I have a new years resolution: To stop being so self righteous...

Last night I was invited to an art thing...free booze..bit of a shamooze...little did I know I'd end up arguing with this bloody art student..( Her Argumemt: Art has to be elite to succeed. My Argument: Art sould be for the masses..and artist should reflect life..not their own little universe..)

Anyway...she started using loads of big words that I didn't understand..so I called her Bossed Eyed..

Now I feel bad...

 

dude, don't get me started on Art.

I think that 'artists' are elite because they can place a few blobs of paint on the canves and call it 'art' , more like crap.

art.

spinoza puts it as 'Any human creation which contains an idea other than its utilitarian purpose'

basically he says the purpose of Art lies in its ability to portray a concept, an idea.

the simplest example i can come up with is andy warholes soup tin.

the viewer needs no pre existing notions of what is going on in the picture to appreciate its meaning. It is a picture of a tin of massed produced, branded soup. something that everyone knows and can identify. there is no hidden 'psychological' meaning here, it is what it is. (ts hyper realistic surealism)

thats what makes it art.

simple really.

good call on the boss eyed bit my man. art is for the masses, but is iconised by the elite.

I did a five year stint in Art History....I think I'm safe in saying I know my stuff..I can apprciate what Monnet was doing with his expressionism..what Man Ray, Duchamp, Warhol, Dali, Degas, Goya, Rothko, Pollock, Hockney were all getting at...

But people artist/media whores like Tracy Emin..I'm sorry but that ain't art..it's a publicity stunt sponsered by Becks and Satcchi and Satcchi..

As for the girl ( with boss eyes ) she looked visibly upset..which I'm afraid made me feel really bad...put me right off my beer
