Mini-Games Challenge!

Welcome one and all to the mini-games challenge! This idea came to me as I (and I hope many others) will be practicing “social distancing” during the current pandemic. Variety is important to keeping sane during times of isolation, so this came out of a desire to have more choice in writing challenges. Think of this as Mario Party mini-games or a carnival of writing challenges; along the same lines as a “Writer’s Block Breaker” thread, but less prompt-like inspiration, more challenge-like.

How this will work:

Anyone can post a challenge!*(see rule 1) Please see below for the types of challenges preferred. I will keep an index of challenges below, but each individual challenge post should also include an index of submissions. Please quote the challenge you are signing up for (if applicable) or submitting a fic for.

What types of challenges can I post?

Keep it small and relatively basic, but this really is the chance for those niche challenges that would otherwise might not see a ton of participants to be posted (though you can also make it broad). Or to allow people who might not want the full responsibility of hosting a challenge to get their feet wet in creating a challenge. If you are from the pre-move times, you might remember all the character and ‘ship threads we had, all hosting a challenge – this is your time to bring back your Ben Skywalker/Jysella Horn specific challenge. Force people to write poetry! Make it specific to a character, relationship, media, etc. But also remember, these are ‘mini-games’ so keep it basic and fun. If posting a “pick a number” challenge, please limit it to 5 entries.

But please try not to make it too boring (IE simple prompts). Think more complex than the drabble challenge, but not quite as in-depth as the dare challenge. Typical song or quote challenges are the area we are aiming for.


Rules

1. Everyone gets one ‘freebee’ challenge – meaning they do not need my approval to post. After this, you must PM me (Briannakin) for my approval on future challenges - this is mostly to prevent over-spamming of challenges that might be too simple or confusing – but we do want lots of variety in this thread.

2. Explain your challenge. It can be your personal inspiration for the challenge or an explanation of the music genre/long-lost ship/etc that is the basis of the challenge. It doesn’t have to be long, just let people know what they are getting into.

3. Do be offended if someone passes by your challenge – some things just don’t spark other’s muses

4. Sign up for as many challenges as you wish

5. You may combine challenges if that is what strikes your muse’s fancy, just make sure you quote all applicable challenges.

6. I wont keep this thread open for new challenges indefinitely, but story submissions can still be made.

Teenage Briannakin’s Late 2000s Emo/Punk-Rock Song Roulette!



Well… this is going to be embarrassing. I recently found my hot pink iPod Nano from ~2008. As you can expect, it’s filled with the most Emo, hardcore songs you can imagine. So I picked 5 of them (the classics) and made a roulette, so you can indulge any characters or fandom in some extreme angst, anarchy… or just the archetype of teenage cringe (including ridiculous bangs). Use the song to inspire you or use the title or lyrics however you may chose. Because some of these just don’t make sense (if in doubt, just write Vader).

OC/OC Challenge!



When I first began writing fanfic, I wasn’t much for romances, original characters, let alone original characters in relationships with original characters. Yet here I am, 10 years later, almost exclusively writing OC/OC. Funny how that works. Anyways, my muse is eternally grateful we have the more general MMM and OTP challenges which work for OC/OC writers as well as CC writers, but I wanted to take this opportunity to show some love, and challenge, OC/OC writers specifically.

I’m going to give you a (longer) prompt with a few variants (anyone can pick whatever they want, or you can have a number generator give you something at random). You must write a romantic fic with your OC/OC paring, BUT (1) ALL other characters must be CC and (2) you must write it in a way in which people unfamiliar with your OCs will understand what is going on.


Prompt:

On their way to a [romantic picnic, government dinner/ball, seminar, couples therapy] our romantic duo get waylaid by [a crashing vehicle, fowl weather, allergies, a fire nation attack (or equivalent)]. It’s alright, because one saves the other with [pure dumb luck, last minute shopping trip, mounted beast, a cooking utensil], but not before one of the two utters the phrase:
[-‘always the damsel in distress’
-‘what kind of demands are these?’
-‘Look at what I made!’
-‘I’ve never loved you more!”]

In the end, because our romantic duo gets to [cuddle, share an awkward kiss, pose for a incredible photo, drink to old times].

Okay, this is one that I came up with the other day when @Findswoman mentioned a list of tarot card related prompts:

The Idiot’s Array Sabacc Card Challenge!​

As well as being used for the game of the same name, sabacc cards could be used for divination and cartomancy. Besides the regular suit cards (staves, flasks, coins and sabers), there were eight “face cards” with figures or symbols on them. Each card had a specific meaning in such fortune telling.

Care to take a chance? Draw a card, find your fortune, write a story based on its meaning!

Classical Music Roulette Challenge.

Yes, you read that correctly.



My angst is so strong that metal isn't quite--well, metal enough to contain it. Only something like a Beethoven symphony will do for my soundtrack.

It's time to choose: you pick a number, and I give you a piece of European classical music to inspire your story. Since there are but five numbers, and five songs, I was limited in what variety I could provide, but I can at the least assure you they are not *all* by 19th century German composers.

Missing Scene Challenge

Write a vignette, short story, or longer featuring a missing scene from SW any era or continuity (Legends or NEU) that you wish had happened or think could have happened. It could be crucial to later events or smaller in the scheme of things but still have a ripple effect.
