Agree! My love for watching speed skating began with the thrill of seeing Eric Heiden win 5 individual golds at the 1980 Lake Placid games (I was 10).

And yes @TCF-1138, even a simple pair of speed skates were definitely "exotic" equipment to me!

 

I am just glad we are getting to a stage with steaming services where we can pick our own events to watch.

I want to see curling and speed skating and skeleton...I don't need a 3 hour block in prime time of ice dancing.

Would love to see what the streaming numbers show people actually watch.

 

Summer for nostalgic reasons. My family was vacationing in Arizona during the 2004 Summer Olympics, and my eyes were glued to the screen for the first week. It was so much fun to watch. the 2020 (2021) Summer Olympics were pretty fun too, I caught a lot of it. I've barely watched any Winter Olympics, but I'll change that for this year.

 

Winter


Ski jumping is totally awesome. Like way awesome. The biathlon is also hilariously awesome. I mean...skiing and shooting guns. It's a James Bond Alpine chase scene waiting to happen and those frozen snot-cicles the athletes get are amusing as well.

Figure skating however, unless there's a Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan epic unfolding, totally blows.


Edit: Summer has women's beach volleyball though. Brazil's greatest exposition by far.

 

It's a very artistic sport. No one can be competitive in it unless they're an athlete. I love to watch, but I agree that judging the results is problematic, and declaring a winner can be highly controversial.

 

Variation on this: it's nice to see the stoic Scandinavians able to get excited about something for once.

 

As a dance competition enthusiast I am genuinely excited for this. Just like I also was for rock climbing to be added in Tokyo

 

Voted Winter. I watch both but enjoy the Winter more. Luge and Skeleton are nuts!

All the Lutherans who migrated to the US Upper Midwest are. At least that part of my family is/was.

 

Overall, I'm more familiar with the Summer Games. However, I think the Winter Games are more entertaining to watch. Maybe because it occurs during the dead of winter and the days are short, and there's not much of anything else going-on on network TV or basic cable. Moreover, many of the Winter Games are like novelties to me, such as curling. I don't know how that became an Olympic sport, but I like watching it.

 

I’d rather watch the Vespa Kids’ Mos Espa speeder chase in slow-motion (and on repeat for weeks) than the Olympics, summer or winter.

I like the cold winter sports, skiing, ice skating, curling (really good for naps! better than baseball!!). The alpine downhill is crazy! also ski jumping is fun. Bobsleds. The 1980 Hockey gold was the best Olympics evah! and that was before Twittah!

 

I voted for the winter. I like the artistic merits of figure skating.

If the summer Olympics featured softball and football/soccer more, I would have voted for that.

Agreed. I always enjoyed attending women's soccer (fall) and women's softball (spring) during my college years. I also enjoyed seeing winter and spring basketball for men and women. Good times.
