The conservative base hates liberals, so they don't mind the fact that they're getting screwed by Republican elites. But the only reason they hate liberals in the first place is because those elites told them to hate liberals.

They call their opponents antisemitic while embracing baseless conspiracy theories targeting Soros.
They promote Islamophobic ideas while strengthening US ties with Saudi Arabia.

I think a lot of the hate for liberals on the right is entirely organic, and a lot of people voted for Trump not just to piss off media and Democrats, but GOP elites as well.

We want equality and fewer guns, so people hate us -- that's the theory?

The problem is, most people know that liberal elites are lying about the equality part.

Good point. Donald Trump clashes and fights with Democrats. But Donald Trump decimated the GOP in 2016. Trump knocked down the Republican establishment and remade the Republican Party into the Trump Party.

In the 2016 primaries, the establishment candidates following traditional GOP talking points and demeanor were powerless against Trump's insults, lack of decorum, and irreverence for tradition / established power structure. Republican voters loved Trump for it. And the Republican's who are powerful now are the ones that changed direction and went all in with Donald Trump.

We hear Trump compared to the ruler in "The Emperor's New Clothes". But in 2016 for Republicans Trump was like the kid in that story, the one who stated the obvious out loud. Trump was the candidate who called the GOP on it's BS.

This is spot on, and I think it's also his biggest weakness this time around. It's much harder for him to present anti-establishment energy because now he is the de-facto establishment. Having media as his antagonist helps a bit, but it's no substitute for the rogue's gallery he knocked out in 2016. I think a similar problem happened for Bernie as well this time, people perceived him as being part of the establishment.

There are a lot of Americans who are down for a "chaos vote", always have been. Maybe I'm permanently scarred from 2004 CA Gubernatorial recall where the voter guide was like a tabloids' classified section, but I believe there a lot more cranks in the electorate than pundits like to admit and they can be decisive in elections. This election feels a lot less . . . fun, than 2016 though. So maybe they'll stay home, idk.

Lol, idk man, I don't really know anything about you. You talk about how your family is connected with Democrat politics so I'm not sure what to believe. I really can't understand how any educated person sincerely committed to more equitable healthcare outcomes could have supported Warren over Bernie. The whole narrative about Bernie and progressive politicians not being able to get things done, seems like a self-fulfilling prophecy to me. It's more about preserving the party's power than affecting change.

I think Bob made it clear. They hate PC culture, they hate having their speech corrected, they hate not being able to get away with casual bigotry, they hate that things are changing away from what they once knew.

This anger is genuine and organic. Fox News didn’t invent it.

It is surely a good question, what is the combination of aspects that led to Trump. I think it is fair to say that mainstream media played indeed a role. Then, the extent of their relevance is open to debate.
It's a complex topic for sure.

What's been interesting to me, was seeing how media convinced themselves that they were responsible for Trump, and how they adjusted. It was a weird situation, where they concluded that all the out-sized coverage they gave him in 2016 was a problem, but their solution was to give him even more coverage once he was in office. They believe that the problem was purely editorial, and they've fixed it. At some point we got to Trumpian Realism, the idea that all aspects of public life are being refracted through his prism. Now we believe he's an avatar for his followers. Has any other president been held in such high esteem?

I'm not convinced they actually did at all, though they might have convinced themselves otherwise.

So, has anyone followed the whole Lindsey Graham tax release blow up?

Essentially, he decided that the issue to dig in on was that his opponent hadn't released his taxes yet.

Yeah, that went about as well as expected when his opponent then released them:

So now of course, Lindsey was asked about Trump's taxes:

Asked if Trump should release his tax returns, Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina told CNN on Thursday, "Yeah, I think everybody should. I've said that for a long time."

I'm quite sure Trump won't try and punish Lindsey for that. Right?

Lol, yeah. They have made some formatting changes, they don't broadcast him live anymore, and have replaced coverage of his stunts with coverage of anonymous court gossip, but for the most part they still don't actually look at how power structures have or haven't changed over the last four years.

It sounds to me like they're still just looking at the ratings. "Live coverage of them rallies doesn't get the huge ratings it used to? Toss it out, find something that will!"
Everyone on the major media is obsessed with driving ratings/subscriptions up, because they're in it for the profit.

Yeah, but then the entire establishment went on to endorse Trump, and Trump gave them everything they wanted.

I still don't think I'd agree with that, at least not entirely. Yes, there are people who are casually bigoted, but those sentiments could have been overcome, and they could have been gradually persuaded to move away from that were it not for conservative rejectionists leading them in the opposite direction.

I think they realized pretty quickly that they could still get big Trump ratings without letting him write the script. In the aftermath of 2016 they viewed him as the talent which was getting out of control, like an actor going off script. He was an actor after all, working for the same NY media folks who were now in charge of covering him as a news story. The problem was that they needed to replace his narratives with something equally sensational to keep the ratings, and elected for impeachment/Russiagate, which I believe they knew was never going to ever become as big a story as they pretended it would, but they didn't care because it was a ratings cash cow, and they assumed that any other controversy could replace it. They couldn't predict COVID would be that story, but Trump's complete incompetence in handling all crises was a given.

I think it's very significant that impeachment ended up being a defensive move to protect Biden and preserve Democrat leadership's credibility, rather than an offensive move to take down Trump.

On the whole "GOP elites" discussion: Ehhhh?

Perhaps there was some particular resentment against the Bush family, I guess? But by and large, Trump wasn't some singular figure. People see Tucker Carlson as a successor because his forerunners were Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, and other bigoted, stupid conservative media personalities. The pretend outrage against "elites" that is mostly centered on not being loyal enough to their already extreme ideologies is a well-established niche in that environment. None of them are actually that separate from the people they supposedly critique.

People worship guns for dumb reasons. I'll return to the subject momentarily.

But I'm beyond outraged by Trump's desire to implement a patriotic education. He is not only trying to prevent knowledge of slavery. We need to know about the heroic abolitionists who opposed slavery. That was one of the things I wanted to read about in Encarta back in the day. Trump's speech reeks with prejudice against non-heterosexual people. Basically, he's implicitly targeting LGBTQ people while explicitly targeting ethnic minorities. I mean, he talks about a nuclear family. Ugh. Not everyone wants a nuclear family. Honestly, some people want to be poly. But that's not just it. Many of these conservative people should not be parents. Honestly, I could tell you about six horrible Baptists in Texas. The way these couples treated their cis daughters! It would shock you. The first set had three kids. The father cared more about sex and he ignored his son and daughter.. He did nothing to defend his youngest daughter from being bullied by her mom. Her mom called her little girl ugly, and the tenth grade daughter cut herself on her left arm. She later became one of those Hooters girls who refused to resign after Aubrey Madden's death. Honestly, I feel very sorry for her, despite her lack of resignation. She's been abused by so many men in her life. She gave up on love when she pursued a gay guy and he wasn't into her. But she refuses to have kids because she's scared of turning into her mom. The irony is that she's actually quite well-mannered and is a good artist. But she's so depressed. She's happiest when she's away from people on her bicycle. I don't blame her. I would be misanthropic, too. The other two cis ladies had some horrible parents, too. The second set...oh, goodness. The mother moved to New Hampshire after her daughter was born. The father abused his daughter....horribly. She's been an escort. I met her because she is a cis girl with my deadname. I felt sorry for her because she had clay-media or however you spell it. I watched all these men, and two girls, trying to exploit her, and she had to take illegal zanies, addies, and coke just to function. I met her when she was only doing weed, and she was okay then. But her friends and neighbors treated her horribly. I couldn't save her. I could only listen to her for three months and then I left because it was too much. That's when I was assaulted. I told her boyfriend that she deserved to be a psychology professor and not his victim. So, yeah. If any of you have seen my broken nose photo from 2016, that's what happened. I wanted to spit on her father's music store windows. I felt so sorry for this kid. She was 9 years younger than me. She's still alive, but it' so sad. The third set was the least bad. The father worshiped sex, and the mom ignored the eldest of the three daughters. The daughter was abused by 100 people in a large high school in a certain county that was neither Dallas nor Tarrant. Then she was abused by two boys at a contruction site when she was in the tenth grade. (All of these girls went through something bad in the tenth grade. I can relate. That was my time I was raped back in 2003.) So, then her mom sent her to a rehab. She ran away. She survived human trafficking. Anyhow, I shared her New Age music on this site back in 2016 and 2017. I feel so bad for her. She's well-spoken. She's a great lyricist. I didn't believe any of her claims of having New Age magical powers. I just felt bad for her. I knew I couldn't save her anymore than I could save the others.

But, yeah. I tend to respect women (good, bad, or morally ambiguous) who don't love themselves and hope they will terrify men and get them away from me. But I've learned not ask people to do that. But that's the point. I'm sure the hetero people on this site are good people. But I just gave you a taste of horrible parents that forced their daughters to be straight when they all told me they identified as pan. That goes to show you how vicious biphobia and panphobia are! Those girls should have been rescued as infants. They deserved better parents. And Trump wants parents to abuse their kids and force them to be messed up. That's why I hate him! I know he's primarily racist and transphobic in his policies. But look at how he treats people. Would you trust Trump with any of those girls (born in 1991, 1992, and 1995)? I never would. Trump does hurt many women. But he hurts anyone, regardless of gender. Domestic abusers and child abusers have been inspired to get away with these crimes even more during his presidency. I just gave you a depressing, awful taste of North Texas. But that shows you why I resent trump. I have sympathy for that bicycle lady and those two musicians. Their parents are just as vile as the president. Our kids deserve a better president than this monster!

There is a woman in Maine who has been putting dog feces through the letter boxes of Trump supporters.

Is this taking political debate too far?

Yes. There are still some who could never quite stomach it and didn't go along with Trump. And those who were kicked out. But the party leaders who weren't forced out pr bailed on their own, the ones who were left followed their voting base and got in line with the new message. And some of the old power structure undoubtedly is still in place, switching their patronage to team Trump.

But what happens next? Now that that republican party has turned into a cult of personality where do they go? What are Republicans post Trump? They are in for a crisis of identity at least.
