Saga Rank the Star Wars Films, TPM to SOLO

That line just made me pity her more than anything. It’s the kind of thing someone says when they’re broken and find it difficult to live with themselves because of the things they’ve done to survive.

TFA has gone way down for me since my last post on this thread, as I've become more aware of its flaws as an entry in the saga. TLJ is now below TPM, though I still can't say I outright hate any of the films. What happened to the meaning behind my current signature is definitely my biggest issue with TLJ.

As for TFA, while it was a good setup for what could have been a great trilogy (despite similarities to the OT, which wasn't necessarily a bad thing to me), it introduced several story threads that were eliminated or not followed through on, and solving them all in IX is not an easy task (Rey's parentage, the map to Luke, Vader's helmet, everything to do with Maz Kanata). I'm not saying answer everything in Episode VIII, but at least something like the "I am your father" reveal would have been warranted.

I ranked these on how likely I am to watch it on a rainy Saturday afternoon or how strongly I remember the movie with fond emotions. Each movie has its batch of strengths and weaknesses. SOLO-despite the jagged cameo at the end-is solidly acted, is well-paced, and gives me a sense of watching a graphic novel/ comic book unfold.

TFA's rank surprised me at how low it is. I simply haven't enjoyed the movie, although I enjoy many of the characters. TFA feels like ANH refitted with new bumpers and fenders. It's been a one-and-done thus far.

TLJ is higher because of its humor, having more grounding with Adam Driver, and that battle scene. It suffers with me because of the space chase motif. (Yeahhh... while you all flee, we're just going to hyper off over here, m'kay? And we won't come back with any real help like an extra ship or ships that could ferry folks off your stricken cruiser. --Because that's less plausible than sneaking onto an Imperial cruiser and deactivating a revolutionary tracking system.)

Commiserations to Ewan McGregor, Natalie Portman, and Ian McDiarmid for I, II, and III. AoC was the saving grace of that series for me, due in part to less Binks and more pew-pew-pew.

1. Return of the Jedi - There's probably a fair bit of nostalgia here and this was *my* Star Wars film as a kid.
2. Empire Strikes Back - Not just a great Star Wars movie, but legit a great movie.
3. The Last Jedi - Everything I wanted in a sequel trilogy movie - moving on from the OT with minimal pandering to the fans.
4. Star Wars - The original and loads of fun.
5. Solo - Just a solid little movie. Doesn't really do a whole lot wrong.
6. The Phantom Menace - Gorgeous visuals and design work. John Williams finest non-OT Star Wars work.
7. Revenge of the Sith - It's not the greatest but is a suitable wrap up of the prequels.
8. Rogue One - Jyn is way too passive and has absolutely no influence on the plot for at least two thirds of the film. The entire second act is padding to the extreme and is basically a remake of the first act (Rebels drag Jyn to planet to get info on super weapon, place is attacked, Jyn's father/father figure dies, they escape and the place blows up).
9. Attack of the Clones - One half is great, one not so. Love the Obi-Wan/Jango/Clone stuff but the Padme/Anakin 'romance' is poorly done.
10. The Force Awakens - Emperor (Palpatine's) New Clothes of Star Wars films. Wafer thin plot driving the characters when it should be the characters driving the plot. Near insulting levels of fan pandering.
