Figured with Elden Ring out it was time to do a thread for these guys. Been playing their latest since yesterday, and so far, it's been pretty good.

How would you compare its difficulty to their previous works?

I’ll probably wait a few months before jumping into Elden Ring, I need strategy guides/videos to get through these games. Sekiro was a masterpiece imo, definitely in my top-10 all time favorites.

When (if) it comes to Gamepass I'll play it. Otherwise I have no interest in games where I can't control the difficulty in single player mode or where being beaten consistently is "half the fun"

Games where the requirement is just "git gud" are not fun

This is a shame as the game looks amazing but I know I'll not enjoy it after about 15mins just Like I was with Bloodbourne

Never played Sekiro, so, I'm not sure how it compares to that. I'd say the biggest difference between this and the souls games so far is that the open world approach makes it harder to tell whether you're in the area that you're supposed to be.

O Death is a good song for From Software, but I have to say Supermassive Games has an absolute obsession with that song. It's in Until Dawn and so I think they then felt duty bound to put, not one, but two versions of it in every Dark Pictures Anthology game. It's . . . a truly awful creative choice.

Elden Ring has been fantastic so far. I find it easier and more accessible than Demon's Souls or Dark Souls; I never played either Bloodbourne or Sekiro, so can't comment on the difficulty there.

Are you being killed very, very quickly? There's your answer.

Alternatively, get good or get out. Which is apparently far more an option in ER than say the corridors of Bloodborne.

I've heard ER summarised as both easier than their other games but still hard. Both can be true.

So much so that they’re actually naming a future game after it.

Piece of advice for the early game: make sure to spend time leveling up your gear and character before heading to the castle to the north. Because the first boss in that area is absolutely vicious.

Yeah, it's gonna be a game called O Death with the song O Death under the main titles and a second version of the song O Death under the end credits. The only way this would be acceptable is if that particular entry is a comedy-horror. Like if Dark Pictures did a game basically spoofing all the ways the Dark Picture games are silly, that would be great. But I have the uncomfortable feeling that they're deadly serious about having the game "O Death" feature both "O Death" and "O Death" on the soundtrack and that is truly stupid.

So, I started Elden Ring about three weeks ago on the PS5, and it's probably the best game I've played in a very long time. It's my first Soulsborne experience kind of. I have played a bit of OG Demons Souls and a bit of Dark Souls, so I knew what to expect going in. It's a bit more forgiving than previous titles, mainly thanks to the open world setting and more forgiving checkpoints.

With that being said, it's not without its flaws. Enemy AI, especially boss AI, can be a bit too intelligent, especially if you're trying to consume any kind of potion, you'll get smacked down sometimes. Also, the action delay is extremely frustrating. You input an action to roll or to dodge but you need to take a potion first, the game has to go through those actions before the latter one. I've been told From Software games do this to "add to the challenge". Oh **** off, all it does is break immersion. Also, there are side quests in this game. Many side quests. Good luck trying to find them, start them, continue them, and complete them without some sort of guide. Yes, I'm aware all the other Soulsborne games do this.

With that being said, I highly recommend this to anyone and everyone. It's surreal, but I know of several friends who are playing it at the same time that I am, and I actually got a friend to get it (he loved the original Dark Souls so it wasn't hard). I'm not sure if I'll finish it, but man it's really engaging and overwhelming on how much there is to explore.

So you should play it @solojones. It's better than Breath of the Wild.

This was a deeply satisfying gaming experience for me. Despite how frustrating some of the bosses could be, nothing beats the euphoria of finally conquering a boss that’s been kicking my ass a dozen or more times (I’m looking at you, Melania and Radahn!).

I beat the game at the end of April, and after a short break to play some of my other games that need my attention, I’ll play it again to achieve the other two endings.

I chose Vagabond, which was probably a mistake since my starting gear was too heavy for me until I leveled up my Endurance a bit.

Confessor. Think I might do either vagabond or samurai for my next playthrough.

Samurai sounds like a really fun class, but I’m also curious about prisoner. Like, why would that even be a class? Lol

I’ve heard Samurai/Golden Seed is the way to go for a first playthrough, which I finally intend to get to once I finish Judgment.

It’ll be only my second Soulsborne game, Bloodborne being the only other one I’ve played for an extended period of time.

What was everyone’s weapon of choice? I nearly always go with Dexterity builds in the Souls franchise, so I went with the Bloodhound Fang for most of the game. The bleed effect was incredibly useful in a lot of the boss fights.

Need a staff for my glintstone spells, but for melee I use the Wolverine claws—they haven’t let me down yet

Mainly stuck with a shield/broadsword set up, though I switched to the Moonlight Greatsword after completing Ranni's questline and used a katana equipped with bloodhound's step to deal with Malenia.
