The last version of this with RO had some people putting RO as their favorite. I’ll be interested to see if anyone lists Solo or RO as their favorite this time around.

If you took the worst two hours worth of scenes from the first eight SW movies and compiled them into one movie I would like that movie better than TLJ.

"Turkish StarWars" is probably more enjoyable than TLJ. Both lack coherence but in the first it adds to some bizarre mystique [face_alien]

The OT will probably be forever at the top of my list. But its so hard to rank them as the 'gap' between the films is not massive IMO. I've put Solo in the middle and even though I really enjoyed it, the true test of the quality of it can only come with time. How often will I revisit it? RO quickly became my go to film and I still enjoy that a lot. Whereas even though I own the blu ray I haven't watched TLJ since seeing it on the cinema.

First of all, none are bad to me. Just to make that clear. So, for example, I don’t hate AOTC or TPM at all. The lowest number out of ten I would rank a SW film is a six.

    1. Return of the Jedi
    2. Rogue One
    3. The Empire Strikes Back
    4. The Last Jedi
    5. The Force Awakens
    6. Revenge of the Sith
    7. A New Hope
    8. Solo
    9. Attack of the Clones
    10. The Phantom Menace

I have a feeling that in a few years we're going to have to have at least two ranking tables. One for the Skywalker Saga and one for the spin-offs.

Within the last two weeks, I have watched Solo for a second time, and rewatched TPM, AotC, R1, ANH, and TESB. My rankings have changed a bit, although I love all the films.

    SW rankings:

    1. The Empire Strikes Back
    2. Rogue One
    3. Attack of the Clones
    4. Return of the Jedi
    5. Revenge of the Sith
    6. A New Hope
    7. The Phantom Menace
    8. The Last Jedi
    9. Solo
    10. The Force Awakens

    1. Empire Strikes Back
    2. Star Wars

I don’t really recognize the other films as canon. At least not A-level canon. If we’re going to include B level canon and lower it would go:

    A level:

    1. Empire
    2. Star Wars

    B level:

    3. Solo
    4. Force

    C level:

    5. Menace
    6. Jedi
    7. Rogue One
    8. Clones
    9. Sith

    D level:

    10. TLJ

My tiered canon approach is weird because aspects of a lower tiered film in a higher tiered one doesn’t make the film version of those events a higher tier of canon - I just imagine them as having happened offscreen in that canon.

The first four films on my list I would consider great films in general; they give you a story, flesh it out with relateable characters, and thrill you along the way. 5-7 are what I would consider good Star Wars films but not necessarily great movies in general. 8-9 are in poor quality on both fronts.

Apparently Disney, LFL and most of the civilized Star Wars fanbase thinks otherwise.

Cut it short, the OT will forever be on top. Surrounded by a shield of nostalgia and memory that is unbreakable. Nothing Disney ever make will beat them.
In the same respect, the Prequels are at the bottom. The overarching story, world-building, audio and visuals were there, but... yeah. Great moments, but they are basically unwatchable for me now.
The Disney era films occupy the middle ground right now. They will never get better than ANH and TESB, and (I HOPE) will never get worse than TPM and AOTC.

    10. Attack of the Clones
So much theoretically good stuff is in here. Huge Jedi battles (something I know we can see done better in the Disney era). The Clone Wars. It is so much less than the sum of it's parts. It also looks terrible compared to the rest. Inconsistent CGI & compositing. Also it was filmed on an early 1080p digital cam. Won't be seeing a 4k version any time soon.
    6/10

    9. The Phantom Menace
Maligned for too much CGI but it had a ton of practical effects and more miniatures were built for this than people realise. Still looks good for the most part. It's a fun kids movie, which is what Lucas always said Star Wars is.
    6/10

    8. Revenge of the Sith
A step in the right direction, but too little too late. The big backstory events we all wanted happen here, all those important backstory events.... but still with the clunky dialogue & awkward meetings.
Still have issues with Anakin's motivations for turning but the third act is damn near perfect.
    7/10

    7. Solo
Only just saw this a few days ago. A lot to love. The cast are actually great. Nice to have a different kind of SW story set in the 'scum and villainy' side of the universe. Fun, with many caveats. It's a shame they may never follow it up.
    7/10

    6. The Force Awakens
NOT just a remake of the original. Watching this in a packed theater the first time was amazing. So much fun, but the film was never as good in subsequent viewings. What shines here are the cast, old and new, who carry the story with such energy and 'delight' that the recycled plot points don't matter so much.
    8/10

    5. Rogue One
Such a different take. I wanted more side stories like this and I hope we still get them from time to time. A brilliant cast of characters we get to spend too little time with. On top of that, a killer 3rd act and I just lapped up all that fan service like a kitten under a cow udder. Superb.
    8/10

    4. The Last Jedi
The middle act of a 3 act story is meant to put our heroes in a bad place. Test them, see them fail (and presumably return triumphant in the last part of the trilogy). The Last Jedi does that in ways no one expected, and apparently ways many didn't like. The film is about learning from failure, as Yoda tells us. It is not a perfect movie, but it is a damn good one imo.
    8/10

    3. Return of the Jedi
This was my least favourite SW for 2 decades. Never again.
I learned to appreciate Jedi in the post-prequel age. The good outweighs the bad, and like RotS, Ian McDarmiad's performance raises the whole movie. The entire saga rides on the Luke/Vader/Palpatine scenes, and they are perfect.
    8/10

    2. Star Wars (aka A New Hope)
Really it's a hair's breadth behind my #1. Some days maybe a hair ahead. What can I say. 'A life-changing movie'.
Yes it's a cliche, but it's also true for so many of us.
    10/10

    1. The Empire Strikes Back
Predictable choice for someone who grew up with the OT, but nothing about this film was predictable. Takes the fun space adventure we had and turns it on its head. Puts our heroes through the wringer. Expands the lore and the universe. The first sequel I remember that wasn't a sequel but a continuation. A lot of negative fan reaction when it came out. So please Lucasfilm, don't ever listen to what the fans “want”.

TLJ (Why I am here. A buffet of symbolism).

TFA (More fun than TLJ with better humor but not as thought provoking).

ESB (The best title and lives up to it).

ANH (The only one that can stand on its own; it’s as perfect a film as Star Wars can get).

ROTS (The best duels until TFA/TLJ and my favorite lines from Yoda).

R1 (this feels like it should be higher but that’s how rankings work. I find the side characters more compelling then the primary).

Solo (The most fun, popcorn SW flick of all).

ROTJ (Like Wall- E, strong start but weird finish that feels like it doesn’t match the first part).

AOTC (it has its moments and I enjoy the duel with Dooku).

TPM (I have trouble sitting through this one. Jar Jar issues aside, I don’t find Maul a very compelling villain. Like he looks like he was born a villain and had no say in the matter. It would be more interesting if he was a virtuous Jedi with that face).
