Out of curiosity - since it sounds like TLJ is the really big problem with the ST for you, how do you rank TFA?

Yeah - TLJ is my least favorite. TFA was a safe yet decent film overall. It was an "introductory" movie so to speak and had to do a lot of setup. Yes, the plot felt very much like A New Hope, hence it was very safe. Even though many people are NOT fans of the prequels, I still rate TFA below all of those. So, TFA is my 2nd least favorite Star Wars film although its much better than Last Jedi.

Its really too bad about TLJ - there was some good things about it and I didnt hate it. But damn, too much of it drove me nuts or just rubbed me the wrong way.

    1. STAR WARS - Best of the bunch. Only issue is that it was made as a standalone, but its success changed that.

    2. The Empire Strikes Back - Because it’s a sequel, expectations low, but delivers and vies for #1.

    3. SOLO - Of the new crop, this feels closest to the originals. Imagine if this were made during Ford’s tenure.

    4. Return of the Jedi - Limited, but richly fulfills the OT arc and kudos for that space battle.

    5. Revenge of the Sith - From the opera scene to Mustafar...I think Sidious finished Padme.

    6. ROGUE ONE - Fulfilled the WARS in STAR WARS. Props for pushing the technology. I’m not a fan of single reactor firing.

    7. The Force Awakens - Good internal/character driven aspects/too weak on the external and backdrop characteristics. Repeat the motif but not so blatantly.

    8. The Last Jedi - A good film but a terrible episode. Ignored major/legacy character traits and plot points. Too independent from the existing narrative. Too antithetical and irreverent. Too meta.

    9. The Phantom Menace - I love TPM. It introduced new and interesting concepts regarding the Force and the GFFA. Give me politics and trade disputes in the GFFA. What’s past is present. Truth stranger than fiction. Needed better acting/dialogue.

    10. Attack of the Clones - The Obi-Wan as Phillip Marlowe is quite fun. Anakin and Padme’s love, not. Needs better acting/dialogue.

Wasn't sure where this would be best to post for anyone interested. I always found @MagnarTheGreat's tables very interesting. I know that they used to post some of those updates in threads like this one among others. The last update I had seen was from June 30th. Out of curiosity I decided to have a look if there were any notable changes in audience criticism on the sites with audience samples of of 1000 people or more. I had noted that some of the sites on Magnar's excellent table contained less than 500 reviews. Such small samples are too easily manipulated by campaign efforts and also, IMO, shouldn't be weighed anywhere near the same degree as sites in the tens or in some cases hundreds of thousands of people.

Magnar's comprehensive table also included %s of approval alongside out of 10 scores. Sometimes from the same sites which would then double-up. I don't see the merit in that approach personally and have excluded % of approval and focused more on out of 10 scoring systems. Somewhat related, Magnar's table frequently provided weighted and unweighted scores. Helpful to get a better idea of any 0 out of 10 scoring efforts but since some of those are harder to pull, seen less, and perhaps legitimately worthy of being excluded from sampling due to suspicious qualities I have focused only on the weighted averages that are more prominently featured.

What follows is an audience criticism update as of September 5th on many of the larger sample sites opposite the last known table data I pulled from Magnar's for Episode VIII.

    Large Audience Site-------5-Sep 30-Jun
    IMDB Weighted---------------7.2 7.3
    IMDB Unweighted------------7.0 7.1
    Metacritic-----------------------4.5 4.6
    RT score------------------------5.8 5.8
    Amazon US--------------------7.4 7.4
    Amazon UK--------------------8.2 7.2
    Best Buy US-------------------9.2 9.0
    Vudu-----------------------------8.9 8.9
    iTunes---------------------------6.6 6.9
    Douban-------------------------7.1 7.2
    Alocine--------------------------5.8 5.8
    Yahoo Japan------------------7.94 7.58
    Film Affinity--------------------6.2 6.3
    Average Score--------------7.06/10.0 7.01/10.0

Combined sample of over 700,000 reviews.

With months of home video and streaming factored in here I think this is around where things will probably settle for most part with this movie on average among the big sites until any younger fans too young to drop reviews right now come of age the way the PT fans did in their wave of defence.

Wasn't sure if there'd be anything notable but there were a few anyway. Japan and the UK continue their trends up (Something I'd noticed on Magnar's table before) and Itunes has dropped slightly due to how the star rating works. Many are similar to the start of the summer.

Before TLJ was released, I'd rank TFA as being just behind the OT. Then R1 came out, which I thought was better than TFA. Then TLJ retroactively made TFA worse. Right now I rate TFA as lower than the prequels. (although the prequels are generally pretty bad, I do get some enjoyment out of watching them.....at least when it comes to TPM and ROTS.)

I'll admit regarding one thing, each Star Wars movie brought in something to the table, both good and bad elements but really, I didn't like it the first time I saw it but dear, I adore it after rewatching it many times and looked back at my first viewing as the best one. It challenges us to think, and challenges our ideas and perceptions and does it in such a different way that it makes us answer our own questions. It's bold, but all movies have to be bold, but what makes it special is how it turns the table around, and trust me, what I saw was my Luke. I realised that all my head canon were never realistic and that legend who walked out of the Resistance base on Crait was the Luke I remember as a child and now as a teenager, the spark of hope that will inspire the Resistance to burn the First Order down.

I'm hoping Episode IX goes even higher than this. :)

Yeah, I think TFA ends up below the prequels for me too overall. Rogue One just kept gowing on me with each viewing and when you watch it between EP3 and EP4 it feels epic! A lot of people have a problem with AOTC but I find enough good in that film to enjoy it.

I think it is the sloppiest, most tonally inconsistent, most over the top and visually ugliest of all the Star Wars films. And the character development is ridiculous. To me, it just doesn't feel like Star Wars.
