    ROTS Obi beard... [face_love]

Well, I can't stay long today. My teachers decided to drown me in homework, so I should probably go and do that... *sigh* If only I could write a report about Obi-Wan... [face_batting]

As far as I can tell the code for posting images is:

[image = URL] without the spaces.

However, I gather that posting of too many pics on the forum is frowned upon because it's really slows down how the page loads, especially for people on dialup. Best to just post links.

And I really do think I like ROTS Obi-Wan best, though ANH Obi-Wan is a close second, just because he's the first.

But now I have a dead Obi-Wan question and I haven't seen an answer for it on the Luke thread. I've always assumed that the only times Luke saw Obi-Wan were in the movies. But now that I think about it, Obi-wan likely gave Luke a little verbal nudges between ANH and TESB on his Jedi training. Luke doesn't seem to question at all Obi-Wan's directive he got to go to Dagobah, which makes sense if he's been hearing from Obi-Wan all along.

I suppose Obi-Wan talking to Luke between ANH and TESP is one of those unwritten things just like Qui-Gon was talking to Obi-Wan between ROTS and ANH.

"Hairy2" - =P~ Time to make a new Star Wars collage for my desktop now that I have a new center pic... [face_love]

Like you, I've always assumed that the last time Luke saw Obi-Wan before ESB was when Vader cut him down. You have an interesting point about Obi-Wan coming to Luke between movies though. However, I still prefer to think that Luke didn't see ghost Obi-Wan until ESB. I don't know why. Maybe I dislike change? ;)

    It's been a while since I watched ESB so I may be wrong, but I remember Luke sounding surprised when Ben appeared to him on Hoth. He said, "Ben?" And that may have been because he thought he was going to die and that there was no hope left. Or maybe Obi-Wan 'spoke' between movies to Luke as he did during the Battle of Yavin but didn't actually appear until Hoth. Hmm. [face_thinking] Maybe you're right and I should stop straining my brain. 8-}

    It's Friday; I shouldn't be thinking this hard. [face_tired] :p

Yes, I'm inclined to think that Ben didn't appear as an image until Luke saw him on Hoth. I think that was new. But after ANH, when Luke is looking at his lightsaber and wondering, 'What do I do with it now?' I think that Ben's voice might come to him.

Now, I don't think Obi-Wan's voice was kicking Luke out of bed in the morning, getting him to do his Jedi exercises, but every now and then, he might hear that voice, giving him direction. However, Luke wouldn't have been able to sit down and have a conversation with the voice; I don't think that came until he did it with ghosty-Obi-Wan in ROTJ. Obi-Wan would have only come rarely and I don't think Luke could have called him.

I like to think that Obi-Wan was hanging around with a hint every now and then even after ROTJ.

I think some of the books have ghost obi talking to Luke after ROTJ. Although I haven't read them so can't be sure, but I think I heard it mentioned. Might be a question for the Beyond folks.

    And as a one off...

Ah, what lovely images to delurk to! Who can resist that face :D

I'm actually at the stage of bashing out a bunny of obi as a Force Ghost with obi_webb] and we've both been pondering a lot about the force nudges he might give Luke through the prequel- so its interesting (and encouraging!) to see people agreeing with the force nudging theory, with some wonderful reasoning behind why he should be force nudging! I liked the point about thats why Luke wasn't fazed at Ben's directive to go to Dagobah in ESB!

In fact, we're in a sticky little place of not wanting to portray Ben as too manipulative with his nudges. My thoughts are that age, the not so recent turns his life had taken and Qui-Gon's ghosts influence would probably help to shape him as a less rule abiding character which might explain/justify this and his 'certain point of view' philosophy. Any thoughts, anyone?

The change in his outlook on rules is a sticky one. I could see him becoming more strict with the rules. After all, he loved Anakin and ignored Ani's "friendship" with Padme because it made Ani happy (both things that were against the Jedi code). And what good did that do but breed disaster? On the other hand, Qui-Gon's perception that love would conquer the Sith in the end could also lead Obi-Wan to let go of the rules of the Jedi and think more compassionately about himself, his Padawan and his own choices.

I'm sure he went through a very rough time during the little Luke years coming to terms with loss and his own part in it. For me, I think that the certain POV was his own way of lying to himself - he knew that Luke couldn't handle such news for a while after Ep 4 - but his honor should have dictated that he tell the truth. I still see his hesitation in Ep. 4 as forcing himself to lie for Luke's sake. Then in Ep 6 with the certain POV scene, he was trying to cover up his dishonor with more manipulation of the truth. It would have been better for him to just say that he was protecting Luke when he lied about Anakin. I certainly would have accepted it better. In fact, until the PT, I was pretty mad about it....

I've always thought that Ben's POV argument in ROTJ was pretty lame. OTOH, the POV argument sounds weirdly similar to Qui-Gon's 'Your focus determines your reality.'

I think that Obi-Wan and Yoda had decided ahead of time that finding out about his father was to be Luke's Jedi Trials. That was strongly hinted at in Luke's visionary confrontation with Vader on Dagobah. In the end, Yoda did tell Luke that he had to confront Vader to be a Jedi. But I don't think Yoda thought Luke could defeat the Sith by then, especially after Luke had blown up all their plans for him. I suppose they thought that once he'd gone through the program, he'd be the one who could take out Palpatine. As honorable as Obi-Wan was, he was still a very conventional Jedi, a bit more like Yoda than Qui-Gon.

Of course, our dear Luke completely screwed up their careful plans for him when he rushed off to Bespin and got the news firsthand. And poor Obi-Wan sounded quite despondent when Luke told him he couldn't kill his own father. I guess he hoped that Luke could still salvage the mess, but he seemed to accept that Luke was going to do what he was going to do. And that's to Obi-Wan's credit. He was trying to train Luke to take out the Sith the old-fashioned Jedi way, but when it didn't work out, he let it go gracefully.
