No idea what role Matt Smith is playing. But everyone seems to be forgetting that not only is Palpatine in the movie Ian McDiarmid is too. JJ and Kathleen confirmed he was on set too.

So how do you think Smith playing a clone of Palpatine would work? Quick scenes before we see it aged to Ian? Matt Smith playing a clone dubbed with Ian’s voice??

Obviously there are a lot of unknowns here. But they deliberately revealed Ian being in the movie. While Yoda was not advertised in TLJ at all. He clearly has a big part. It would be a waste of Ian’s talents to have someone else play the part for much time. Plus Matt Smith is too big a name to play scenes just to setup another actor.

Given the use of Messenger Robots in the Battlefront 2 Story Campaign is it possible this is just an advanced robot designed to simulate the Emperor as a literal figurehead?

So an inquisitor or an apprentice of one of Palpatine's dark side acolytes?

I don't see how they would expand Snoke's role which is unexplained already anyway. At this point they need to focus everything around Sidious' plans and how Snoke was a part of that.

I actually wondered why they didn't reveal Palpatine possessed Leia's unborn child explaining the darkness she felt.
Suffering from amnesia from his near death experience it took him ascending to Snoke's throne before eventually discovering what Luke found out back then.
Imagine Luke trying to help Ben discovers Palpatine's spirit possessing his nephew and caught unawares he's left mentally unhinged by the experience whilst both naturally not realise that so-called lightsaber fight was purely in the mind not actual reality with Luke left knocked out but alive whilst Ben fled.
Why didn't they explain to Rian the concept of a sequel movie and why if Abrams was involved with TLJ did he not point out how much of a clusterfcuk it was turning into... unless that's what got Colin Trevorrow sacked?

Sounds like the Inquisitors might have been sort of done-and-dusted by the time the OT rolled around, no? Both that and the fact Smith's not really old enough to have been around beforehand.

Sounds like it's something new to me, only first met Sheev as a spirit/whatever form he's in now.

They could simply be playing him as an "acolyte of the beyond" to give the book readers some nice canon moments.

The general audience doesn't care about why zealots are zealots. His characters needs about 5 mins of explanation and then he's used for his purpose.

The Acolyte from Beyond, a servent that serves as a vessel for Palps consciousness. I was only messing about when I mocked up the potential concept of Smith's character but it seems to be consistent with the rumours are saying...

This assumes that JJ has read or at least familiarized himself with the nu EU, which I find hard to believe.

Terrio is co-writer, he loves extended lore and canon. Also giving these characters little hints for EU readers isn't JJ's job. He can ask the story team "hey i need a name and group for this zealot character".

Perhaps the rumors are misinterpreted, and Matt Smith is playing a young version of Snoke, a dark side disciple who willingly lets Palpatine possess him, after which his body takes the ultimate toll...

Why would they need Smith to play a younger version of Snoke when they could create a younger CG Snoke and have Andy Serkis reprise his role?

Basically, yeah. If he truly wasn't in the movie, they would say so. The secrecy means that his role is clearly quite important (as rumours seem to suggest), or is at least something they really don't want to disclose. MSW is pretty sure he's connected to Palpatine in some way. I'm inclined to believe they're in the right ballpark.
