Yeah, it is. You can see him in a couple of other shots as well. I think it's funny they never show his face, but I'm sure they're still working on it.

 

Yes it is Tudyk, he's supposed to be a Clone Wars era battle droid or so a source told me quite a while ago.

I think the Tudyk robot is Jyn's sidekick. Rogue One's version of Chewie and Han.

 

I'm starting to think that Jyn is the one that makes the droid.

I've got a feeling that the sand stuff is from the beginning of the movie, and her saving Deigo's character is how she is introduced to the Rebel world. Tudyk is right behind her in those scenes too, so I'm guessing she brings him along for the ride.

Yep, definite Han/Chewie vibe with Jyn and the bot.

 

The droid is an Imperial battle droid reprogrammed to fight for the Rebels according to MSW. Looking at it I would say that looks spot on to me.

looks cheaper and more of a put-together sort of droid. so i wouldnt be surprised in the slightest if it was something LIKE the super battle droid (which i thought were pretty cool back in the PT days). im not sure about the buddy vibes that some likening to Han/Chewy. from what we've seen they havent even looked/talked to each other. i understand thats an easy assessment to make though. keen on seeing the head of the droid. i think the actor will nail it and give it some personality, regardless if thats likeable/unlikeable, hopefully

How funny wouldn't it be if this was taking place post-ROTJ and he was reprogrammed to fight for the Resistance instead. Totally getting the Terminator-vibe here.

 

Love it. A new design that somehow fits seamlessly into the OT universe.

And it's million times better design than the super battle droid design, even though there are some similarities. I wonder if Chiang designed him.

I agree. The pictures do look more like k2s0, which is more in keeping with Droid names. There is obviously a lot of "not final" to what we saw, so maybe they got the name wrong.

 

I think the "5's" are just really curvy in the schematics.

I don't know, combining two existing designs into one new one might be a step too far for his imagination.

 

Its par for the course that we have a droid sidekick. But its a nice twist on it that its an Imperial droid.

 

It strikes me as being an amalgam of five or six droid designs. And IMO, Chiang is the best conceptual designer on the current team. One of the few who understands why McQuarrie's style is so perfect for this universe, while still charting his own course. And one of the few that understands the importance of form over detail in a design.

 

That's not what 'they' say....you do know why he was not invited to work on ROTS don't you?
