Welcome back to the 77th issue of PEOPLE!

3sm1r moved to America a few years ago; for lack of company, he signed up on our little corner of the internet. Since then, we’ve been, according to his own testimony, great helpers and online companions, but his lively, spirited stories, opinions, and jokes have been a unique boon to the JCC’s discourse. We are made all the richer for his presence here.

Read on to find out how the high schools of America and Italy are different from each other, discover the nicknames Esmir concocted for many different JCCers, learn what’d he do with a billion dollars, and see if you agree about his opinion on the Baroque. Oh, and don’t miss his recommendation for where you should vacation in Italy!

    Buona lettura!

So, are you a big fan of LEGO?

I used to play it as a kid, but Lego Maz was a completely random choice. I wanted a SW-related avatar that nobody else had and I lacked better ideas in the moment.
With time I got so used to it that I don't think I'll ever change it.

Is it weird that I basically imagine you as LEGO Maz with an Italian accent?

    hahahahah
    not at all !

Favorite breakfast cappuccino and croissant Lunch the best is usually something that does not make me sleepy, if I have to work afterwards. The optimal balance between pleasure and softness is vegetable sushi for me. At work they had it and it was also cheap enough. Dinner pizza Movie There will be blood (it's difficult to pick just one though) Book No country for old men Filmmaker Coen brothers, and not only for the movie mentioned above. I love almost everything they made, including the controversial remake of Ladykillers, even though it's not my favorite. Writer David Foster Wallace (yes, even in this case I read his stuff only in Italian, a part from the brief speech This is water) Composer Carter Burwell (the dude of most Coen brothers' movies, but also Three billboards). Singer Fabrizio De André (famous Italian singer who made songs with very beautiful lyrics) Philosopher Søren Kierkegaard Way to relax These days, it's mostly about watching stuff on Netflix, writing in this forum and if I'm not too tired learning to program in python. Did you read No Country in Italian or English?

In Italian: Non è un paese per vecchi .
Back then (more than ten years ago) I would have probably struggled with the original version. You're actually making me think that now is the time to go for it. After all I did understand the movie without problems.

I take it No Country is your favorite Coen Bros. movie? Because the movie you mentioned above was technically TWBB.

Strangely enough, No, I wouldn't say No Country is my favorite.
The analysis that the book makes of society is brilliant and the movie is an amazing adaptation to an amazing book but I tend to value more those movies whose stories were originally invented by them. Fargo and A Serious man are probably my favorites.

( Actually, I did rank most of their movies in the Rank something thread:

I haven't changed the ranking since then (but I'd probably put Fargo first now). I still have to decide where Miller's Crossing belongs. )

I still have to see Serious Man

Why are that and Fargo your favorite Coen Bros. films?

I see. Then I probably should avoid excessive spoiler about A Serious Man. It's the story of a man living in a Jewish community in Minnesota, in the 60s, whose life is challenged by a certain number of unpleasant events, that stimulate him to seek for some meaning in all the mess. It's difficult to determine precisely what I love so much about the movie, since in my opinion it's not one of those that have some crazy big scene that make the movie iconic but it's more about the general atmosphere and the way they present the situations, given the context. What's impressive about it is that in some moments there is a sort of intrinsic funniness that is not the result of a joke but it just emerges from the way they edit a scene. This is how good they are: they can make comedy simply in virtue of their technical talent. I think you should watch it when you have time.

Fargo would be worthy just for the opening and Frances McDormand alone.
She's of course devised as an antithesis with respect to the classical detective tropes of the standard noir. The hero is usually a man, physically strong, who's also cynical and very often lonely. Thus they came out with a pregnant woman, who's nice with everybody and has a lovely husband, and has a goofy attitude etc etc.
Then I love the minor characters. They're funny, but they also feel very real to me. I asked in the besties thread about the "you betcha! Yaa" and they confirmed me that this is actually the way they talk over there.
There is a sort of disconnection between the banality of the routine of the common people and the madness of the events happening in the story, and I think that it works awesomely.
Then I don't know what's your opinion on the subject, but there is also some subtext that I haven't fully resolved yet. They seem to give extreme attention to the element of the television, and people's glazed expression in front of it. There is an amazing scene when

Buscemi and his colleague break into the house to kidnap the woman, in which she looks out of the glass door and she almost has the same entranced facial expression that she has in front of the screen, and then boom, they break the glass, as if they were somehow breaking the forth wall, and suddenly everything gets real for her and she starts screaming and reacting as if she was finally involved in what was happening.

so, to make it brief, I'm still not entirely sure of what they wanted to communicate on this aspect specifically, but it's nice the very fact that the movie leaves me thinking about it.

Why is that period between 550 and 450 BC your favorite?

I remember that in high school I really enjoyed ancient Greece, and in this period some of the most interesting events happened (for example the wars between Greek cities and the Persian empire were around 490-480; in popular culture they might be famous for the weird movie 300). But quite important things were taking place all around the world.
Both Confucius and Buddha lived somewhere in that century, and also Sun Tzu. Meanwhile, Carthage was flourishing, Rome was getting strong but not too arrogant yet, and of course Athens was at its best.
My knowledge is really limited to the memory of high school and very few books, but I feel that it must have been a cool period in human civilization.

How long ago was high school for you? This was in Italy, correct?

Yes. In Italy high school is 5 years. You start from around 15 and you finish when you are not far from 20.

Do you think you know enough about our high schools to do a little compare and contrast? Even if your knowledge comes only from the movies?

    To US ?
Well, I don't know how faithful the movie representation is, but there are several differences on the basis of what I see in movies like Lady Bird.
We don't have this big party at the end of the year -with the students getting nervous at the idea of asking a partner to go together- or anything similar.
I have never dissected an animal during the biology class.
Sport has no relevance among the college activities. We used to play a bit of soccer or volleyball at very low level among classmates two hours per week and that's all.
Also, I see that in movies they are always doing group activities. I don't know whether that's how it works or it is rather just a cinematic tool to make characters interact, but I had virtually zero group activities during my years in high school. We might decide to study together, of course, but it was never imposed by the professor.
For the rest it's pretty much the same, I believe.

What do Italian schools have that American ones don’t?

    ummh, let me think.
Well, where I went we used to do, once per month, something called autogestione, "self-administering". Basically you don't do standard courses for one day and instead students are free to organize by themselves brief lectures or activities concerning any topic. Rather than staying in your class you can go where you want in the rooms where they are doing something. These activities could range from just watching movies of a particular director to actually inviting guests to talk about their field of expertise.

Perhaps you have something similar in US as well though.

If you had your very own Wikipedia article about you, how would it begin?

Darth Esmir The Second is a JCC member and philanthropist
I mean why not? If David Koch gets to be called "philanthropist", I sure as hell deserve no less

Is that your real name, “Esmir?”

No, it's nice to be known that way, but my real name is Alberto and friends usually call me Albi.

What do you think of New York City so far?

New York City is awesome. Whatever is your taste, here you can find something that is appropriate for you. These days I'm not enjoying it particularly, obviously, since I'm mostly staying closed at home, but in normal conditions it's the best.

I don’t remember—where exactly did you end up deciding to live? I think I remember you debated living in Yonkers as opposed to the city proper?

I had to work in Yorktown Heights, Westchester County, so I was wondering whether it was better to live in White Plains to decrease the length of the commute. But No, at the end I decided to live in Harlem despite the long commute, and I'm very happy with this decision. I have already been living a relatively lonely life here. In White Plains it would have been even worse from that point of view. At least here I can do stuff in the weekends and the evenings. If I were married with family I would have probably taken different decisions.

There’s a lot of JCCers in New York—have you met any yet?

No, I haven't met anyone in person so far. But they did provide me with essential advises. Dp, for example, introduced me to the best bakery in the city, and I started going there every single Saturday. I miss that place so much.

    What is the place?

It's called Hungarian Pastry Shop. I would recommend it to whoever visits the city. It's on Amsterdam Avenue close to Saint John cathedral.
The sweets and cakes are very good but they also make decent cappuccino.

How does New York City differ from European, namely Italian, metropolises?

With globalization I do believe that cities are getting every day more similar to one another, so it's not very easy to talk in absolute terms, but I can tell what I personally found surprising about NYC and America in general. (Perhaps I have discussed some of these topics elsewhere; apologies if I repeat myself)

    The size of things
I get lost in AMC every single time I go there. It's by far the biggest cinema I've ever seen, and the popcorn average cup is proportional to that.

Waiters keeping asking me whether everything's OK.
I mean thank you, I feel exactly as I was feeling when you asked me the same question 3 minutes ago.

(Still, I totally understand why that happens, so it's really more of a consideration than a critique.)

Women who don't know me calling me babe
Unexpectedly pleasant, but surely strange nonetheless.

    You need a car
This American reality shouldn't have been that surprising to me if I just thought for a moment at most of the movie/ tv shows, like Simpsons, Breaking Bad, Sopranos, Grand Torino etc etc. You have these families with their nice house -flags everywhere- and at least one car, but then it's clear from what I see that there would be basically nothing at walking distance from the house, and it's not completely clear whether they could easily take a bus anyway.

    What’s friendlier: Italy or America?

I only know NYC so I can't really talk for the rest of the country, but I'm going to say that the ranking from warmest to coldest is

    Southern Italy
    Harlem people
    Northern Italy
    The rest of NYC

Then well, it's useless to say that these are just broad generalizations that should not be taken too seriously.

Are you from Southern or Northern Italy?

I'm from Northern Italy. The Italian stereotype known abroad is generally more representative of the South than the North.

I’m aware there are differences between North and South—what would you say they are, whether cultural, political, temperamental?

The general cliche is that in the South people are less organized, lazier, more religious and family-bound, more clever in the bad sense, but also warmer, funnier and more likable than the North.

There used to be significant hostility toward the South in the past. Recently not so much, and the anti-South party has re-branded, becoming anti-Europe instead.

In the islands they tend to have a stronger sense of cultural identity. In Sicily in particular they talk about their food and their territory all the time. In fairness, their food and territory are, indeed, amazing, so...

Yeah, if you're looking for a holiday, I'd probably recommend Sicily.

What do you mean by “more clever in the bad sense?” :p

Well, you're the English major :p

What I mean is to be clever when it comes to getting away by dodging the rules or somehow tricking the others and getting advantage from that. What's the English word?

Well, there’s “loophole,” but there’s no related adjective for someone who uses them as a character attribute. Maybe “unscrupulous?”

Tbqf, this sounds like the Mafia :p

Speaking of... how unscrupulous would you rate yourself?

Not mafia, more like the talent of Saul Goodman in making his hustles. We have a word for that.

To answer your question, I believe that in normal life I'm usually very direct and straightforward, and I'd say honest, but when it comes to little administrative rules I'm generally a mess. I hate to occupy my mind with what I must pay and how I must pay and other similar issues, then I forget things, I suffer bureaucracy a lot etc etc.
In Switzerland this attitude ended up costing me money several times, 'cause I didn't pay on time the phone bill or maybe didn't do things in the way they wanted me to do them. This is not explicitly about being unscrupulous but I guess it's related.

What’s that word? I assume you meant Italian, not English

    Furbo, scaltro

    Why is Sicily so amazing?

It's a combination of delicious food, beautiful beaches, nice places for hiking, pleasant weather and fascinating cultural spots. Then, for those who understand Italian, during summer they play the Greek tragedies in an authentic ancient theater and it's very cool.

What is your favorite Ancient Greek tragedy?

    Antigone.
It's the story of this woman who gets punished because she secretly buries her brother, who was an enemy of the city.

    Who is your favorite person?

Person? You mean celebrity or relative/friend?

    Person can be absolutely anyone

Oh, nice. There is a girl I like, she's full of enthusiasm for doing things and love for her neighbor. Unfortunately her "neighborhood" includes her boyfriend, but Yeah, I think it's fair to say that she's my favorite person.

    Wait are you her neighbor?

    Does she know you exist?

    Hehe sure!
"Love her neighbor" in the sense of being a nice person.

But if she has a boyfriend, don’t you think someone else should be your favorite person?

Oh no! I think she's cool regardless of any personal romantic involvement. The kind of cool like "the world would be a better place if everyone was like her".
Besides, evaluating people is never easy :p

Would you rather... have an ice cold glass of water or a hot chocolate? I never drink iced water. Even during hot summers I get it room temperature. I love hot chocolate in winter. Go for a vacation on a tropical island or in the snow? Tropical island. Be paid lots of money or do what you love? Be paid lots of money. There is no such thing as doing precisely what you love. If it's my job, I'm inevitably going to get stressed about it for one reason or the other. I've never enjoyed working. I chose money when I came here and I absolutely don't regret it. Travel to Mars for a year or live in a moon colony for a year? Travel to Mars, and btw I hope someone will get there before I die. Get Bernie as president or a Democrat supermajority? I don't trust the Democrats even with the supermajority. Bernie's decisions on foreign politics would save a lot of lives, and I believe that he'd go quite heavy with executive orders, to be frank. So, Bernie for president, 100%. Go on a safari or one of those arctic cruises Arctic cruises Be buried or cremated I have no opinion on the subject Live the rest of your life in USA or Italy This is my current big dilemma Be a whale or an elephant Whale Go back in time or forward into the future Given the current trend, absolutely back in time

Can you describe your dilemma in more detail?

Sure. First, I'd like to just give a bit of context.
Like anybody else, I guess, in order to be happy living in a place, I need to somehow create a sort of network of people I love that I can meet frequently enough.

As long as I was in university, this has never been an issue, because you live in a context where you keep being surrounded by a lot of people of your age, and sooner or later you end up in a group of at least 4 friends that make you feel at home.

The transition Italy-Switzerland was more about the sense of adventure and the excitement for finally living without the family. Being around 22-23, the lack of stability was the last of my concerns. In the later years it was starting to get slightly boring but I left soon enough for it not to be an issue.

Then, in 2018, moving to US, I had to experience two major changes in my life: the first is of course being really far from everyone, and the second is to work in a company. And that's a big difference, because from interacting with something like 15 people per day you move to interact with 3, one of whom is your 50 yo boss. Being mostly alone at work and mostly alone at home is kind of tough. In addition to that, NYC is a place where people keep moving, so it happened very often that friends left for other countries few months after I met them.

Now, back to your question, I don't think I will ever be in a place better than this city, but I still haven't created my "nest" here and this is something a bit scary when thinking about the future. In Italy, on the other hand, the social aspect would be ok since I have the people I grew up with, but hell, my hometown sucks compared to here. I mean not even close. Both in terms of opportunities and in terms of just how nice the city is.

    And this is the dilemma.

Maybe JCers can you help you with that nest.

    What is your hometown?

Well, they already did. Writing here has been a major component of my way of handling the loneliness, especially during the pandemic. I think there are cool people in this community.

My hometown is Torino. You might know it for Juventus soccer team and the Winter Olympic games of 2006.
It's also the place where Nietzsche got insane.

    Torino!?

    Your hometown doesn’t suck!

Ok, perhaps I was too tough on it, it's not that bad. But I got a bit tired of it after more than 20 years. Maybe I'd like it again after this long break.

Why did Nietzsche go insane there?

I don't know the details of what drove him crazy. He spent some time there, and according to the legend one day he suddenly started hugging a horse in Piazza Carlo Alberto, and then he started raving and claiming to be Dionysus and Jesus crucified.

There is also a small memorial stone in the road leading to the square, where he used to live:

It's funny that in the plaque they call him Federico Nietzsche, according to an old tradition of italianizing foreign names.

Who do you think will win in November?

    Trump

    Why?

I don't have much to support my position, it's more about feeling than a rational argument, I'll give you that.

I know that every statistical evidence suggests that Biden will win, but Trump is the incumbent and he has nothing to lose. Right now we are at a minimum in his popularity curve, but if before October the number of Covid cases starts going down again, I believe that the gap will start closing again and he might get competitive and claim a comeback.

Let’s talk about your 3 posts rule—would you, please, reiterate it here?

Yes. I have recently arrived at the conclusion that three posts are enough for any exchange with another member, and I do my best to act accordingly.

The first post is to express my opinion as clearly as possible.
The second is to clarify it in case something is not clear.
The third can be occasionally used to address the other person's counter-arguments.

I feel that when a four post is needed, usually there is hostility in the air, and the other posters in the thread are already bored by the exchange anyway.

I believe that since I started following the rule my interactions with people here have improved.

Is the first post your general statement or reaction to a topic or a reply to someone else’s interaction with your statement?

    The former.
The first statement is the one in which I express the opinion that becomes the issue of the discussion.

Can’t it be seen as self-serving to adopt such a habit? When challenged on your views, you can simply hide behind the rule.

If my views are wrong, it's even better if I stop posting rather than desperately trying to score some argumentative point with elaborated rhetorical tricks.
Three posts give me plenty of space to make my case. By knowing that I only have three posts, I am stimulated to do my best to explain what I believe in the most exhaustive way possible, and thus to improve the quality of what I write.
If I get challenged and the opponent's argument is way better than mine, those who are reading the thread will agree with them, and I don't believe that they care particularly about whether I changed my mind myself or not.
Then, like most things, they must be taken with elasticity: there might be exceptions in which it's perhaps better to break the rules. But I do think that they work very well in most cases.

Were there any specific discussions that prompted you to come up with this little rule?

Yes, especially in the senate threads.
In the past I have even been involved in endless discussions leading nowhere several times. They still happen quite frequently involving other posters.
Very often they just turn into sophistic exercises, and I'm not a fan of them.

Come up with about a dozen JCCers and attach an Italian nickname to each of them

Sounds great. I have in mind so many people and names that it will be difficult to download everything from my head.

    Ramza = Il Secchione
JoinTheSchwarz = Il Maestro delle Prigioni
blackmyron = Il Vice Maestro delle Prigioni
Lordban = Il Gallo Senza Sonno
Watto = L'Olandese Volante, but also Il Regista
Tom, Darth Punk, cubman987, Coruscant = Gli Angeli Della Morte (they are the referees on who lives and who dies in the SB)
Diggy = Cerbero (just because he's one of the first who welcome people in the Underworld, that is, in the JCC)
Coruscant = L'Aedo (because you sing the epic songs of the heroes of the JCC)
Point Given = Il Punto Dato, Talvolta, Ma Non Sempre
    dp = L'Uomo Gif
    Integral = Il Giocatore d'Azzardo
    afs1983 = L'Insegnante
Point Given, Chorus, afs, Jedi Merkurian, heels, Obi Anne, Todd, Schwarz, TCF = I Nove Re
Schwarz, Tom, Yorick, A Star War, Chorus, jp, Todd, myself = Gli Amici di Barbara Gibson
LloydChristmas = Meno Due Ben Q
    Pensivia = La Saggia
Tina = La Milionaria (because she is strong in quiz)
    appleseed = L'Ottimista
    Yodaminch = Il Buono
Glitterstimm = Lo Zombie di Gramsci
Darth Guy = Il Paladino della Giustizia
Glitterstimm, Mrzap, Abadacus, CT, Darth Guy = Il Comitato di Salute Pubblica
    solojones La Scrittrice
V03 Il Servo del Diavolo (because he heals people)
and Rogue1 is another member of Comitato di Salute Pubblica whom I previously forgot.
And AutumnLight is also a member of the group Amici di Barbara Gibson.

Ok. I will stop adding to the list now, even though I am probably still missing important elements.

I’m thinking of a number between 1 and 20. What is it?

    It’s 7

**** wait I never even thought of a number, go again

    Damn!

This time I'm gonna try 7

    No. 14.

    Which, incidentally, is 7x2.

    Bad luck

What do you think of supernatural notions and possibilities? Can someone be psychic?

For me, if it's supernatural, it's by definition non existent, 'cause I believe that the material world coincide with everything that is.

    What’s life all about?

We exist with no intrinsic purpose. We are just here. Then, it's up to each one of us to decide what meaning we want to give to our existence, and what we live for. It's a beautiful responsibility. And this freedom is scary, but exciting.

    What do you live for?

I guess I'll go for a decent compromise between feeling good myself and making other people happy as well, whenever possible.

Ok, say you somehow come into a billion dollars—you’re now fabulously wealthy—what do you do with it all?

I can produce about 4 high budget movies, if I don't care about advertisement and distribution -and I don't- or several seasons of a tv show.

What I would do is probably to take courses of how to write a screenplay, maybe getting some help from the most expert JCC members, and put into movie my story. Few millions would be enough for my personal movie. Then, with the money I have left, I'd like to make a faithful cinematic representation of two fantastic stories: The Silmarillion and The Malazan book of the Fallen. The former shouldn't give too many problems. The latter has a super complex plot, so I would probably focus on the Chain of Dogs and Coltaine's tragedy as a starting point and see where to go from there.

Would you get yourself a nice bachelor pad while working on these movies? You got to sleep somewhere, right?

Oh, right... well, I don't care particularly about the house, but Yes, since I won't need to work I believe I'd choose to live in some cool place. Fair point.
(as a side note, I didn't mention stuff like charity and initiatives to make the world a better place, because I started from the assumption that your question was about what I'd enjoy to do for myself, rather than specifically how I would seriously handle a billion dollar, but correct me if I'm wrong).

No, seriously, how would you handle the billion, in all ways?

    Oh, I see.
The funny thing is that -even though it's a grotesque level of wealth- one billion remains a kind of limited amount when someone tries to really dream big.

Anyway, there will be a fraction dedicated to improve society, for example sponsor affordable housing, research in renewable energies etc etc.

Then I'd like to create a chain of package-free grocery stores. I've always found it weird that we buy a new plastic container every time we finish our toothpaste. And the same is true for detergents and many other things. When I think about it, I'm genuinely surprised by how primitive the current system is in that regard. If you go to Whole Foods, you can bring a plastic bag and take as many nuts as you want from big containers. Alright, cool, but why does it only work for nuts, coffee and few other things?
Every single product that is liquid or powder would be unpacked, and costumers should bring their containers from home. There is something in this spirit in Brooklyn, but it's a bit fancy and it mostly works for cosmetic stuff, and soaps and creams. So far I haven't found any big chain that is serious about making this transition to package-free.

Then, if there are money left, and I made wise investment decisions, I can probably make some movies as well.

Hmm... what would you call this package-free grocery company?

I'm not very good at names, but after I'll get a billion dollars I'll think it through and I'll let you know, I promise.

Did you say you were having visa trouble? Is that all resolved now?

    Thanks for asking :)
Unfortunately there's not much to be resolved: I should be looking for a job right now to find a new sponsor for the visa, but I am not doing it. I will almost surely move back to Europe in few months, then I'll take some time off and think about what to do next.

Oh no, I’m so sad you’re not going to be able to stay :(

Do you think you would ever come back?

Oh Yes, I will keep looking for opportunities here, and I believe that after things will get back to normal it will become easier to find something.
Anyway, a little break will be healthy, I think.

Will things ever get back to normal?

    Hehe good question.
All I can do is to hope for the best.

I find it to be a tad silly myself; it’s too limiting, but if it works for him, then my opinion on it won’t matter. :p

Lovely interview overall. Fargo is an all-time classic for a reason, and if not for The Big Lebowski, it would be my favorite Coen Brothers film (from those that I’ve seen).

    Thank you all guys.
So, I feel that few comments are needed

    1) Some additions that came to my mind after I answered the question:

Rylo Ken = L'Illustre Membro dell'Accademia della Crusca
    Wocky = L'ingranaggio ben Oliato
    Chewgamma = Arturo
Watto, Chewgamma, Rylo Ken, soitcometothis, Darth Punk, Yorick, Tom, Rogue1, Ramza, HL, sj = Gli Autostoppisti

    2) Cor is amazing in making interviews. He manages to formulate the questions in such a way that they stimulate the other person's creativity.
    3) This is the only online community in which I have ever taken part. And it's a wonderful community. I'm slowly starting to understand some members' personality and it's a pleasant discovery.

I feel bad for not meeting up with you. Hopefully we can do so soon before you go, and assuming we don't get hit again by the virus.

    It would be great.
When things will calm down a bit with this mess we should organize. In any case I will be here at least until the end of the year, so there is time.

I'm pretty sure there's a censor filter preventing the nickname I was given from being translated properly into English ;)

One of the two is indeed correct, but I'll let you with the doubt tormenting you forever :p

    @Lordban
I'm very proud of every single nickname I chose, but I have to confess that yours is one of those I'm the proudest of, so I'm very happy you happened to read this.
