I'm not sure if this is being discussed in the DVD changes thread, so I started a new topic. According to various sources, the entire Star Wars Saga will be released on HD DVD sometime in 2007 or 2008. It has also been said that GL will still be tinkering with both the OT and PT for that release, and actually may be doing that now as he finishes ROTS. Assuming that he does make some changes, which I'm sure he will, what do you think would be good, taking into account the fact that he will probably do it in order to make the saga fit together.

When you look at the series in order, you may find that a certain episode needs a little something. This can also include undoing changes from the SE or DVD release. I would however ask that the OT purists please not respond unless they have a change/addition idea. This is only because of the many "flame wars" I have seen between purists and non-purists.

Personally, I think ROTJ could use something (i dont know what) to make the climax more tense, just because otherwise, ROTS will likely make it look pretty dull. Should ROTS get a PG-13 rating, perhaps changes to ROTJ should include scarier, more intense, apocalyptic or even violent circumstances that would match the PG-13 rating. Another thing that would be nice is for the Death Star in ANH to have escorts like 2 Star Destroyers or something. Basically, I think it needs additions more than changes. Kind of like how there is the Extended Edition of each of the LOTR movies.

Ousley edit: making this the official thread to encompass all future changes to the CT

TLJ Edit: Locking for a fresh start in version 2

Are there any links to this information, there are so many rumors about DVDs, that it is really hard to tell. I don't really believe it till the Official site says something about them.

    Thanks for the information,

This is not a change to the movies per se, but I would really, and I've said this before in another post, like a larger amount of bonus material. Just look at what they did with the Aliens Quadrilogy Box Set (still the best DVD set out there) and the Matrix Box. That's 9 & 10 DVD's and what do we get for star wars .. 4 discs. There is so much they could do... for instance seperate commentary tracks for Director/Production, Sound design/Visual effects & finally a track for actors/actresses. With commentarys like that you could hear the commentary you like. For example you could hear Ian and Mark talk about the scene's on the second death star instead of hearing about sound design or you could hear sound design commentaries if you prefer that.

Other things to include in the bonus material could be "The myth & movies" behind star wars were they could talk about what mythological aspects and what movies inspired star wars and there could be interviews with the actors about being a part of the star wars legend.

Concerning the movies they are close to perfect, but they still could have Temuera Morrison dub all the Stormtrooper voices to illustrate the clone background and I would like the Lightsaber effects to be more like in the PT. By that I mean ALL lightsaber effects including Luke's lightsaber when he gets his saber from Kenobi and when he is practicing aboard the Millenium Falcon and the Lightsaber fight between Vader and Kenobi.

    That's what I would like.

The Ewoks in ROTJ really takes away the greatness of this movie. They should have digital creatures pasted over all the Ewoks, give them a new look.

On ANH they digital pasted Jabba over a fat human guy that Harrison Ford was talking too.Why not do the same for the Ewoks in ROTJ.

Also on TPM,they should re-edit Jar Jar's dialogue,to make him not look so stupid.Because he takes away the greatness to that film.

Funny enough, I was in a discussion about future changes in an IRC channel earlier today.

One of my suggestions was that in ESB, Vader gets a make over by queer eye by the straight guy, who gives him a pink lightsaber and shaves his eyebrows.

Now, on the serious side... It'd be nice to have some of the early documentaries (Making of Star Wars, SFX of ESB, Classic Creatures, From Star Wars to Jedi). I'd like to see the "I am your father"-scene with the original recorded audio (Dave Prowse saying that Obi-Wan killed Luke's father). Left out special effects shots would also be nice, so would be the option to view certain scenes filmed on blue screen (without background matted in).

Big difference. Jabba was one character who was MENT to be replaced by a stop motion animation. Ewoks were tons and tons of characters that were all over the place and were ment like that. It would take a TON of work to delete them and replace them. In many cases it would just look weird since a bunch of the characters had close physical contact with the Ewoks. What you ask is just not feasable.

It's really funny listening to some of these thoughts here..

Replace every ewok with 3d creatures just because they "take away from the grateness"

It's almost like SW fans get tired of the films
after watching them over and over again, and they
expect new changes so that they have something to watch. Well, a good recepie would be to stop watching the films for a while, make a pause..

Ewoks are a significant part of 20th century culture, just like Munchkins or Gremlins. Classic movie creatures.
I can't imagine a whole wood full of unrealistic CG
    characters jumping around.
Or a replaced yoda, wow that would ruin my day.
i never bought the yoda from ep2. It was experessive and all, but CG is CG, and photographed matter is photographed matter.

I would really like to get inside the minds of people who say "digitally erase this, erase that, replace this, make CG that" and find out how do they imagine the process.

what I would really like to see in a rerelease is
a nicer, warmer and brighter color timing, and all the optical problems fixed. Basicly what I want to see is
the same kind of look I saw on TV version of SE plus the additions from the DVD's.

I'm pretty sure about a boxed set being released sometime in the furture, but 2007? I don't know what the likely hood of that will be. Right now, it's all rumors.

But what would make this set something to remember? Personally, I would love to have both the SE and O-OT versions of the films together in one set as well as more bonus material - including deleted scenes. I wouldn't want anymore changes done to the films. Leave them as they are, but give us the O-OT and more bonus material and I'll be VERY happy! :D

2007 does sound early for HD release, remember how long it took for SD DVD... I think a DVD re-release is more likely

That's assuming HD-DVD becomes the next standard format. Blu-Ray DVD is expected to compete.

Whatever it is (HD or blue-ray) it will finally be a decent home video system.

I remember the first propaganda in the 90's about DVD
"cinema quality video and sound" ,well the soundtrack is even better than the cinema version of DD, but
image couldn't even stand up to broadcast video standards. Now the compression is a LOT better than in the begining, and DVD's look closer to something you would expect from professional broadcast tapes.
    But cinema, please..

But HD DVD will indeed bring us the quality of
a smaller screen cinema presentation. HD is quite enough to fill the smallest multiplex screens.

But I still envy my grandmother when she talks about
times when first Technicolor films started to come into her village. She said they were all amazed by the gorgeous color of IB prints, specially since they were all used to BW films.
All we get now are duped down desturated prints.
But you can find a breathtaking print here and there when someone really makes an effort.

I would be nice to get some of the scenes that have never made it to the movies.
The Tosche station scene and the scene after Luke resues his friends from Jabba.

Besides the obvious desire to get both the original and SSE versions of the film, along with any available deleted scenes, I'd want just a few things:
    1. Finish the restoration job on ANH. The color's over-bright, some of dialog's fuzzy, and the music is mixed way too low. And Luke's lightsaber really shouldn't be three different colors.
    2. Ditch the Jabba scene in ANH, having him and Han repeat the previous scenes dialog nearly word for word serves no purpose, and slows the film down at a point where it's already slow enough. And besides, the CG Jabba, while better, still looks fake in comparision to ROTJ Jabba.
    3. Restore the original ending to ESB, the Vader scene is unnecessary and breaks up the music.
    4. Use John Williams original music in the scene where we first see the Imperial fleet in ESB('Aboard The Executor' on the soundtrack), and the alternate 'Sail Barge Attack' music.

They don't need anything added(just a couple tweaks),more isn't necessarily better, and I don't see how the ending of ROTJ could possibly be more intense.
"All this thread will do is get the purist in their Tosche Station voices to complain about Lucas not releasing the O-OT on DVD."

Or give you a chance to whine about them, in your Tosche Station voice?

I would like the lightsaber effects to look better. All of them should be like the PT sabers. And all the space scenes/battles should be totally and 100% completely redone in total CG so that it actually looks real, and also so that there aren't any of them annoying boxes around the ships/planets, plus all the other effects that look fake.

Change Yoda in TPM to CG, not because that I'm one of those whiners who can't stand how he looks because I, for one, like Yoda's look in all the movies, but it should be redone to CG so that the CG Yoda is consistent throughout the PT.

Jabba in ANH still looks like he could use some improvement.

Hayden in ROTJ is okay, but could also use some improvement. How about pasting his entire body over Shaw's instead of just his head?

Temuera should redo some of the stormtroopers voices, but not all of them, as not all of them are clones.

And I would also like a lot more bonus features.

    * improved lightsaber effects
    * jizzed up space action scenes in ANH
    * new music in a few ANH scenes
    * make it look like Hamill is not holding his hand inside his sleeve under Cloud City

That's my dream. Part of it may come true.

    -Have Han shoot first.
-Make Luke's saber blue instead of green on the falcon.
-Change Boba Fett's voice back to the original since it wouldn't make sense why he still sounds like his dad 24 years after he died.
-Reenter Shaw as Anakin so Yoda and Ben wont be reminded daily about the face that betrayed them and they wont feel the need to beat the ever living ***** out of him.

    Other possible changes
-Another musical number by the ewoks
-Add Tatooine to ESB so Lucas can say that the planet is in all six films.
    -Make Boba Fett a woman
-Change dialogue so we find out Ben is really Darth Vader.
-Make Han Leia's other older brother.
-Add lines for Lando, confirming that Mace Windu is his father.
-Add Yoda farting in all of his scenes.
    -Make Padme a force ghost.
-Credit Gilbert Gottfried as Wedge's gunner in the snowspeeder.

That's all I can think of at the moment.

By the way, all of the specal features stuff mentioned above all sound great, I wouldn't mind watyching all of those things.

That makes absolutely no sense whatsoever, Boba is Jango's clone, same voice, appearance everything, the clones have Jango's voice, so should Boba.

I don't see how the ending of ROTJ could possibly be more intense.

Simple. Reinstate the filmed-but-cut orders from Palpatine to Moff Jerjerrod:

"Should by some miracle the Rebels manage to destroy the shield generator, [mind trick tone & hand wave] you are to turn the Death Star upon Endor and destroy it."

Add in the few lines from the shooting script concerning that bit, and there you go. Puts the whole Ewok/Han & Leia fight in a new perspective, adds urgency to Luke's efforts to turn Vader and puts Lando under the gun as he races through the Death Star's interior. It also adds to the line "Give yourself to the Dark Side -- it is the only way you can save your friends" and explains the whole Executor's destruction sequence (its' crash into the station slowed down its' rotation as it turned toward Endor, giving Lando time to reach the reactor before the DS fired).

Wow, I never knew about those lines, but they would be a perfect addition.

    Here's another of my ideas:

In ANH, add in Star Destroyers near the Death Star and add a whole side battle where it and some ties engage part of the rebel fleet. It seems kind of weird to have the Death Star all alone.

I got the idea from looking at the second of these two pictures:

    [image=http://www.aptirrelevance.com/sw-archive/images/00200.jpg]

Plus I'm sure there must be a way to add back in some of the ANH deleted scenes. Maybe add back the Tosche Station and a shortened Biggs scene sometime after the droids are purchased somehow... But they really need to do something about Biggs' tacky choice of clothes. The colors just don't fit together at all. And maybe they should digitally remove Luke's floppy hat...

The star destroyers take away from their importance in ESB. Since we don't have a Death Star in the second film, we got Executor. Plus the classic X-Wing vs. TIE battle doesn't need added to.

I'm glad I didn't buy this year's dvd set, ha ha!

I'm curious though... did they add the imperial march in episode 4 ?

personally I hope they'll include ALL deleted scenes in the new HD DVD box - not just the biggs/luke and cantina stuff, NO! - I'm talking of sandstorms after the battle with jabba & co, of dagobah-scenes and god knows what else there might exist!!

oh yeah! - that miss piggy scene on dagobah!!!!

Well, no Imperial March in ANH, but that's another thing that needs to be added. It's a very crucial theme to the Vader/Anakin story.
