PT Practical Effects in the Prequels- Sets, Pictures, Models, etc.

I remember one of the documentaries on the AOTC dvd saying that ILM built more miniatures and models in that movie than in episodes 4-6 combined.

 

Abrams interview with the associated press Sept. 2015:

Much as been made of Abrams’ desire to use as many practical effects as possible. Just look at the loving attention paid to the creation of new droid BB-8 for an example. Abrams’ merged all the tools at his disposable (abilities that George Lucas, making the first Star Wars back in the late 70s, would have found astonishing) with old-school effects.

“I can’t think of something that we did that doesn’t look and feel more authentic that I wish we had done differently,” he said. “Wherever possible, whenever possible, we tried to do things as much in camera as we could. And that meant a lot of artists on that side of things were building things not with pixels but with wood and paint and foam and actually constructing sets that we could have done in post. It gave the actors the actual location, the actual sunlight or stage light to bounce off of, and the movie a feeling of being in an actual location and not in an artificial one.”

Yeah the new Lucasfilm is keeping it real and not using any of this fake crap the PT is known for...

Not real enough. Hayden should have been lying on a real volcano with his feet dangling in a real lava bank.

Most of my issues with the use of CGI in the prequels come down to the scenes not really feeling tactile, with a disconnect between the actors and the sets.

But I think that the duel with Maul in TPM is an absolutely spot on use of the techniques. The actors are interacting with real sets, with CGI being used to enhance backgrounds and merge different areas. I didn't know that the area around the pit that Maul falls into was CGI, but everything appeared so seamless that my eye just naturally assumed it was there. Excellent.

Each prequel film had more models than in the total OT combined.

 

I think that with everything we see in movies today and applaud is taken for granted, but it mostly would not exist if not for the pioneering efforts done by those in Lucas' employ at ILM. There would be no Titanic, no Jurassic Park, no Iron Man, Avengers or The Last Jedi.
