I just got an email back from the Projection Manager at the Henry Ford IMAX with the following sad news:

"...Unfortunately, IMAX theatres nationwide will not see Star Wars 3 this time around. The film is not going to being converted for IMAX.

After much negotiation, IMAX Corporation unfortunately was unable to reach a mutually-satisfying agreement with 20th Century Fox and LucasFilm to convert Star Wars 3 into the IMAX film format.

I know this is very disappointing news. Believe me, we would love to have seen Star Wars 3 in IMAX Theatres.

In place of Star Wars 3, IMAX Corporation will be offering both "Batman Begins" and "Charlie & The Chocolate Factory" this Summer to IMAX Theatres nationwide..."

I had contacted him about our groups getting to costume there for Episode 3. What a bummer. :(

You know, I'm kinda not surpised that ROTS isn't going to be in IMAX format.

How could you possibly cut that down to two hours? Man, I wouldn't want to see anything cut out of it just so it could be on an IMAX screen.

It's a bummer but I can live with it.

They might not have cut it up. They didn't cut a thing out of Harry Potter last summer, at least not the version that we got at the St. Louis Science Center. And HP was 2.5 hours long.

I saw episode 2 at the imax and it really wasn't that much better than at the regular theater. I'm not upset at all that it won't be there. You guys were talking about cutting the film down to 2 hours, how long is the movie any way?

From what I understand, they wouldn't have edited the movie's length this time around. I am bummed that it won't be at Henry Ford. We had a great time at the AOTC events.

Personally, the one thing I really didn't like about seeing AOTC on IMAX was the format. I like my movies in the letterbox format. :)

I'll have to find the link to the thread or the TFN article, but they're actually planning on showing all six movies at some point in 3-D now that the technology exists to convert even old movies to it.

The only place that can really show 3-D movies and are already in place around the country are IMAXes...unless they have a way to do it for regular theaters.

I think they had a discussion about it in The Phantome Menace forum of the JC. ;)
