Yes and yes. You can see a very small glimpse of Appa in the Superbowl trailer (10 seconds in on the upper left-hand side).

Also, Dee Bradly Baker (who does their voice in the cartoon) is doing their voices in the film.

And we got a full trailer today:

Haters be damned, I'm getting pretty excited about this. Will it suck? Possibly. But I'm still excited.

Wow! That was......ridiculously dramatic [face_plain] Some observations:

-Looks like they took pretty much everything from the siege of the Northern Water Tribe in order to look "teh awsum!11!1!1!"

    -Where's Zuko's scar?

-Sounds like the trailer is narrated by Avatar Roku.

    -WHERE IS ZUKO'S SCAR?

    - about Iroh's casting.

-WHERE THE [censored] IS ZUKO'S SCAR?!?

Zuko's scar is there. It looks like they made it more heavy on the side of his eye and only slightly around the eye. Not as huge and jarring as the cartoon version, though.

    Visually, I'm pleased.

I'm still not happy with the white-washing. Certainly looks cool.

However, I think I'm less pissed at this point about Noah Ringer, for some reason that kid doesn't stick out as much as a cracker in an Asian world. Sokka and Katara, however, do. Especially in shots that show Inuit Water Tribe children. That sucks. Major foul up there.

And, yeah, Uncle Iroh horribly miscast. Sammo Hung would have been better...

I will say that I rather like the re-styled "Airbending Master" tattoos [face_thinking]

My guess is that in the interest of pursuing the Sokka/Yue love story, there won't be time to really get into Suki and the Kyoshi Warriors. More likely, they'll expand on that if there's a Book 2. And so help me, if King Bumi gets the short-shrift...

If King Bumi's not there I'm out. Seriously. He's a high point, and a touchstone for Aang in an essentially unfamiliar world.

I just watched the trailer (and went "eh"). Is this movie just going to cover the first season/book, with the idea that sequels will cover the other two? (Sorry if this has been asked before; I didn't read the whole thread.)

Yes, The Last Airbender covers Book 1: Water, so everything from The Boy in the Iceberg to The Siege of the North. IIRC, two other movies for the remaining books have already been given the green light. I wonder, assuming they get to Book 3, if they will change the ending of the Aang/Ozai duel.

The thing that most concerns me is that each "book" contains an incredible amount of awesome story to try and cram into approximately 2 hours worth of movie each:

Book One has King Bumi, Kyoshi island (and Suki), the Southern and Northern Air Temple, Master Jiong Jiong, Aang's journey to the spirit world and the Fire Bending Temple, the resulting exposition about Sozin's Comet, Zuko's history with Ozai, Jet, and of course the siege of the Northern Water Tribe, Yue, and Master Paku.

Book Two has the introductions of Azula, Mei, Ty Lee, and Toph; the beginning of Zuko's heel/face turn, Aang's difficulty learning earthbending, the White Lotus Society, the perils of the Avatar State, "Appa's Lost Days," a metric crap-ton of stuff in Ba Sing Se, Zuko's face/heel turn, and the epic awesomeness of Aang/Katara vs. Azula/Zuko

Book Three has Team Avatar attempting to travel incognito in the Fire Nation, the Roku/Sozin backstory, bloodbending, the Day of Black Sun, the Boiling Rock, Zuko "re-learning" firebending and teaching Aang, Mei & Ty Lee turning against Azula...

Heck, "Sozin's Comet" takes up almost 2 hours by itself!

There's going to be so much trimmed out... honestly, I don't know that it can be done well enough to really satisfy the fans.

And that's just on top of my other well known objections.

I don't think you understand how much of Book 1 can easily be cut, shortened, or re-imagined and have it still be AWESOME. It doesn't have to be a carbon copy of the show to be good. If you want the show, watch the show. If you want to watch a new, fresh translation that puts a new spin on things, watch the movie. Don't expect the movie to be the show, because it won't be. Just stop complaining about it being different, because that's the whole point.

The unnecessary re-imagining is a big problem, IMO. In particular, the racialist implications of casting brown people as the bad guys and white people as the saviors.

    That should bother you.

It's not been long enough since the ending of the show to justify this.

Well, it doesn't. I'd rather be optimistic and enjoy the movie for what it is then complain about the "racist" casting, which isn't racist at all in my opinion, or for that matter, lots of other people's opinions. And last time I checked, Zuko and Iroh aren't bad guys, and there have been pictures of caucasian Fire Nation extras. And I don't believe that M Night would be purposefully racist to "brown" people by casting them as bad guys, considering he's Indian himself.

um...please elaborate? That makes no sense to me whatsoever.

The trailer did look pretty neat, but a little too much like a Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon kind of movie. Nice scenes with Katara and Sokka huddled together and him holding the lantern, and the Fire Nation army. Yue looked good and recognizable. Aang seems too serious though, and the skinny guy playing Iroh?

As for the 'whitewashing', I'm not particularily happy about it, but I don't know if it's racist. In fact, has anyone thought perhaps Katara and Sokka were made white so it wouldn't seem racist? Considering Aang is white and the important 'savior', and they're just peasants, and kind of the equivalent of being his background helpers?

And as for Aang being a white kid.. Aang does not strike me as Asian in the show. 'But he has an Asian name!' So what? I mean, look at Obi-Wan Kenobi.
