Pop vs. Soda vs. Coke

There are some interesting statistics regarding the ongoing debate over what to call carbonated soft-drinks.
Here are the current polling numbers for the US/Canada:

I call it poison, but that's just me.

 

Since I was originally told it was Soda Pop, I can go either way. But calling it coke doesnt make sense at all. ITS ONLY COKE IF ITS COKE. A DR PEPPER IS NOT COKE.

I've always called it pop.

 

But surely "Coke" is just an abbreviation of "Coca Cola". It would be silly calling anything but Coca Cola "Coke".

As for the general term, I think "soft drinks" is the best option, since "soda" originally means "carbonated water", if I'm not mistaken.

I'm one of the wrong ones who calls everything coke. 'Course, I can't tell the difference betwee Pepsi and Coke and deits of both, so it's all the same to me anyway

 

Well you could always call it "carbonated beverage sweetened with high-fructose corn syrup"

 

Yeah, I don't care about "soda" or "pop," but calling every carbonated drink "Coke" has always seemed ridiculous to me.

When I was little I was always told it was 'soda pop'...so either of those work.

 

If I had a nickel for every time somebody made a thread on this subject I'd have at least 12 nickels. Enough for a cheap soda.

 

I'm from L.A. and I think most people who are natives like me call it soda.

My boyfriend is from Illinois and he calls it pop.

 

Carbonated drinks = fizzy.

True. Out of the three, "soda" is the best choice. And I agree with the last sentence completely.

 

I call it lifeblood.

Seriously, though, the terminology I use depends on three things: the part of the country I'm in; the person with whom I'm speaking; and the extent to which I'm feeling mischievous at that moment.

 

WRONG!

It's ALWAYS coke. If you don't want an actual coke then you say DR PEPPER, SPRITE, ETC.
