    In a college-level course on the History of Spain, I was taught that during the Inquisition, Ferdinand and Isabella promoted lack of bathing and an “olor santado” because…wait for it…the Moors bathed, and therefore, 15th century Catholics thought not bathing would mean they were closer to Jesus.

    (I took this course 25 years ago and it was taught entirely in Spanish so if any of that is inaccurate someone can call me on it.)

    That led to some pretty good jokes. “Olor Santado—the new fragrance from Polo” and my high school students talking about how close they were to Jesus after football practice.

    I don’t know which take is worse—Jesus loves the smelly people, or the best way to show class solidarity is not to bathe.

    OP on bathing also leaves out that bathing became more common when a link between cleanliness and a drop in disease was found…

    I’ve been realizing lately that there are an awful lot of people who can blissfully ignore how a work-of-fiction’s message applies to themselves by embracing suspension of disbelief. You can have two men on Star Trek who hate each other because they have inverted patterns of white and black on their body and have everyone claim to get the message and enjoy the episode, and still have people lose their minds at Kirk kissing Uhura. You can base a film’s entire premise on “Apartheid, but aliens,” and have someone refuse to see it as an indictment of *actual* apartheid. You can have a dude in Star Wars be an angry white boy fueled by entitlement and elitism to kill his fellow students, support slavery, and violate a young woman’s mind… and still have people think he’s the anti-hero.
