Alright, I think I found us something to participate in. In case you guys didn't know, there is a sci-fi con in Memphis every year. (I know, I didn't know it either!!)Here is the site: Mid-South Con

Alright, they have scheduled a time for us to have a SW panel discussion and we get to kinda run it and come up with ideas, so be brainstorming and thinking about who would be a good person to run the panel!!! Also, Michael Sheard, who played Admiral Ozzel, is going to be there and may participate in our panel!!!! :D

Also, costumes are welcome!!! Fix that Vader Tim!! On the Friday the con starts, around lunch, they plan on visiting St. Jude in costume. All I can say is that I'm there.

I'm gonna find out if we can put up a card table with flyers for Memphis Fan Force to hand out. It would be good for a member to be there handing them out the whole time!

I'll be the middle man with the Con rep. This is our chance to make Fan Force known in Memphis!!!

I knew about the con. I didn't go last year but I was wanting to go this year and I would be more than happy to stick to the booths. not exactly sure what you want the panel to be about. I will definetly have my TCG game out in case I can find someone to play me out there. Also do we get a discount sence we're helping out.

    Panel discussions......hmmmmm.....

"The Effects of Star Wars Upon Socio-Political Modern Thought"

    or

"God, my 12" Jango Fett is F-ing Awesome!!"

(I've been reading The Onion a lot lately. Can you tell?)

Maybe we should contact the local universities and see if any of the Anthropology/Sociology Professors would be interested in speaking about SW and it's effect on the landscape of modern life.

Or we could just get a fan who has a massive collection to endlessly rant about the lack of a Rick McCallum action figure.

As for the Vader Costume... Dunno if that will be in the stars that soon in the future. Always in motion the future.

OMG, how fun!!! It'd be really cool to have shirts or buttons to wear with our FF logo...when we get a logo. ;)

I used to do a lot of community info stuff when I worked at Baptist and I've got the "man a booth & pass out flyers" thing down to a science, LOL. Just tell me I don't have to take blood pressures.

And count me in at St. Jude!!

heres a picture of me and my son.he has an awesome replica jawa costume, best ever built!we did an appearance for toys for tots sunday and were on the news.it was cool.

Wow, looks like I missed some fun at the IMax showing! Nice costume, skip!

I will definitely be at the Con. It sounds pretty cool. I hope they get some more information on their site soon, I'd like to see what other things they have planned.

Edit: I've updated our site with information on the Con.

I first heard of the "Con" last year, but didn't get a chance to go...perhaps I'll actually use a vacation day and take some time off from work and come down that Friday. Sounds like it could be alot of fun.

Well guys, I guess I just picked up the torch. I hope no one here in the SMT is offended, but I took the liberty of playing "Interim City Rep" and have started tracking down info on getting involved in this year's MidSouth Con. I'm starting small, as in just thinking of securing us a booth. Here's what I need to know from our members: How deeply involved do we want to get in this year's convention? What sort of activities do we want to plan? Do we want to sponsor a SW RPG game?

Any suggestions and comments would really help at this juncture. Considering that we're a group of less than twenty, we may want to think small this year, with hopes that an appearance in this year's Con will help grow our membership. (If that's what we actually want!!! Hehehehehehe. Ahem. Just kidding!!!!)

Let's get the ball rolling and hear some suggestions!!!

I vote for starting small, then growing. We can always do bigger next year.

I was sort of leaning towards the same thing, Rhonda. I think we're too short on time right now to do anything large and glitzy, plus being such a small group with no financial backing thanks to dues and such, we really can't ask twelve people absorb the cost of something large, if it comes down to that.

My next stop is the MidSouth Con website and message board, where I signed up last night and posted questions. I also emailed MidSouth Con and have yet to get a response.

EDIT: No word from MSC as of yet, I'll let y'all know when I finally hear something.

    Hey guys,

glad somebody's talking about this.I also contacted midsouth-con,i never heard back.

If you get on that forum find out about getting a table and pass on my info as well.I believe they were going to give you one anyway.I was curious as to what you needed money for?are they charging you guys for something?let me know if you have any luck contacting them.we too want to set up a table.

Im trying to get the 501st there to participate .having an authentic starwars actor is great for us.it will bring out real starwars fans.they will love seeing the 501st doing guard/escort duty.

if someone gets a chance Pm me and let me know whats up.

    thanks

Skip1: Having never attended, much less been involved in, a Con, I haven't the foggiest if we'd have to rent a booth. Knowing that having to rent a booth is the norm for trade shows, I figured that participating in MidSouth Con would be much the same. When I find out something, I'll pass the info on to you. We'd be happy to see you there.

    Thanks,
i believe they allow for a few local tables at these cons.I thought that chewbracca already contacted them and said you guys could have a table.he even mentioned something about a panel on star wars.

I would be willing to help out with that panel if its till something they want to add.I already have a number of troopers wanting to come to this con.If we dont get a table then we may just come crash the thing in costume.

We have already secured a table at adventure con in knoxville.they jumped on the chance to have us there.

We dont have a single 501st member in memphis.I come there all the time to visit family.ill be there next weekend ,anything going on?anybody need vader to show up for anything?
plus we'll be in jackson in feb.

    for any of you guys that havent seen pics of us check out the site ;
    www.501stso.com

look at all the pics of the huntsville imax and the hendersonville,tn parade for sure.

plus we were in the starwars insider that just came out.if you look at the picture from the nashville imax premiere youll see me as vader and glenn and mark as TK's.

    talk to ya later

Skip, next time your in Memphis, let us know. Speaking for me it'd be great to work with you guys. I check your boards occasionally because I go to Nashville once every few months. I'll let you guys know next time I come. Our groups should try to do something together. We should plan on it.

I asked for some suggestions and I got 'em.

Jerry Hager, Head of Gaming for MidSouth Con, sent me an email with some suggestions of things we could do for this year's convention. Here is a copy of the email he sent to me:

    Hi Tim,

Let's see if I can think of a few things you all could do at
    MidSouthCon:

You could run some Star Wars RPGs.

You could compete in the masquerade (there are two categories: costume
    with skit, and costume only).

We could give you an hour slot for a panel on costuming (or anything
else interesting that your group would like to do).

We also have a few of our guests and attendees with costumes go over to
St. Jude's Children's Hospital to visit with some of the kids. I'm sure
they would love to see some people dressed up in Star Wars garb, so it
would be great if a few of you would come along.

Staff a table to promote your group.

Show up, see panels, chat with the guests, play games, filk, enjoy the
banquette and other festivities, and generally have a good time.

I'm probably forgetting a lot of other stuff you could do, but that's
what comes to mind off the top of my head.

    Talk to you soon,

    --Jerry

So, any of this appeal to any of you?

Skip: If you're lurking out there, I bet you and your fellow 501st member would be a shoo-in for a panel on costuming.

Tim: You're the local RPG expert. Interested in running an RPG? (Or any other RPG'ers who I may have missed, of course.)

Anybody interested in doing a ten minute operatic rendition of Star Wars set to Puccini's La Boheme?

I'm kidding about that last one.....

    Maybe.

If anyone feels any interest in any of the above ideas, or any other idea, boiling within them, please give me a shout. I'm going to try and attend the next MSC planning meeting to see just what goes on and what our role could possibly be. I need to know how committed we plan to be to this thing, and just how involved we want to be before I go to the meeting- whenever that may be. (Still TBA)

    So.....

    just WTF is "filking"?????
