Before video games became blockbusters with midnight lines, before ILM (Industrial Light & Magic) was need to make cutscenes, there were games that entertained us despite not looking overly realistic. They entertained us, molded our memories, and took our quarters, nickels, and tokens like candy from a kid.

If you do not recognize these names:

    • Asteriods
    • Centipede
    • Chuckie Egg
    • Dig Dug
    • Defender
    • Donkey Kong
    • Frogger
    • Pac Man
    • Galaga
    • Paper Boy
    • Rampage
    • Joust
    • Missile Command
    • Mortal Kombat Trilogy
    • Scramble
    • Space Invaders
    • Pong
    • Spy Hunter
    • Street Fighter
    • SiniStar
    • Robotron 2084

Then get out! And get off my lawn! :p

    Joking.. joking. :p

Here is the sanctuary of the games that required you to stand (we were probably thinner then because of that) and that eventually made there ways into our homes via Atari, NES, Sega Genesis, and collections like Midway Arcade Classic on the newer consoles.

Share your love of those bytes and bits that were black n white and neon colored and more!

This is not a cult.. well not an officially recognized one. :p

Nice. I like Atari games, like Super Breakout, Centipde, Missle Command, and Frogger. Also the original Donkey Kong.

I will have to ammend the list in OP. Donkey Kong created two franchises. Missile Command is fun, it was even featured in a scene in Terminator 2: Judgment Day with young John Connor:

One of my favorites was Joust, player that a lot with friends. And Defender & Defender II, we had a bet at who could get the higher score, winner got money or a prize.

I don't think I'd have the time or the patience to play one of these games these days. Just the other day I tried playing the little dinosaur jumping game on Google. I got about ten seconds into it before I thought "no, I do not want to commit to spending the next half hour trying to get a high score". So I just quit.

You mentioned Defender (total classic back in the day), but you forgot Scramble, which was also a big hit. I remember Zaxxon, too. And was that vector graphics tank game called Battlefield?

You are excommunicated .. please go through the revolving door. :p

    Joking. :p

You bring up a point that is the rub, achievements & trophies, and grand stories and free roaming vast worlds like Morrowin, Assasin’s Creed, and etc makes getting a high score seem dull; but yet meditation is dull, what if people decompressed playing a simple game rather than the stress of being top of Call of Duty, Halo, and other games online.

What if Retro Games could be a form of meditation. :p

We had Dream Machine around here. It was heaven.

One of my first home console games ever.

Arkanoid is a good one. Kind of like Super Breakout on steroids. I also like Rally X

Moonwalker, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Sunset Riders, Street Fighter II…the list goes on. There was something special about playing in an arcade.

I had forgotten about Rampage (I had that on Spectrum), I thought that smashing those buildings was the height of interactive gaming. Speaking of the Spectrum, Dizzy the egg was a big favourite back then.

The list needs Pong, Chuckie Egg and Frogger

But then you're going well into the late 70's early 80's for those I suppose

Street Fighter 3 is where it's at. I never got into SF2. The Alpha games are good.

I can never find the name of the home gaming system. It was in the 70's and featured a game called Grit Ball which was much like Pong.

In the 80's arcades Galaga and Spy Hunter are tied as my favorites. Galaga came to me and friends via a grocery store we passed on the way home from school. We were scared when the screen finally said, Challenging Stage, which of course turned out to be without danger. When I reached the snow in Spy Hunter for the first time I felt like a god.

Galaga is the best shooter ever. Hands down. I also like Galaxian, which came before and is a bit forgotten these days.

I played Galaga and Galaxian a lot. Your right Galaxian gets overlooked. Galaga said the joke louder. :p

A game I loved playing in the arcade - Starblade.

After Burner was also a fun ride.
