revolver? Meh.

Like what you like, I say. My top 500 albums would mostly be weirdo prog stuff because that's what i like.

I’m surprised that The Verve’s Urban Hymns didn’t deserve a place. Also nothing from The Pogues. Rum, Sodomy and the Lash or If I Should Fall from Grace with God should have earned a spot somewhere.

But that’s just my subjective grumblings and I could write a long list of albums that I think should be included. The important thing is that the list is representative of different genres and periods and might introduce listeners to artists and albums that they have never considered or heard of.

I wonder if how we consume music nowadays affected the list? Who even listens to an album from start to finish anymore?

I can't take a 500 count list seriously when it doesn't include Elbow's Seldom Seen Kid.

Greatest Hits albums should not be included and

    Definitely the best of Brooks.

I was lucky enough to meet Guy Garvey and the band in 2003 when they were promoting Cast of Thousands. Garvey took requests from the crowd and the whole band stayed until every fan had a signed album. Garvey was relaxed and really engaged with his fans. I’m not the biggest Elbow fan, but they were a class act.

I was able to see them in Chicago a couple years ago and it was fabulous.

Do you really never listen to an album in one go these days? Usually the only albums I pick and choose tracks from are greatest hits albums and the odd one or two that are too damn long (NIN's The Fragile springs to mind).

I can't imagine listening to Dark Side of the Moon without going through the whole thing, for example.

I do! I think that listening to just one song out of a well-crafted album is almost akin to reading just one chapter in the middle of a book. Then again, I'm a weirdo.

I agree. It’s how the artist meant it to be experienced. I have a tendency to just go for playlists on Spotify though

I can't imagine listening to Jethro Tull's Thick as a Brick without listening to the whole thing. After all, it's one 43 minute long song. :p

I'll grant you Master of Puppets is remarkably consistent, I just don't think it has as many highs as Ride The Lightning.

    My Top Ten would be:
    - Human
    Ride the Lightning
    For Whom The Bell Tolls
    Fuel
    The Call of Ktulu
    Master of Puppets
    Sad But True
    2 X 4
    One
The Thing That Should Not Be

I disassemble albums into my own playlists all the time. I’ll make a point to cackle every time I do it from now on.

I can’t believe Dankmus’ magnum opus It Was the Best of Times, It Was the Blurst of Times didn’t take the top spot, and indeed all spots, forever, seeing as it features several of the crowning artistic achievements of this or any planet.

I enjoy the discover weekly playlist Spotify creates for me. I like to think there’s at least one algorithm out there that has my best interests at heart.

We should start a thread to share playlists and mixes. I enjoy playing other people’s mixtapes.

I listened to a Pharcyde album and a Commodores album today.
I enjoy listening to albums, but only old ones or lo-fi ones. Modern music is compressed to the max, you just can't get a break. There's no breathing room.
