The Islamic Republic likes to use the 1980-88 war with Iraq as justification for its oppression, and their go-to phrase when silencing anyone or, for instance, harassing a woman for not covering properly is "we gave martyrs!", as if society owes these people their obedience. This way, they like to project their moral superiority. Which is why the state has deliberately refrained from doing much to reconstruct the areas close to the border that saw the brunt of wartime destruction. This way, they will stand as indelible monuments to the war that we hapless ordinary citizens supposedly could not have saved ourselves from without the pious sacrifice of the islamists who gave their lives for Khomeini and his theocracy. In reality, the vast majority of those who fought in the war were ordinary conscripts like my father who simply fought to defend their country. The above video shows another example of this calculated neglect. With the war now 31 years in the past, the ridiculousness and cruelty of this propaganda tactic is becoming ever more transparent.

 

Kevin Smith's show this week was really good. Or maybe I should say has been so far since I haven't finished it yet, it's kinda beefy. The first 22 minutes and change were just off the cuff stories that run the gamut from inside-the-life of Kevin to horrible and wonderful at the same time for Marc Bernardin.
