    >No other sources have the Y-wings around that long, and the Essential Guide to Planets & Moons says that one of the first uses of the Y-wing was at the Battle of Vnas, which was set in the early Rebellion era.<

The Planets and Moons guide is mistaken in this case, because COTJ had already established that Y-Wings had been around in 18 BBY (COTJ was published *before* EGTPA.) The Essential Guide to Vehicles and Vessels was also released *after* COTJ, but it doesn't say exactly when the Y-Wings came into use. So it's hardly Hambly's fault. Either the Battle of Vnas took place in the early years of the Empire, when the Y-Wing was still new, and it was used by an early incarnation of the Rebel Alliance (pre-Corellian Treaty) or the "new" Y-Wings used in the battle were one of the many, many variations we've seen over the years.

whats wrong with TIEs and Skiprays 18 BBY? The Skipray is an older craft, going back before the Clone Wars. There were numerous variants of the Skipray class (an established EU fact), and while the GAT-12h, etc., may not have gone back that far, its quite plausible the ships in COTJ are an older model, such as a GAT-12b.

As for TIEs, the TIE was in development during the CW and Karen's stories show that as of 19/18 BBY Vader's ad x1 was in the works. The TIE fighter is quite old. The ones in COTJ were probably the original TIE, rather than the TIE/ln of the movie. This craft is also well-established in the movies.

The EU has established that most classic era craft, inc Lambdas and ISDs, were released within a year of ROTS.

The story "Mist Encounter" shows the "new" TIEs being deployed a week after ROTS.

Digging a little back for this, since I just found something relevant . . .

I don't think we need to worry too much about this homing device. Despite Tarkin's quote, it seems it's related to another time the Falcon was attempting to avoid being followed: the Empire Strikes Back. Apparently, that one is a piece of junk ejected from the Avenger:

I was recently re-reading Zorba the Hutt's Revenge (don't ask) and came across the following awesome exchange between Luke and Ken:

[blockquote]"I guess you've never heard of the Droidfest of Tatooine," Luke said. "That's the palce to go. It's loaded with JDTs."

"What does JDT mean?" the boy inquired.

"Jawa Droid Traders," Luke explained. "The Droidfest is the Jawas' annual sale. They have the biggest selection of droids in the galaxy." [/blockquote]

Why oh why didn't I run across passage this back when I was still writing the NEGTD?

Woulda been perfect for a mention in the that crazy Jawa monster droid entry... :(

Despite its childish sillyness and the overall sense of "What the kriff is this?", the GoDV saga does have some genuinely interesting additions to the EU. The Davids definitely did their homework, since there are a bunch of WEG references sprinkled throughout the series, and I think the imbedded art makes the story approach bearable levels of camp. Reread them, Dan. Reread them, and use their power to your advantage.

    Oh yeah, and there's an [link=http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v332/Rogue_Follower/8t88.jpg]8t88 cameo[/link] on Kessel. ;) :p

Cheer up, Dan. I referenced the Droidfest when I wrote [link=http://www.starwars.com/databank/droid/3b6ra7/]this databank entry[/link], so all is not lost. :D

As mentioned, the Skipray Blastboat was almost certaintly used durimg the beginnimgs of the Empire, we already have the G,H,J,K,I...etc variants; why not A,B.C....etc. The T.I.E. fighter started to see service only days after the declaration of the Empire, a few years after the T.I.E fighter came the TIE Model and than around 10-11 BBY came the well know Tie/Ln model. As for the Y-wings, as is said they are considered old and nearly obsolete as front-line fighter by the time of the Battle of Yavin, being relegated to Bomber missions; which they are much better suited to.

The Empire is stated to after the Clone Wars to get rid of the mechanical soldier concept for awhile and go with regular troops, how does this flow with stuff fro WEG like the ZQ Model Infantry droid which has Two different blasters along with hardpoints for 4 more weapon systems. It is stated that this was used during the early days of the empire...."more likely years", but it is "supposedly no longer in service", due possibly to public out-cry of batlle-droid use, it would be to soon after the horrors of the clone war to just go back to droids. Altoihg we do see in the New Guide the use of Dwarf spider droids in garrionsing seperatist worlds and storm-trooper training.

Heck, Skiprays were even used during the PT-era, since some can be seen in the Living Force Campaign Guide, IIRC.

The Last of the Jedi series discusses the Empire's "latest battle droid model"; which could be referring to the ZQ...

SBD, sadly, I am so slow it took me a while to realize you meant that NEGD, and not GODV, was an awesome book. For a while you had me quite stunned.

    Hehe

Why does C-3PO's entry have AAT in aurebesh at the bottom of his page? I take it that's an error since he's not an Armored Assault Tank? [face_laugh]:p

in Marvel 47: Droid World, Z-X3 has a guard who looks a bit like a protocol droid, with a blaster on his chest

is this a BL Battle Legionnaire?

Unlock 'n bump! (man, has it been 3 years?)

While biding my time until I can pick up a copy of the Atlas, I decided to catch up on the my backlog of Essential Guides to satisfy my cravings. So I finsihed up the NEGTD and am currently reading JVS:EGTTF. I had read almost half of the Droids guide when it first came out but got sidelined by other things, so I basically picked up with Class 3 droids and beyond.

I really enjoyed how Dan worked in some narrative elements into each entry, so you had things like Vuffi/Great Heap or L8-L9/ZX/Darktrooper complementing each other and telling a story.

The Abominor/Silentium stuff was really interesting, especially given it's debut here (combined with KOTOR's Rakata and DNT's (ok, technically ISWU) Killiks/Celestials) was a real kick-off for the really ancient history of the GFFA that we're seeing be explored in much more detail these days.

I loved some of the smaller connections like the 8D8/Muuns, Qella/Lando/YVH and Falcon/homing droid bits.

I also got a kick out of the setup of the buzzdroids overstock with the Colicoids. Was this reference an intentional setup for the Millennium Falcon novel (I guess it could have been in the early stages when NEGTD was written) or did Luceno just reference it from here?

Ya know, I enjoy adventure and exploration outings on rare occassionally (though nothing quite as exotic has been attempted yet), and I'm by no means claustrophobic, but, damn dude. I usually gotta draw the line at potentially getting my skull wedged and stuck into the planet. ;)

    <img src="http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g13/tanuki-kage/Emoticons/spittake.gif">

So, given that the Atlas, according to Jason's piece on sw.com, wasn't gievn the greenlight till fall of '06, and it's preceeding concept existing a year earlier, I gotta wonder just how loud Dan's brain was shouting "NO!! Don't say anything!" to his typing hands at the time this post was was made. ;)

I need to get my hands on this book! Since it's been a while since the book came out, it would be nice if this could become an ongoing work with updates online, similar to what is being done with the atlas on the official site.
