As I said in the other gaming thread, I do plan on playing the story mode eventually; but I don't want to commit to it for a month or so before THEONLYGAMETHATMATTERS is released on April 10th. I may start up the game at some point during the third or fourth quarter of this year. Maybe you'll see me posting about R2R2 in the "game you just beat" thread sometime this December.

I'm on my second playthrough of the story. Just started chapter 3, got all the early Legendary Animals killed and I have some fun hats. Love the snake bulldogger hat.

I keep riding my horse too fast in Saint Denis and I swear I've hit the same guy on the same street in the same way twice. He should be more careful. I swear it's keeping me from maxing out my honour. I'm so close to being pure.

I guess I spoke too soon with regards to the Online maps being free from scattered players. I visited a town to buy some new clothing and provisions for my character, and when I left the store a player immediately snuck up behind me, got the jump on me and killed me. At least the game makes it somewhat easier to set a bounty on another player. I was never a prick about that in GTA V, but if some jerk took it upon himself to keep sniping me while I'm trying to mind my own business then I'll lay the bounty on him. Have fun playing the game when there's an $8K+ bounty on you that anyone can collect.

Got in my first couple of online activities in the game. Was escorting a wagon; staging off NPC attacks along the way - but then of course a couple of real players came in and disposed of me and the wagon party pretty quickly. Later on I got involved in a fishing contest. Didn't win of course, but it was certainly more relaxing overall and I got some money/experience. I think I want to become a Bounty Hunter, but I need to earn gold first to buy the license.

Replaying this for the first time in about a year and it looks like they finally added the ability to fast travel to the gang camp.

Yeah. Though you can only do so from campfires.

That's fine. You can pitch a campfire anyway. This is how it always should have worked.

This is the only game I've been playing offline over the last couple of months since completing FFVII: Remake. I'm still in Chapter 3 with a little over 40% completion. I've gotta say IMO that while the characters and their dialogue have a nice flow to the story, there are things that just seem to make the game drag on. I seem to be riding around on the horse throughout the map more often than I'd like to; with nothing special going on besides the occasional moron hunter who gets himself caught in a bear trap. I don't do too well on any of the missions, but I'm more interested in completing the story than getting whatever kind of reward (maybe a PS trophy) for my efforts.

The side quests are really confusing. A Paleontologist asks you to help her find dinosaur bones. Um yeah, ok. Now what? No map? Nothing to point me in the right direction? The "treasure maps" in the story mode are even more confusing. At least in online mode, you open a map and the area gets highlighted yellow and you use the vibration on your controller (along with Dead Eye) to locate the treasure. There's a lot of side quests and missing items to locate that I just think I'm going to skip through the game's completion.

Replace horse with car and you've got Grand Theft Auto. It's the exact same formula R* have used for over a decade now.

A technically pretty but functionally empty map with very little to do outside of an overlong string of scripted story missions with restrictions put upon the player that would make even Call of Duty go "Chill out, let them have something to do."

I might give this a go as shock, horror, I’m not actually enjoying the new season of my beloved Fortnite.

I’ve heard the attention to detail is amazing, and that there was a programmer who had the job of making the horse testicles descend in warm weather, and retract in cold weather.

Cars go faster than horses. At least in GTA you an commit crimes, escape the law, and not get penalized by bounties or be chased down by bounty hunters if you happen to cross into the territory where there's still a price on your head. There is the Fast Travel option, but I've found more often than not that for whatever reason it's closed. I can understand if I've started a mission than I can't be allowed to use it, but why would it be closed if I'm not in a mission and all I'm looking to do is to go to the other side of the map to get to a mission?

Didn't they add fast travel back to camp? Not having that was my one big complaint about the gameplay.

And Punk, I say go for it. It's not a perfect game, but it has a fantastic story.

Are you sure that's not just for the Online mode (Fast Travel to camp)? In the Story Mode, "Fast Travel" is set up as stage coaches in towns and train stations. It doesn't really make sense that a stage coach would go out of its way to drop you off at your camp, right?

Here's how fast travel works: basically once you complete the first loan shark mission for Strauss, you gain access to the ledger, which you use to purchase upgrades and supplies for the camp. Use the ledger to upgrade Arthur's tent, which will allow you to fast travel from camp. If you're out of camp and need to fast travel, just set up a camp fire and it will be listed as one of the options (this is only available after you unlocked the upgrade at the base camp though).

That's the old way to do it, and yes that still works to travel FROM camp. But I thought they added in traveling back TO camp in a newer patch. Maybe I'm mistaken.

They did. I guess I didn't word it properly, but basically, if you're in the wilderness, you can set up a campfire and use it to fast travel to various locations, including back to the main camp.

Ah ok. I have over $3500 with Arthur right now, and have been reserving it because I wasn't sure what to do with it. I'll definitely upgrade his tent now.

And I just thought the notion of setting up your own camp was to cook things.

Well I finally completed the story mode. It shows 100% completion; though after the credits rolled it went back to where I'm controlling the character.

I thought the story was pretty well done. It took certainly long enough to get to the end. I get they wanted to add to realism by having your player ride his horse all the way from one end of the land to the other; but that still got tedious. Fast travel worked sometimes in Story Mode, but there were others when it just wasn't available at all. It was say something weird like, "can not fast travel because of nearby activity" even though I wasn't on any activity. I certainly haven't come close to completing all of the side missions in the game. I guess that's what's left after the credits rolled. The finale of the story mode was ok. I was prepared to toss my controller at the television and shut the game off immediately if Sadie was killed. She was easily my favorite character, bar none. I don't know if I'll get to see her again in this post-story mode; I remembered she said she was planning on leaving the area. I guess I should eventually play the original Red Dead Redemption to follow through John's story. I've heard some rumors that it may be remade. I'm curious to know which characters, besides John, recur in the original game. I know it's a follow-up story as I've read R2R2 is a prequel.

For anyone who has RDR2, they finally came out with a new update for the Online mode yesterday; complete with a new "naturalist" role and an Outlaw Pass that gives you some new in-game materials and boosts as you level up.
