It might be a quirk. Shouldn't be problem.

Okay, thanks! This video card stuff is still fairly unfamiliar to me, since I'm mostly a console gamer.

Yes, it's probably just a bug in the software. In 2001, AGP cards were not quite as commonplace as nowadays, plus they were only 1x or 2x.

I'm looking to upgrade a part or two on my computer soon and I'm wondering what you guys think would be the best thing to get.

Here's the stuff I have right now that I'm willing to upgrade:

    AMD Athlon XP 2100+
    GeForce4 4200
    512 MB RAM
SY-KT333 Dragon Lite motherboard. (This should be able to handle any upgrades I make, but I figured I'd mention it anyways)

Keep in mind that I'm a poor student, so upgrading everything isn't an option unless it can be done for ridiculously cheap. ;)

Why are you looking to upgrade?

From your specs it seems you are well above most minimum requirements for games these days.

You could probably hold out for another 6 months to a year and get an even better upgrade, or the same upgrade you'd get now for half the price.

I know I could get away with not upgrading for a little while longer, and probably save some money in the process. But it's nice to be able to run the newest games in something other then the lowest quality graphics.

It's like cars. Yeah, my minivan does it's job and I could keep driving it around for awhile, but why not pay the little extra and upgrade to a decent sportscar? ;)

Plus, I won't actually upgrade for at least a month or two since I'll be hunting around for good deals.

Just get a new high end video card and you'll be set. The GFFX and ATI high end cards should be coming down in a few months since they both have new cards coming out now.

Ah, that's good to know. Guess I'll definitely be waiting a few months then.

    How do I uninstall DirectX?

Most efficient way - manually, from pure DOS, with either editing Registry or restoring a copy from before the installation...

    Quickest ways -

I just got a new PC. Its a pentium 4 3.0 GHZ with 512 RAM and a Radeon 9200. Will I be able to play the following games with good performance?

    Battlefield 1942
    Battlefield Vietnam
    UT2k4
    Medal of Honor: Allied Assault
    Call of Duty
    Far Cry

Battlefield 1942, Medal of Honor: AA, and Call of Duty should all run fine. My computer's less powerful then yours and it runs them.

I'm not so sure about the other games since I don't own them myself, but I imagine you could run them with any problems also.

You should be fine for most, if not all, games coming out at the present.

Woohoo. I finally get to use my thread! :D

Will 8x AGP cards work OK in 4x slots?

I'd always assumed yes, but I've seen conflicting reports on various websites, basically saying the card should be labelled "8x/4x" or else it won't work in a 4x slot.

FWIW, this is the card I'm eyeing up, and this is what I want to stick it into.

The 8x should work in the 4x slot, however some configuration may be necessary.

    ;)

    It installed like a dream.

Hey, did y'all know that KOTOR game is pretty cool?

AGP isfor graphics cards. PCI is for pretty much all the other cards.

Computers have at max 1 AGP slot. They have many PCI slots. Go here The pink one is an AGP slot, the white ones are PCI. The AGP will be at the top of the slots.

Do all computers have AGP slots? Because my Radeon 9200 is in a PCI slot. I'm not sure if I will be able to upgrade to a Radeon X800 Pro if I only have PCI slots

You won't be able to. Not all computers have a PCI slot.

By the time the X800 comes out though, it'll be out in two falvors, PCI-X and AGP. Might as well wait and get the PCI-X version, along with a new computer. Start saving though.

My computer is pretty good (minus the video card) Its a pentium 4 3.0 Ghz with 512 mb ram and a 160 gb hard drive. Anyway, will the pci version of the X800 pro be as capable as the AGP version? Also, is there anyway to tell if you have a AGP slot without opening up the tower. Thanx
