ST Luke and Rey: their dynamic from TLJ and beyond

I'm surprised we haven't had a thread for these two and their dynamic before.

So Luke and Rey: what is this mentor/learner dynamic going to look like?

I’m still “Umm...uhh...hmm...” about this one, frankly. And it has nothing to do with related/unrelated, oddly enough!

We know there’ll be a training “element,” and that it won’t be like the Luke/Yoda or Luke/Obi-wan relationships. We also have Daisy saying that the journey will be more “conversation” than “big adventure.” Also, that the relationship is tied up in Luke’s reasons for being on Achoo, and that “the process of figuring out what that [the reasons] is and unpacking it is the journey for Rey.”

I assume that they’ll go to the Jedi temple at some point. It looks like, from the recent poster, that they might practice-duel.

But it’s all very heavily dependant on, well, why Luke is there. We don’t have the whole story - RJ has signaled as much - and it won’t be all about Ben’s fall. We know we’ll learn more Force lore, but the emotional dynamic is difficult to discern. Unless Rey delivers up a penitant Ben Solo to his uncle, Rey won’t be able to solve that problem for Luke. And we don’t know what Luke will do for Rey, emotionally (other than, apparently, piss her off!).

I’ve heard some reasonable guesses, but I’m pretty sure we won’t be getting a generic Karate Kid 2.0 relationship.

I can far more easily spec in-depth about Rey and Kylo’s relationship, frankly.

we have to solve the "beating heart" quote. I really hope She doesn't spend 2/3 of her arc chasing Luke around asking for help. Could we throw in the Force ghosts also? I think one of the ghost(s) is going to be a big part in getting Luke to focus.

Obviously [Luke] doesn’t know who she is when she turns up, like with this freakin’ light saber he hasn’t seen in however long, so that in itself is a big difference. And then as things go on, I think there’s an expectation… there’s always been an expectation on Luke as in his potential, what he can do, and what he should do, much like with Rey. So in that sense they’re kind of similar, but obviously the dynamic has changed because she’s expecting something from him this time. It remains to be seen how he reacts to that.

That last one makes me cringe. I know it will be better executed, but describing it that way makes. it sound lik a cliche lifetime movie. Come on Mark your supposed to be making the movie sound good.

Luke definitely does not give Rey the warm welcome he received when he went in search of Alec Guinness’ Ben Kenobi in 1977’s original Star Wars. She is warned. She is given an explanation. Nevertheless …

“She’s so hopeful to everything,” Ridley says. “And obviously there’s a hint of, ‘What the hell?’”

This rejection hits Rey’s abandonment issues. Hard.
As we know, the young scavenger was ditched as a child on the hardscrabble junkyard world of Jakku by unknown parents and left for years to survive on her own. But lately, she has gotten accustomed to making fast friends, like BB-8, Finn, Chewbacca, and General Leia Organa. Even the murderous Kylo Ren became fascinated by her strength and resilience after kidnapping her.

“Regardless of everything else, she’s been welcomed. No one ever really turns away from her,” Ridley says.

That changes when she arrives on Ahch-To.

Luke’s brush-off makes Rey miss the gruff warmth of Han Solo, Ridley says, giving us a peek inside the head of her character: “’Oh my God, this other man that I lost within a couple days was somewhat of a father figure. Now he’s gone, and instead I’m with this grumpy guy on an island who doesn’t want me here.’”

But Ridley says Rey is also placing huge expectations on Luke. She arrives on the island of Ahch-To, site of a primitive Jedi temple, not to become a hero herself, but to shove Skywalker back into the fight.

“I don’t think one girl, who he doesn’t know, turning up with a lightsaber is gonna make him go, ‘Oh, s—, yeah, of course I’ll get back into the action,’” Ridley says.

“But does he not know her?” Hamill says in his separate interview.

“The very first step in the writing of this was figuring out why he’s on that island,” Johnson says. “We know that he is not a coward. He’s not just hiding because he’s scared. But we also know that he must know his friends are in danger. He must know the galaxy needs him. And he’s sitting on this island in the middle of nowhere. There had to be an answer. It had to be something where Luke Skywalker believes he’s doing the right thing – and the process of figuring out what that is and unpacking it is the journey for Rey.”

Luke Skywalker is annoyed with Rey.

Rey is expecting Luke Skywalker to be thrilled to get his lightsaber back in Last Jedi. But he's not happy to see her. "She thinks there’s going to be a warm welcome. But Luke went to this island to get away and he doesn’t want to be disturbed," says Ridley.
Don't fret. Skywalker takes "a tremendous journey from the beginning of the relationship to ultimately where they end up in the film." Our personal theory: He had coffee.

This has been the comment that has stuck out to me the most about Luke/Rey's relationship. Yoda was a reluctant teacher of Luke so Luke being the same is par for the course. Also - Rian saying its a training element to "it" tells me "it" (being their relationship) is much more than trainer/student. And I seriously doubt they become enemies.

What was it like to work with a “Star Wars” legend like Mark Hamill? What was amazing was the first time, because I was working more with Harrison (Ford). I was like, I don’t want to disturb him (Mark).
We had conversations about life. Advice was never given without asking, if you know what I mean. Working with him was wonderful.
He’s exactly how he always is. He’s very talkative, warm and a really good actor, so there were moments where I just felt like, wow. I remember at one point, I went over to Rian (Johnson, director) and I was like, “Oh my God, that was moving.” I felt really lucky that I was able to have that with him.

Maybe it does. In one of the trailers, Rey has the saber in her knapsack when she is training alone at the cliffside which makes it look like Luke gave it back to her.

yes, I cannot imagine this goes for more than 1st act and partly 2nd act. There must something happen in 2nd act to get Luke out of it.

Hopefully we don't have to spend a big chunk of the movie with Rey trying to talk to him, and him just being a standoff-ish jerk to her for no good reason. Because that could get really tedious and annoying (I've seen it happen many times before in other films).

The end is what counts, not how you get there. As long as in the end Luke has become the same figure to Rey as Obi-Wan was to him, that's what makes it Star Wars-esque.
