    IC: Natalia Markova
    Captain's Ready Room, Darkest Night

Natalia left the ready room and returned to her post, head down the whole way. It felt to her as if she had failed a test of somesort. That she had displeased him and that worried her. She'd wanted to be the best she could be, to use her skills to the best of her abilities. She just didn't know or feel like coordinating a large engineering project was the best use. Though she told him many times she would follow his orders if they stood, he belayed them. Instead, sending her to train with the shuttle pilots. She was certified to fly them, a part of her training at the academy. She didn't have the skills to be a fighter pilot, and shuttles were simple enough to pilot. Roll, pitch, yaw, thrust all the same basic principles but, on a much smaller scale.

Was this going to make her better, more flexible? Wasn't there something else? Surely there was something in the computer system, or hardening it against outside intrusion. She had top marks in computer science and had some experience in computer security. Again it felt like a waste of her talents a thing that she could succeed at but never really master. She was just left confused and worried. Was this going to affect her career, her life here. Captain Trotter constantly looking down on her, constantly giving her disapproving looks.

The hairs on the back of her neck stand up. Those harsh glares, almost like her father's. When he could catch her practicing the Viol rather than studying. Or when she got a poor grade in her classes. Should she just accept the roles and assignments given her. Even if they are ridiculous and not in line with her skills. In the end her worry wasn't about herself it was about the effectiveness of the ship and the crew. Her inexperience could have lead to any number of catastrophic outcomes. What if she overtaxed the engines, or caused them to short in the middle of a battle? It would cost the lives of her and the entire crew. It would be reckless of her to think she could do better than trained engineers. Maybe it was reckless of Captain Trotter to assign such a task to her.

She returned to her station head still down still questioning if this training was of any benefit to her status but, more importantly the ship. Her job was the see the ship safely through whatever it found itself. Did that not extend to everything she did? Should not the Captain consider how personnel movements or tasks could affect the safety of the ship? It shouldn't be on her to worry about that.

In the meantime she returned to her original task, finding the few seconds she could to arrive at Javin on time. This she could understand, this she knew she would not fail at. And failure was a terrible thing.

    IC: Stormtrooper Captain Kurt Stein
One of many Mess Halls, Javin Oversector Command & Administrative Complex

Kurt collected himself, walked out the stall, and looked upon the gently moving body. The man was clearly stunned.

"Nice work," Kurt told Adrias as the door swung open (again) and several stormtroopers followed by an ISB Officer walked in.

"Good work, Captain Stein," the lengthy, triangular pale faced ISB man said, "And you, sir," he said, nodding towards Adrias before turning back to Kurt, "Lord Vader informed me of your mission. Luckily, travel orders were incorrectly filed and I was closer then what Lord Vader thought," the state security employee looked down at the stunned trooper, then the dead officer, as the two stormtroopers filed in deeper into the refresher, checking for weapons & other possible hidden enemy tangos (two more Stormtroopers stood outside the refresher doors, redirecting bladders in need of relief to other refreshers). The ISB officer sighed as he looked at the dead body, "We've been tracking him for months, now. Sloppy way to cover up his tracks. We almost thought he was purposely being sloppy to lure us into a trap, but alas not. He was just desperate for credits, as his ex-wife left him nearly broke with child support payments on his three children. And she had up to fifty percent of his retirement when he did retire in two years from now. Desperation," the agent looked back to Kurt & Adrias, "Is the best recruiting tool these radicals have. Desperation and lies. Remember that," he looked back out the door towards the two waiting troopers, "You may call medical and bring a prisoner escort," he then looked back to the two men, "You may carry on, both of you, but," he extended a hand towards Adrias, "I'll need that blaster before you go."

OOC: I had said I was in my quarters after the funeral, but I'll retcon that to standing in the hangar bay because you know? drama is cool
    IC: Senior Lieutenant Gwen Levric
Auxiliary Hanger Bay (Forward Hanger), Darkest Night; hyperspace

The commodore's aide-de-camp had been staring at her as people filtered out after the jump to hyperspace.

And now he was coming toward her.

A bit disconcerting, that, especially if the ensign somehow blamed MI's failures for the commodore's death. He had at least twenty centimeters on her, and that prosthetic arm of his was more than useful in a fight, even if he were older than she was by about twenty or so years. They'd conversed in the past, yes, and Levric doubted that he would try anything, but she hadn't made it this far in Military Intelligence if she didn't view everything and everyone as a potential threat. Besides, her focus had been on Englewood, distant as he'd been, and perhaps that had been a mistake.

Still, getting close to anyone was probably a mistake. Bad enough that she cared for her team as she did. (If her mentor ever found out about that, she'd likely be in deep trouble. From all angles.)

Yet there was something about the ensign that had always intrigued her--a thoughtfulness she had seen in very few other Imperials she'd met, a deep well of knowledge that seemed to come from...elsewhere. Much like the inordinate amount of Corellian luck she'd found herself with, that extra little sense of when something was dangerous, or when someone was not to be trusted. But this Ensign--she was not sure.

Still, he'd known Englewood, and she'd have to secure her alliances and friendships among the staff before the replacements came in, take any measures she could of their personal loyalty and leanings, their temperature regarding the ISB, that sort of thing. Because even if the ensign wasn't making her danger sense fire off, those messages were, this whole situation was.

It's not paranoia if the danger is real, she told herself. But it's even more dangerous to act as if the danger is real if you don't know where the danger is coming from. Best to be smart and to be careful. That's how you stay alive when you live on the cliffside.

When the grizzled old man stopped near her, she smiled at him, a tight greeting. "My condolences, ensign," she said. "I know that the commodore and you were close. Is there something that you need?"

Listening to the tap of the one other with an gimp leg that hadn't seen proper medical care he felt a throb in his own - was it camaraderie? Or simply another phantom pain? Grunting he looked back at the others as they argued in whispers.

Didn't really seem to amount to much until he watched the lift begin to rise and a little light bulb went off in his head as he remembered when he first started and would use the tubes to oversee the food transfers before finding someone he trusted to delegate it to.

Alex looked back at Jengleheimer, lowering his voice: "Come on, Chief. This way. We've forgotten about the PTTs."

"If I didn't want to saute something right now I could slap myself." he muttered with a shake of the head before following after the group.

They of course referred to the Passenger Transfer Tubes that allowed everyone within the ship's complement to travel move between the hangar bays, and seeing how relatively empty of people the Main Hangar looked, going out that way might be a good way to speed things up from this log jam of the main doors.

Tactical Training Environment Room, Trooper Barracks, Darkest Night

Elena nodded back at Animal and took cover next to the troopers. "Do not engage until after the Artillery Barrage has subsided." She stressed, and motioned for Animal to take a spot next to her. "This may only be a simulation here, but there are Rebels who engage in this kind of ruthless behaviour." Elena held back on saying just how bad it really was. They'll learn that soon enough. Just like I needed to.

The Artillery Barrage was deafening. Elena tried not to outwardly flinch as a simulated shell landed near them and knelt down, the ground shaking. She pulled out her pistol again but didn't turn the safety off. Always keep it on until you charge, you don't want the blaster to go off if you drop it.

Uyter Imperial Academy, Uyter, Outer Rim

Weapons Training, Two Years After Elena's Arrival

"This weapon is your life Cadets." The man speaking to them was a Clone. He was older; but not yet grey haired. Crys. He was part of the 212th Attack Battalion. A Clone Wars Veteran. A hero. At least, that was how Elena viewed him. She sat in the front row, hands in front of her, back straight. Watching as Crys loaded and unloaded the Blaster Rifle.

"Cadet Shan, would you care to demonstrate how one shoots a Blaster?"

"Yes Commander." Elena stood and saluted their Cadet Leader, a woman of eighteen.

As Elena picked up the blaster rifle she glanced over and saw their Cadet Leader, Rosemary Price was holding out her datapad. She nodded at Elena to shoulder the Blaster Rifle and Elena followed orders; keeping the sights off of anyone in the room. It was heavy, but Elena kept a hold on it for a few seconds longer then she knew she was able, and let it drop when she noticed the Clone, Crys nod his head at her and catch the Blaster Rifle as she stumbled a bit giving it back.

"You should do strength training with them." He looked at Rosemary who frowned back at them.

    "Their Twelve."

"We we're children too, in the Clone Wars. Train them properly or don't do it all."

Elena sighed and shook herself from the memory before turning her attention back to the simulation. "Ten seconds..."

Alex stepped to one side inside the box-like lift chamber, to ensure that everyone that wanted in, got in, then pressed the button to seal the burnished metal double doors, the lift ascending smoothly.

"Good call, this." Reen commended Baille.

"Thanks." Harte acknowledged with a slight blush to her cheeks. "More like good observation." She grinned up at Alex as he proudly ruffled her hair, accepting the gesture for a moment before shifting her head away.

The doors slid aside three levels up, and they stepped out to see the double sentry guard presence of Navy Troopers, still at attention from the passage of the senior officers, and Alex could see the backs of Debgate and Steadfast in the distance, halfway through the PTT.

Passing the guards with a nod, Alex overheard one of the troopers requesting over his comlink, that a Mark IV Sentry Droid be despatched to join Steadfast in the Main Hangar.

IC: CWO Ori Shreddies, bridge of the Darkest Night
    Location: Hyperspace

It was several seconds before Levric returned her comm call: "Bridge, Levric here. I'm not expecting any hypercomms at present, but if any arrive, please alert me."

    "Understood, Ma'am. Bridge out."

Ori made a note in the logs, recording the instruction, then, after closely monitoring ship communications, recalled that the Chief Medical Officer had given her an odd assignment, to pass a lollipop to the navigation officer who had trotted off; a reward for her actions on Lepsawn 1-9, that world where they had recently been engaged.

The white stick that went into the plastic-wrapped ball of confectionary, was sticking out of one of her tunic pouches, next to her code cylinder.

The Chief Warrant Officer pulled it up, slipped off her seat and went the couple paces over to Markova's station, and although tempted to place it on her chair, remembered how pre-occupied she had been upon her departure, and she would probably just sit on the thing.

As interesting as it would be to see The Princess and the Pea, if she had her youngling tale identified correctly, played out in real life, if the captain got upset about the matter, things wouldn't look good for herself, as merely an officer appointed by warrant.

Instead, she laid the candy down on the angled station, clear of any important-looking toggles or readouts, and turned back to her own station, hesitating and frowning at the contoured black synthleather of her own chair...

There was a slim golden package, like a cigarillo case. About the length of her hand, from wrist to fingertips, and less than a third wide. Printed in black, on what she took to be the lid, was a single word: Invitation.

Surely she hadn't been sitting on that!

She glanced around to see if anyone was watching her, a stealthy type that had nipped in while her back was turned, and waited for her reaction.

Ori picked the thing up and sat down, setting it down on her station as she turned it around, looking for the catch to open it.

When she did so, flipping the thing open like a datapad, she found a token in the base with a red button in the centre of it, and a folded piece of good quality flimsi that read:

    Greetings

"Hello." She murmured aloud, leaning over the correspondence.

Her gaze flicked left and right along the lines of script, as it continued:

You are hereby invited to a Sunny Beach Vacation. This year, it shall be hosted on the water world of Scarif, just off the Manda Merchant Run, located in the Abrion Sector. We just ignore the fact it was listed within an Imperial Exclusion Zone otherwise the surf, sun and sand this tropical paradise provides will go to waste.

Enclosed you shall find a token. This shall take you there and is also your proof of entry. Hold down the button and close your eyes and count to ten. Make sure you've packed the sunscreen with your beach gear.

Regardless of whether you are experiencing the cold of winter or caught in heat and humidity of summer, we all need a place to unwind. It would be wonderful to see you there.

If you aren't inclined for swimming and beach activities, there will be plenty of food and drink to enjoy at the cabana and restaurants, and other activities about the island.

Attend as yourself or as one of your RP characters. Don't forget to sign the guest book and to indicate in which realm/RPG you reside from.

    All the best,

    The Corellian Outrider

"Who in the Oseon, is The Corellian Outrider?" She wondered, deep in contemplation as Captain Markova stepped down into the crew pits, and returned to her station to Ori's right. "And what do you mean, by 'RP characters'? Let alone, 'realm/RPG'."

There were many legends and myths out there. About the people who built the mysterious pyramids on Sharu. The Kingdom of Jod and all that stuff. And the golden invites. Mysterious letters that appeared before selected individuals, transporting them to otherworldly celebrations.
This was the first time that she had heard of one inviting someone to a beach vacation!

The Centrality spacer had studied herself in the fresher mirror enough to know that she needed some sun, some fresh air, and if this was genuine, and not some trick to goad her into pressing a button whilst on the bridge of a Star Destroyer; scuttlebutt said that there had already been one explosion up here, so....first thing, get it off the bridge.

But how? Say that I don't feel well? That I'm delivering a message.

She nodded to herself. The latter idea sounded the best. And if this thing did not transport her to a holiday destination, she could be back in her place as if nothing had ever happened.

    ****

Crew Barracks - communal femme freshers

Ori Shreddies was ready, down on one knee, right hand gripped around the strap of her holdall, containing her holiday clothes, half a bottle of suncream from her last shore leave, credit chip, bottle of water, ration bars. Left arm stretched above her, knuckles resting on the rim of the white ceramic sink, index finger lightly holding the token to the inside bowl of the sink, so that if this turned out to be a bomb, she would only lose a finger, and the blast would go up and away from her.

Clearly she had thought this through, only so far. And certainly not as far as the ceiling and it's shockwave reflection characteristics.

Ori blindly pressed the button, counted to ten with her eyes squeezed tight, and both Ori and her bag, oh, and the sink as well, disappeared as if they had never existed.

Pressurised water sprayed from the shorn pipe.

Sandy inclined his head in respect, "Thank you, Lieutenant," the man looked towards the mag field---where Englewood had gone through not so long ago----and then back to the intelligence officer, "He was a good friend. And a good officer. Tell me Lieutenant Levric, what were your thoughts on Lepsawn One-dash-Nine? Some say the Commodore's actions, sending in a undercover team, were reckless, since that team had no prior training together or experience together in such matters. Some even float the idea of a court martial, if not for the Commodore's death. What are your thoughts, especially concerning Navigational Captain Markova? At least for the time being, until the new commanding officer arrives, I have freedom in such reviews of after-action reports as the late Commodore's aide-de-camp. Her file," Sandy took a handful of steps towards the mag field separating them & hyperspace, and looked out at the blue swirl of hyperspace "Medically and tactically, she broke. A first year med student and a first year academy cadet could tell you that. But I saw something different, something in between the lines. Especially with her slicing abilities. I feel that we have a untapped potential, a rare find. A excellent navigational officer with slicing abilities could be....useful in delicate missions where the two are essential as one person. Your opinion?"

Hmmm, Business thought as he could have swore he saw the new LT flinch when a simulated round went off near her (he was on the other end of the assault line, where she couldn't see him; he tapped Tech on the shoulder and switched to a private channel on the helmet comms, "Hey, new LT is shaky." Tech turned his head her way and Business quickly brushed him a bit to distract him, "Don't look! Just watch her when it starts."

"You're nuts, man," Tech replied, "Better not hope the private comms aren't being monitored by the Old Man. He'll skin you alive."

"I don't think he likes her. Probably would love to find a way to get her out. You know this is his platoon. He didn't like
Captain Grimnar either. Rumor has it he paid one of the guys in the platoon to off Grimnar. You gotta admit, the captain's death was a bit strange."

"Killing one of our own? No way. Not the Sergeant Major's style. But hey man, keep it tight. We're about to begin. And no more crazy talk like this. That's an order."

Business scowled under his helmet at the pull of rank from the corporal, "Yes, sir," and switched back over to the main comm channel for the squad.

    "Ten Seconds..."

    "Nine..."

    "Eight..."

    "Seven..."

    "Six..."

    "Five..."

    "Four..."

    "Three..."

    "Two..."

    "One..."

Suddenly everyone's helmets were filled with frantic comm calls from other stormtrooper units on the make-to-believe battle zone....

"This is Squad B, we can't progress forward---"

"Williams, get your fire team out of the line of fire of those AT-STs!"

"Command, what's our ETA on air support?"

"Where did Squad B go? Thermals aren't picking---"

    "We're being flanked!"

"We need to move. Squad A, Squad C, get out ahead! Squad D, reinforce the flank!"

"Captain, the artillery fire will shred us to---"

"Anyone hear from Joker Platoon? Where is their Second Squad? We need that artillery silenced now!"

    "Command has been hit!"

"We need that artillery silenced! Second Squad, we need----"

"They're in the rear! They're in the----"

"This is Lieutenant Dock. I'm taking over command of the brigade from Company C. Company A was hit hard, but repelled the attack, but Command Element was lost. New Command to Company C."

    "Where's our air support!"

    "Will someone do something!"

"This is Company D, we're trying to advance. Taking heavy los---"

    "Sniper! Sniper!"

"Anyone have extra ammo? I lost my ammo belt in the charge."

"Company D, fall back! Company D, fall back! Back to the def----"

    "Medic!"

"Williams, AT-ATs en route! Watch their legs."

    "Copy, Frank."

"Does anyone see Squad B? I can't get them on comms!"

    "Frank, our AT-ST is gone."

"Hang in there, William. The AT-AT is punching through to you!"

"I just lost Lance---ah, I'm hit! We can't retreat to the other house. The artillery has us cornered."

"By the galaxy, William, the AT-AT is down by that artillery! William? William? William!!!!"

"Second Squad! This Lieutenant Dock. Silence that artillery so we can reconfigure our defensive posture. NOW! We can't move units to reinforce our attack or defense without being tracked by that artillery! Second Squad? Second Squad come in? Joker Platoon? Someone answer me!"

The voices and confusion kept going on, but the volume was suddenly lowered to a background distraction as Animal's voice came over the helmet comm, "Lieutenant, orders?"

Until she gave the go ahead, they would remain under cover to keep them from getting blasted by that artillery.

    Get a hold of yourself.

Elena shook her head, trying to block out the simulated voices as the barrage subsided for now. She turned to second squad and nodded at Animal firmly, a glint of determination in her eyes. "Second Squad on me! Advance and find cover." Elena yelled out to them. She turned and motioned to "Business" before pointing to a half collapsed fox hole that would provide more cover then the others if he stayed down. "I want you and "Eyes" to get on a comm. channel together; you're going to spot targets for him if you can. Stay low and go, I don't need you to get shot by enemy snipers. If you have to move then do it but don't advanced unless it's clear."

She turned back and crouched low. "We're going to move in two separate teams to flank them.If you have smoke grenades use them. " She got on the comm. to "Eyes". "I need to you keep their heads down; "Business" is going to spot for you. Stay safe." Elena turned back to Animal. "Let's move." Elena turned around the corner and sprinted across the devastated field to a nearby fox hole. There was an explosion to her left and Elena took out her blaster as she dug into the fox hole. "Someone throw a smoke grenade." Elena shouted back, before leaning over the fox hole a little and firing a shot. There was a simulated sizzle from the other side of the field as a "Rebel" fell.

Business slammed his armored shoulder into the foxhole he was directed to, unlatching the Model TD2.3 Electrobinoculars from his equipment belt and positioning his collapsed body best he could in the foxhole. He switched over to a tactical channel---which was standard---for sniper teams.

"You hear me, Eyes?" The stormtrooper asked as he put the electrobinoculars to his eyes.

Business could hear the discharge of the high powered RT-97C Heavy Blaster Rifle over the comm channel, "You're slow," the Chiss replied with dry humor.

"Yeah, well maybe you should remind our new Lieutenant---target three by three...got 'em---that you work alone."

"I doubt that would accomplish much," Eyes replied dryly, "Especially considering the Stormtrooper Corps' hierarchy system."

"Well, humor me and say---target, two, by one, by five....got 'em----that you should remind her you haven't had a spotter in your year with the unit."

"Once again, I doubt that would persuade her. She lacks significant knowledge of the operating principals of Second Squad and thus made a educated decision based on Imperial protocol and her own experience. A simple and effective decision considering her lack of experience with the unit."

"Are you---target, wind adjustment 2 degrees North, by three, by one....got 'em---saying that you agree with her?"

"Are you saying you don't?" Eyes replied, "What did she do wrong?"

"Well...nothing, I mean, look, she's new and---target, by eleven, wind adjustment, North 3 degrees, by nine...got 'em--- she is disrupting everything."

"So she hasn't earned the right to lead?" Eyes asked, another blaster shot echoing over the comm line between the two stormtroopers, "Despite the Corps saying she has? When will she earn your approval?"

"Look, we've had our traditions---target by eight, by six...got 'em----and its not normal like this."

"Or is it that she's a female and incapable of leading in your eyes?"

"No! I mean, well, Dark Battalion has always been male only and---target by one, by four, wind adjustment North by one degree...got 'em----well, its tradition."

"Tradition or not, she is here now. And you must accept that. If she fails, she fails because of herself. Not because of you. And if she succeeds, she succeeds because of herself. Not because of you. Let the Corps thin out the weak and unproven and let the strong and proven rule the day. It's the matter of things."

    ******************

    DW-418121 ("Animal"; Craig Anthony Stewart)

Animal released a handful of shots before ducking down. He knew he had hit at least one enemy tango before his two others shots went wild. Sniper fire from Eyes was efficient and on target as usual, although Animal noticed a slight increase in target acquisition. Probably because of Business' spotting. Nothing to brag about to the rest of the Battalion, but every little bit helps. Although Animal had to silently admit he missed Business on the firing line. You didn't notice something was missing, until someone was missing who was doing that something.

"Someone throw a smoke grenade." The order came over the comm.

"On it!" Animal replied crisply, throwing the smoke grenade a few moments later. The gray smoke mixed with the drifting smoke through the combat zone, but the thicker smoke from the grenade provided the perfect cover as the stormtroopers' helmet technology switched to thermal and provided the stormtroopers with an immediate edge.

Even before an order was given---to Animal's own delayed cringe, since he was also use to Second Squad operating as a unit with little needed talk or orders given---the T-21 operator laid down heavy blaster fire, sniper fire increased, and in a leap frog manner the squad moved forward providing covering fire, target fire, covering fire, target fire, and so forth. The advance halted fifteen seconds later.

His entire time moving forward, Animal was cursing internally as he knew the Lieutenant would blast them for not waiting for orders. While he would wait the almost for sure reprimand by the LT on his loosely commanded squad, Animal also knew that Second Squad was a well oiled machine that worked well together. So he would take the reprimand with pride in his squad's effectiveness.

This time, they waited, as the enemy started leveling artillery their way, most of it hitting their former positions behind them. From thermals and sniper rounds he had counted, Animal knew they had to be close to pushing the rebels' manpower limits.

But, he also knew, they were only half way there and still had plenty of ground to cover...

Elena stared hard at Animal as second squad advanced without her orders. She felt her anger flare and subside; instead she gritted her teeth and noticed that thanks to the smoke grenades, they were in a good position; at least halfway. That doesn't mean he and I aren't going to have a talk privately later. "Sargent..." Elena swallowed hard. "Since Second Squad seems to know what they're doing before an order is given; why don't you show me what you can really do as a team. I'll cover you're left flank, keep those smoke grenades up and take down as many "Rebels" as you are able. That's an order Sargent."

She looked back up to where "Eyes" was firing. "Good work "Eyes." I need you to start taking out those Artillery positions. Snipe them out; if you see anything that you can shoot to cause a little mayhem behind their lines do it." Elena lifted her head up and shot again before scrambling up and over to the next fox hole over on the left. "Keep up the nice work spotting "Business." , I want all of those "Rebels" taken out." Elena took out her pistol and kept firing at the "Rebels" on the far side with suppressing fire.

Animal cringed at the Lieutenant's tone of voice and just grated his teeth with a firm nod at her order, "As ordered, Lieutenant," he quickly got on the comm, "Second Squad, further advancement will be under my command. The LT has our left flank. DW-418126 & DW-418129, you hold the flank with the Lieutenant. DW-418124 & DW-418127, you reposition to the right flank and provide covering fire and Pop smoke to cover our advance. Tech and Face, on me!"

As the troopers previously listed repositioned themselves and laid down covering fire and took kill shots of opportunity, Tech and Face converged on Animal. "Details, Tech?" the Master Sergeant asked.

"I brought up terrain and tactical maps from the last orbital pass by a Imperial ship. Approximately fifteen minutes ago. I imposed most recently updated tactical maps on known terrain maps. I then relayed kill shots by Eyes and our own blaster fire direction. You'll notice," the holo maps displayed in each trooper's helmet, "That the enemy's firepower is less in Grid Three and higher amounts of firepower in Grid One, Grid Two, and Grid Four."

Animal nodded, "We punch through there. Any worries?"

Tech shook his head, "Last tactical updates put no unusual warning signs. Our attack has been very straight forward thus far, nothing to say that the enemy is hiding something and nothing to say that they have been forced to avoid Grid Three on our assault. I'm assuming its a manpower shortage."

"They'll probably have a blaster nest," Face said, noting the term used for a heavy anti-personnel blaster emplacement of some kind, "Behind Grid Three. Hidden, ready to catch us in the open for maximum effect."

"Bingo," Animal said, "It would allow them to spread out forces and condense as needed to counter. But, if we draw their fire..."

"Eyes can get 'em," Face finished.

Animal jumped on the comm, "Eyes? Business? We're rushing Grid Three, single file rush. Punch a hole for us on my command."

    "Copy," Eyes replied.

    "Copy," Business said.

    "Who's playing chicken?" Tech asked.

Eyes followed Animal's body through the scope as the Master Sergeant bobbed through the cratered terrain, keeping just ahead in the scope---there! As the three Stormtroopers had forced their way through to the front lines, playing off of each other's advance in a relative straight line while leap frogging ahead with blaster fire of their own to cover their advance, the other Stormtroopers in the squad kept covering fire while Eyes and Business provided the punch to the assault.

The attack had worked thus far: the enemy had to keep their defenses stretched out to cover all possibilities and were fooled by the heavy smoke and relative low number assault team that punched through their weak point. The heavy anti-personnel emplacement opened up---an E-Web Blaster Cannon hidden by visual camouflage technology and old practical tricks to the naked eye & sensor---just as Animal was within feet of the wall. Business had alerted him to cover when he noticed movement from the E-Web crew. The Master Sergeant was a step ahead of the first blast, which cooked the ground where he had been a moment before, before Eyes' sniper round cooked the gunner in return, then a second round a moment later cooked his assistant as the man tried to grab the gun's controls.

"Clear! Clear! Clear!" Business barked over the comm, "Go! Go! Go!"

If the Commodore had made mistakes, then he'd paid a heavy price for making them. Plans didn't survive contact with the enemy, that was presumed standard knowledge. And there seemed to be...more at work here than just the Imperials and the Rebels, that was her gut feeling. Whoever those Adults were, they probably meant business, and in Levric's line of work, business usually meant death and destruction, deceit and deception. Damage, indeed. And as much as Gwen fervently loved being alive, she'd find herself very much surprised if she were alive at the end of the war between the Empire and the Rebels who opposed them. If these Adults were worse...well, then, she'd be lucky to get the same send-off as the Commodore.

"Slicing is indeed a useful skill to have, though it shouldn't be the only weapon in one's arsenal when conducting a delicate mission," Levric said. "If you mean to recommend Markova to the captain for such purposes, then she should be slated for training in various skills across the ship, to increase her versatility. For example, she knows these big cruisers, but is she up-to-date on smaller craft? Does she grasp the basics of making repairs to her equipment in less-than-academic situations? Does she have any recent hand-to-hand training? These are some of the questions I would be asking in regards to Markova, or any other officers marked out for such missions."

Levric paused for a moment, then added, "And I suspect that our new commanding officer will have different ideas about how best to utilize those under his command. Any word on who's being sent to us?"

Sandy shook his head, "I don't know, to either. Captain Totter knows who, I suspect at least, but can't tell anyone. Whoever it is, I very highly doubt they would look upon Navigational Captain Markova's last mission with any favorable lens. Without stating the obvious, I think it would be good for her other talents to show through. It would help protect her from any knee jerk after action report discipline from the new commanding officer, whoever he or she is. Now, to track with your thoughts, I was thinking smaller craft, like a shuttle. Maybe a way to intergrade her into more special operations-type missions. It would certainly increase her stock with any new superiors and, with the proper cross training, she would be a great asset to have on any mission or on the bridge.

"If I set up the shuttle training, would you follow through with slicer training? I don't want to loose her talent and skills. After all, only real adults see such value in things beyond what a report tells them."

They were actually in the lift tube from the Passenger Transfer Tube when the thing halted just one level down, instead of two, and the doors started to slide open.

"Okay, that is a bit early." He noted with a frown, knowing that this was the level for the much larger VTTs, or Vehicle Transfer Tubes.

"Officers in the tubes!" Barked one of the two Naval Troopers standing opposite them, both moving to attention, shifting the positions of their main weapons.

"At ease." Steadfast frowned at the pair, not making any move to exit the lift. This wasn't his floor, anyway.

"I thought that only applied to the bridge." The CMO commented.

    "Why are we here?"

"Oh!" One of the now at-ease troopers pointed off to Steadfast's right, outside the lift, and his field of vision. "Because of 'im."

The floating, flattened black-and-white ball that was a Mark IV sentry droid, hovered into view, and entered the lift just above the Duro's head, and moving to a position above and to his right, and turning to face the open door.

"Security Chief Vasilevic thought that it would be easier to supply you with an on-duty droid, rather than one of the spares."

    "Well, I didn't want to leave a tube under-manned."

"I'm sure we can pick up the slack, Sir."

It did not even occur to Enoch that the crewman might consider his dubiousness as a slight. "Can we proceed to the hangar now?"

"Yes Sir. Just press the down arrow, Sir."

"Pressing the arrow, Take Two." Steadfast sighed as he sealed the lift, feeling the lift descend at a sedate pace. He looked up at the thing, that with it's stark white lower half, black upper half, little stubby 'arms', and two inconsequential 'legs' or fins, at the rear flanks of the white half-shell. The thing looked like something out of a youngling's nightmare. What a piece of sith. "How in the Core, did this thing get past Procurement?"

Deb raised an eyebrow as she looked over his bald green crown at the droid. "We built that, didn't we? Department of Military Research?"

"We built that?" He shook his head in disbelief and looked forward as the lift stopped a second time, the doors opening to show them the impressively polished black deck of the gargantuan Main Hangar. The place always seemed to him, more majestic and overwhelming, when he came immediately from the smaller forward hangar. "Well, where is this ship of yours, then?"

Debgate strode forwards, following him out of the lift, observing the space before the white-rimmed magnetic containment field with a frown, her index finger wagging at the now empty space. "It was there, Senior Lieutenant. I swear on the Tribunal."

"Oh, I believe you, Surgeon-Commander." He looked back up at her. "What kind of ship was it? Do you know?"

"I looked it up, afterwards. A Corellian YT-1760."

The former squadron leader nodded, his mind's eye throwing up a picture of the ugly-looking star craft. With a new Commodore coming aboard, there was no way a civilian craft would be left up here at the front, where it could be seen. No, it would be tucked away at the back, probably cornered in by an AT-AT barge, if the Hangar Master had any sense.

"Alright, let's see if we can find it. We'll give it a couple of minutes, then call Hangar Control, to see if they can clue us in." He fell in step with her for the first couple paces, then halted, resting on his cane while she wandered across the clear space, deeper into the bay.

Alex stepped to one side inside the box-like lift chamber, to ensure that everyone that wanted in, got in, then pressed the button to seal the burnished metal double doors, the lift ascending smoothly. Being one of those that brought up the rear Voss was thankful that he wasn't getting left behind, but with a difference to another of their little group being in a hover chair it was proper decorum to make sure the injured got priority.

On the way up there was some congratulations or whatever, honestly he wasn't paying much attention to them as his focus wavered to the recently departed. So many lost, and for what? So some people to avoid a civil war? To stop a mostly corrupt majority from taking over? Honestly it made him sick, made him wish they had just nuked the holes from the beginning. For the cost, at least this close, had been too high. Too karking high.

The doors slid aside three levels up, and they stepped out to see the double sentry guard presence of Navy Troopers, still at attention from the passage of the senior officers, and Alex could see the backs of Debgate andSteadfast in the distance, halfway through the PTT.

Saluting the guards as he passed by he ignored whatever muttering they may have had. Focusing on the group moving forward. Focusing on the Doctor, on the fear, on the anger. Focusing on something other than the loss as he willed himself to move with the others, numbly now.

Adrias beamed at the praise that he got from the Captain. Every Imperial soldier was looking for approval and recognition from the higher ups. It meant that their chances of climbing the ladder improved. He tried to keep an expressionless face. After all he was not a first year cadet.

The Sergeant looked at the prone body on the floor. Hopefully he will be able to shed some light as to who his co-conspirators were. Though that was unlikely, any half-competent terrorist cell tried to keep out the identities of most of its members. So everyone knew several people, which was not enough to reveal the whole cell. Besides the guy who got shot might have had more intel. Hopefully his belongings will reveal some more.

Adrias stiffened when more stormtroopers and an ISB officer entered. They did not seem hostile towards them, but he was still on alert. He saluted. The state security officer did not pay much attention to Adrias. It was fine with him, but he stiffened when he heard Vader being mentioned. He tried not to gulp when he realised that the Captain had been working with the Emperor’s Right Hand.

So the dead guy was some sort of radical. A sloppy one at that. Adrias snorted silently at the mention that he had turned for money. These were the worst. He could respect the ones who believed in an idea, albeit a wrong one, but to sell out? He could not respect that. They were not doing this job for the money. They were protecting the civilians and restoring order.

The ISB officer turned to him again asking for the blaster. “Oh, of course.” he turned on the safety and handed it to the man butt first. Adrias then turned to the Captain “I will hand you my report later today, sir.”

Elena watched out of the corner of her eye as she advanced to the left flank, taking out "Rebels" on an Artillery gun once she got close enough; laying prone and crawling her way up and over the hole they had dug as she killed the three crew team. She smiled with satisfaction as the "Rebels" Animal had targeted had been dealt with relative ease; and moved behind some cover as dirt and grass fired up around her from a thermal detonator. She winched as her ears rang horribly from the explosion and checked herself; but Elena was clear.

"Sargent send one team towards me to take out that crew of Artillery "Rebels". I want you to lead back towards the right flank, make sure "Eyes" has his sights on you at all times. I want the crew firing from their position to adjust fire and keep taking out targets; covering your back. Good work out there with that 'Rebel' crew. Very efficient." Elena complimented, ducking fire as she lay down further, firing back and missing a "Rebel" as the laser evaporated on an ammunition crate.

Kurt nodded and signaled them out the door of the refresher. Once they were past the exterior security around the refresher and the gathering on-lookers, he replied to Adrias' statement, "Good, Sergeant. Although I would caution adding in anything you heard from the ISB official, especially regarding Lord Vader. Its better to keep your head low in such manners----"

He stopped his own sentence short as they came into the mess hall which---minutes ago---was packed to the brim and now was a jumbled mess of personnel running to get to various stations or others cramming up front to see something. Kurt did a check of nearby emergency lights and then checked sentry posts within visual range. No one was rushing to some unseen emergency or sudden enemy attack.

"Hmmm," Kurt replied out loud, sharing a glance with Adrias, then reached out to a base member who was rushing out of the mess hall with food half stuffed in his mouth, "What's happening?"

The technician swallowed what food he had left in his mouth---obvious it was a lot by the strained muscles of his throat---and then spoke, "Incoming," the technician took a breath to collect his racing heart, "Incoming. We have wounded incoming."

"Wounded?" Kurt quickly raced through his memory to see if there was anything from military reports that would spark such a recollection; Kurt's puzzled face said it all when he looked at the technician, "Which unit got hit?"

"Not a unit," the man, shaking his head as he tried to continue on his path and away from Kurt, "Civilians."

As the technician ran away to his duties, Kurt shared a look with Adrias, "Lets get to the guest quarters and get out gear." The shouted title of Captain Stein drew Kurt's attention to a group of uniformed stormtroopers headed their way and one of them waving his hand towards them (one of them must have spotted him & Adrias). Kurt wasted no time in issuing orders, "To the guest quarters. Armor up."

    *********************

    Several minutes later

Kurt walked out of the guest quarters he shared with several of the stormtroopers and saw that everyone was gathered, some with helmets on and others not. Kurt had his helmet in his right hand. By now, a warning alarm was going throughout the entire complex for all hands on deck to assist with incoming civilian causalities. Various holo screen feeds throughout the base showed several shuttles & transports heading to or already landed at the base with even a local sailing ship bringing in wounded.

"On me," Kurt said as he started walking, his E-11 attached to his belt, as the stormtroopers formed up behind him. He put on his helmet as they walked towards the nearest turbolift, his HUD coming to life with recognizing a human interface. Communications, sensors, and other equipment in the helmet connected to the local Imperial network. Once everything was online, he activated his helmet comm to the group of Stormtroopers, "At ten hundred hours, the C-3 Passenger Liner Star Dream, crashed landed on Javin, specifically in the ocean roughly ten miles from here. Her crash site was just off of an island, so part of her hull is resting near shallower water. However," the stormtroopers entered the turbolift and it started downward, "No one knows how long the ship will remain stable until it is swept out to deeper waters. Military Intelligence believes this was a terrorist attack, utilizing the C-3 Passenger Liner to hit one of our orbiting defense stations above the planet. Planetary defenses had no option but to open fire to disable the engines. However, whoever was on that ship's bridge, knew what they were doing and punched any last power into the last remaining engine and did a last ditch drive towards The Complex here. Further anti-aircraft fire knocked the vessel off of its approach vector."

The turbolift doors opened to a waiting Imperial Dropship Transport for the 18 stormtroopers, "Because there is strong evidence to support a terrorist threat of larger significance---MI believes the C-3 was meant to weaken our defenses to allow a larger attack---all commands and units are on standby. Roughly half of the Quick Reaction Forces are being held back to respond to a larger attack."

As they reached the transport, Kurt kept talking as he waved everyone on board, "The other half of the QRFs and us are being dispatched with emergency crews to investigate the crash site, secure the trash site, and detain any would-be terrorists. We don't have any immediate intel on how many terrorists or which terrorist group," Kurt pulled himself up into the IDT and gave the pilots a thumbs up; as the IDT lifted off with two other IDTs behind them full of stormtroopers, Kurt continued, "Be mindful that civilians are suffering. But we cannot let their pain cloud our mission judgement. No civilians get on board the IDTs until we clear them. We will assist with providing emergency aid, life jackets, and other life saving tools. Some civilians may be panic or in shock and will try to pull you down or into the water to get help. Do not fire your weapon unless a clear threat presents itself. The Maritime Division will be on our tails by ten minutes. So we have that long until help arrives. Questions?"

"Copy, Lieutenant," Animal replied, then said, "DW-418126 & DW-418129, hold the left flank. DW-418124 & DW-418127, hold on the right flank. Tech and Face, advance on the LT for an assault operation. Eyes and Business, re-prioritize threat to covering LT assault team and secondary on me," the Master Sergeant knew that would leave him without support, but he also knew that---as he took up cover behind some crates on the right flank and just within the enemy's earthworks---that his sniper team and right anchor team had his back. His T-21B Heavy Blaster packed a punch and range with the scope, so he shouldn't have a problem taking out any advancing enemy tangos.

As the acknowledgments came in over the comm and his helmet sensors showed personnel moving around to their assigned places, he privately disagreed with the plan from the LT, at least, on face value. But as he settled into a comfortable spot that gave him an almost unobstructed view of all the artillery positions from a slightly elevated small hill at the far right of the earthworks and reasonable cover to boot, he realized that he probably would have done the same thing. Advancing full throttle into an enemy position would be the logical thing to do if the enemy was clearly on the run or falling back, this was not the case. Keeping a reasonable rear guard action in place in case of a counter attack was the safest way to go. It decreased your punching power on the assault team and forced you to rely on that team's own abilities to accomplish a very tight special operations assignment with a heavy dose of good luck. But, with only a squad of soldiers, it wasn't like they had a whole host of options either.

Personally, he would have spread out his rear guard action into a three man fire team and moved Business over to assist with him. While that loaded your assault team up with another trooper, it ran the risk of keeping a thinned rear guard element in case of a counter attack and your sniper alone. While Animal knew Eyes' abilities, the LT did not. And he understood that.

She was playing it tactically smart. He gave that to her. But sometimes you just had to be bullish and attack the blasted foe. As his helmet sensors showed the LT's assault team moving towards their objective, Animal released a volley of blaster fire towards three tangos, catching two unaware and spreading their insides for all to see from the surprise attack and another caught him in the leg and watched him craw to cover. Two guards and an artilleryman.

There. That should distract the enemy long enough and give the LT a little added edge to tip the balance of power. While that guided the ire of the enemy towards him (with Eyes to cover him), it also alerted the enemy to a possible threat. The hope would be that they thought Animal was the lone threat and not a hidden assault team as well.
