My father spent most of his life collecting Native American artifacts and craftworks. He searched for arrowheads as a teenager then started going to shows and buying and selling everything until finally his house was stuffed with pottery and rugs and headdresses and stone tools like some really bad roadside museum behind a rural gas station. He backed that all up by being a voracious reader of all scholarly work on native American archaeology and writing on the subject, even though it wasn't his field.

His collection at one point was probably worth a quarter million dollars or more. I know in his mind he undertook it with the utmost respect for a largely lost culture, but I often wondered what Native Americans think of all those collectors and their endless shows at bad motel "convention centers."
