@brodiew - Your Nursery rhyme is...

    One Moonshiny Night

    One
    moonshiny night
    As I sat high,
    Waiting for one
    To come by;
    The boughs did bend,
    My heart did ache
To see what hole the fox did make.

OK, I have been rediscovering things and saying that this or that is the best thing ever as if I were a toddler on sugar and not a dysthymic 38-year-old woman , but this thread looks like a gift that keeps on giving. I wish some of these things were still available. :(

Gonna search through and see if there is anything that actually IS available.

EDIT: @Mira_Jade, if I understood this well, runes are still available? Can I please have one, if so.

The Rune Challenge is all filled up, but as a welcome back present for your return to the boards, I did have one rune that didn't make the final cut. Not because it was any less awesome than the others, of course, but just because I had to wheedle my selection down to five. :p I would be more than happy to share it with you now, if you'd like. So, here we go with:

The rune Dæg, or Dagaz (ᛞ) represents the 'D' sound, and symbolizes the dawn and daylight. It is a rune that goes hand in hand with its sister rune Jera, as is evident in both of their infinitive shapes. Just as Jera represents the continuous cycle of the seasons, the symmetry of the Dagaz rune represents the balance in nature through the day cycle and the relationship between earth and sky. The X shape of the Gyfu rune also mirrors the Dagaz rune, but by showing the balance within mankind with both displaying and receiving positive emotions like generosity and love. The three runes together form a set that encompasses the endless symmetry between man and nature. Yet, where Jera and Gyfu symbolize the gentle forces of repetition and reciprocity, Dagaz has the powerful force of sudden change - like the dawn from the night - drawn into its shape. The rising and falling in the lines of the rune shows the course of the sun, from night to dark and back again. Your stanza from the Rune Poem is: "Day, the glorious light of the Creator; it is beloved of men, a source of hope and happiness to rich and poor, and of service to all."

    I hope that inspires you! :D [:D]

And, with that, your mods have decided that since this thread is coming up on its one year anniversary, we'd like to celebrate by getting the ball rolling on BRAND NEW Mini Games again. That's right! THE MINI-GAMES ARE NOW RE-OPENED!

If you submitted a challenge last year, consider this a fresh slate: you are now free to post a new challenge. We only ask that for you PM a mod first before posting any subsequent challenges, just to keep from congestion in the thread. (Please don't hesitate to do so, that said. We don't bite. ;)) Nothing has changed about the guidelines for posting challenges. The rules are still the same: keep your prompts small and relatively basic. Think more complex than the drabble challenge, but not quite as in-depth as the dare challenge. This really is the chance for those niche challenges that would otherwise might not see a ton of participants to be posted (though you can also make it broad). If you are posting a “pick a number” challenge, please limit it to 5 entries.

If you have any questions or concerns, as always, please feel free to contact any of your mods! The index has been updated with all of the 2020 challenges. If you don't see yours in the list, please let us know! You may also continue to write for your 2020 prompts and post your progress here, as well. There is no deadline for fic submissions. If there are any 2020 challenges with slots still open, you are still more than welcome to sign up for those prompts, too.

Alright, then! With that said, it is my honor to kick off these 2021 Mini-games with . . .

    The Latin Phrase Roulette!

Friends, authors, fellow fanfiction-ers, lend me your ears! This challenge is just what it says on the tin: pick a number, one through five, and I will give you a Latin phrase, its translation, and any brief notes that I may have on its origin and meaning. Latin, as you undoubtedly know, was the language originally spoken in the area around ancient Rome, known as Latium. Through the power of the Roman Republic, it became the dominant language in Italy, and subsequently throughout the western Roman Empire. Latin has since contributed many root words to the Romantic Languages, particularly in descriptions of theology, the sciences, medicine, and law. Latin was a language renowned for its capacity for word-play and rhetoric then, and it has continued to inspire authors down through the ages to our time. So! Step right up and see if this classical language can inspire your words today. [face_mischief]

    The Participants
    1. @Kit' | Gutta cavat lapidem (non vi sed saepe cadendo). Translation: a water drop hollows a stone (not by force, but by falling often). The main text of this phrase originated in Ovid's Epistulae ex Ponto, but was later expanded by an unknown source in the Middle Ages.

    2. @brodiew | Si vales valeo. Translation: if you are well, I am well. An abbreviation of si vales bene est ego valeo, a common opening for Roman letters. The practice fell out of fashion and into obscurity with the decline in Latin literacy.

    3. @Briannakin | De nobis fabula narratur. Translation: about us is the story told. In essence: their story is our story. Originally, this phrase referred to the end of Rome's dominance as a world power. Now, it's often used when comparing any current situation to a past story or event.

    4. @Ewok Poet | Vae, puto deus fio. Translation: ah, I think I am becoming a god. The last words of Vespasian, according to Suetonius in his Twelve Caesars.

    5. @ViariSkywalker | Vires acquirit eundo. Translation: she gathers strength as she goes. A quote from Virgil's Aeneid. The original context refers to Pheme, the Greek personification of fame and renown.

YES. Please. My muse is a delicate little bud rising up for spring, but I'm pretty sure it can handle some Latin (particularly in The West Wing verse)! Gimme number 3 please!

    1 please.

Let’s see if I can make my high school Latin teacher proud (because I never did in school. Stupid declensions)

We had a year of it in high school (picking subjects is not a thing here) and two years at the university and then history of Italian language for the next two years. When a language develops directly from Latin, you get to know how all those declensions literally faded into nothing. :p That might have felt right to you - you get to see all of it turn into a language with no cases.

And I am a native speaker of a language that has seven cases, as opposed to Latin's six, so...[face_rofl]

I could just never understand it at all. I was terrible at the language itself but very good at the culture and history parts. I did it for 3 years and averaged a B. I got C-‘s for translation and A+ for culture/history. Except once where I got an A+ for translation as we had to translate a passage, so I learnt it in English and also in Latin.

It has been useful teaching philosophy as I can translate the Latin terms that it uses quite easily (but that’s direct word translation not sentences) and once when I went to Rome and could read the inscriptions on the ruins.

I actually loved my Latin teacher. She was very sweet. Just very frustrated with a child who had (still has) no aptitude for languages. She looked to my teenaged eyes like she came from Ancient Rome too.

Wow! I think that has to be a record for an entire roulette being filled in such a short amount of time! That's fantastic. :D

    You got it! :D

    5. Vires acquirit eundo. Translation: she gathers strength as she goes. A quote from Virgil's Aeneid. The original context refers to Pheme, the Greek personification of fame and renown.

I can't wait to see what you do with this prompt. ;)

Honest to goodness, but I had a good chuckle when I saw post hoc, ergo propter hoc on the wiki page I gleaned these phrases from. :p Hopefully this will be just the thing for your muse!

    3. De nobis fabula narratur. Translation: about us is the story told. In essence: their story is our story. Originally, this phrase referred to the end of Rome's dominance as a world power. Now, it's often used when comparing any current situation to a past story or event.

I share your excitement! Here you go with . . .

    2. Si vales valeo. Translation: if you are well, I am well. An abbreviation of si vales bene est ego valeo, a common opening for Roman letters. The practice fell out of fashion and into obscurity with the decline in Latin literacy.

You got it! (And I LOVE that you and @Kit' have some familiarity with the language. That's awesome. :D)

    4. Vae, puto deus fio. Translation: ah, I think I am becoming a god. The last words of Vespasian, according to Suetonius in his Twelve Caesars.

[face_laugh] Oh, but I enjoyed your details of the tribulations and triumphs of high school Latin more than I can say. ;) Let's see what you can do with . . .

    1. Gutta cavat lapidem (non vi sed saepe cadendo). Translation: a water drop hollows a stone (not by force, but by falling often). The main text of this phrase originated in Ovid's Epistulae ex Ponto, but was later expanded by an unknown source in the Middle Ages.

And there you have it! So . . . who's going to step up with the next Mini-game challenge? [face_mischief] [face_dancing]

If you are familiar with languages that have cases and therefore have declensions, Latin is not hard until you encounter some pretty wild tenses. Passive is pretty wild, too. O_O

I believe that my special version of Jar Jar that romances the Death Star and then Zonama Sekot, and obliterates things out of sheer amusement a) is a deity; b) already used Latin in that story, as he did use a couple of other languages. Then again...this matches another idea that I have had on my list since the very first time I posted here. :D

The Mini-Games Challenges getting a revival to celebrate it's year anniversary. Awesome[face_dancing]

Shame I missed signing up for the Latin Challenge because it would've been a chance to finally use my Latin education from school:p

My own challenge will be a tribute to one of my favorite Shakespearean plays. Intrigued? Read on, my friends!

    Much Ado About Nothing Challenge:

Set in warm, sunny Messina, Much Ado About Nothing is the perfect play for springtime inspiration. There's a girl named Hero in it who fakes her own death (because it's Shakespeare and death had to be in there somewhere) but the real stars of this romantic comedy are the clashing bright wits of Beatrice and Benedick, who have endeared themselves to audiences for centuries.

To participate in this challenge, pick a number from one to five, and I will give you a quote from Much Ado About Nothing that might inspire a comedy, a romance, or something else entirely! As the numbers are claimed, I will update this post to reflect that. If all the numbers are taken, you can feel free to choose any quote that provides you with inspiration.

    The Quotes:

1.“Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more.
    Men were deceivers ever,
One foot in sea and one on shore,
To one thing constant never.”-Claimed by @earlybird-obi-wan
    2. "I had rather hear my dog bark a crow than a man swear he loves me."-Claimed by @RX_Sith
    3. "For a man is a giddy thing, and this is my conclusion."-Claimed by @Mira_Jade
    4. "In our last conflict, four of his five wits went halting off, and now is the whole man governed with one."-Claimed by @WarmNyota_SweetAyesha
    5. "Suffer love! A good epithet! I do suffer love indeed for I love thee against my will."-Claimed by @ViariSkywalker
