JCC [Mother Nature's Wrath]Tornados in OKC

News outlets speculating should be ignored. Deal in facts.

 

I wasn't aware the tornado categories had been changed, but that might be because I live in a country that never gets them.
When did that happen?

And what is a 'typical' tornado size/strength?

 

Julie won't be satisfied until a tornado picks up a busload full of schoolkids and pregnant women, then slams it into the ground, erupting in a huge fireball, but none of the kids die on impact, just burn alive instead.

Yeah Julie we really needed the pictures. I don't think anyone of us would have been able to grasp the scale without them.

 

They adjusted the Fujita scale to the Enhanced Fujita scale a few years ago. This one was an EF-4 according to the National Weather Service right now. A more typical strength is EF 1-2, though there are strong storms every year as well.

I am from Kansas City, Missouri, have family in Joplin, and am used to having dozens of nearby tornadoes a year. I can tell you, for a tornado to hit a large metro area is pretty rare because the heat given off by a city (the people, the asphalt) actually makes it unlikely for a touchdown in the storm to occur.

Also because of the way pressure systems and storms work, most tornadoes touch down in the evening. I've never seen a school hit like this while people were actually in it because of this. Normally they hit at night when people are home. This is also the reason I've been near a lot of tornadoes but never actually seen one. Often it's too dark to see them.

The school looks awful. They said some kids were removed to a nearby church before the storm hit but not all of them. It kind of seems like the school didn't have a basement, which all the schools I ever went to had. Yikes.

Was this tornado the biggest one since that monster one to hit OKC in 1999?

 

Not sure, but it's pretty big and apparently two more have hit the general OKC area.
