That 300 Nintendo games brought back memories. There were so many games by the early 90s. And so many of them fall under a certain type of game.

Did any of you ever play ‘The Three Stooges’ for Nintendo. That might be the worst game I owned. An aunt bought us like a half dozen games super cheap at Big Lots and that was one is them. That said it was unique.

I recently played Super Metroid on my Switch, and something about that game has always bugged me: why is it that its button layout is so different from most other SNES games? Having A be jump and X be the fire button is so unintuitive. A more comfortable setup would be B for jump, Y for fire. Was there any justification given for its nonstandard layout?

I don't recall it ever being brought up specifically. If I had to guess, it could have something to do with the proximity to the R shoulder button. Make it easier to R+shoot or R+jump+shoot, since those would (plus L) would be the most common buttons. It's odd in treospect, but was never really an issue at the time. They do have button remapping options in the game, though, as I recall.

I laugh when people say “button smashing is cheating.” Uh it was how you prevailed in the classics. :p

I have always changed the button setup on SM, to a more comfortable setting. I also noticed the same thing on "Super Punch-Out!!", which I also change to the NES layout with Y being the charged punch.

It is for weak players. Seasoned players can beat button mashers..

Love her in the Mortal Kombat games. She was Abeloth before Abeloth.

Try that against seasoned pros with A+ rankings. They can read you quickly and punish you something fierce.

If you beat someone by button mashing:
    1. You probably didn't beat someone who was very good at the game (no, having the move list memorized is not considered a sign of skill in fighting games, that's the barrier to entry, no, I am not good at fighting games, I cannot even be arsed to meet this barrier to entry). Good players know how to block effectively and mitigate risk.
    2. You probably don't like fighting games because you clearly didn't actually want to engage with the game on its own terms. So why are you even bothering?
I don't understand why people think it's worth bragging about.

Yep. I button mashed against my friends and lost every time. Likewise against total strangers. Look at YouTube videos. You can see real good players. Watch EVO 37.

EVO37 exists on a level none of us are reaching. How the **** he pulled off several perfect sequential parries is something else.

The IGN video on it is well worth watching. Short too, only 6 minutes.

Man the dungeon music in Orig Zelda was so eerie and creepy, those mouth statues, the claw hand and skeletons!

Yep. Even my friend could never pull off such a victory. Course, he stopped playing SF in 94.

One of my all time favorites games.
    And that music is classic.

Reminds of all the hours I spent exploring that world.
And asking friends for advice, looking up secrets in Nintendo Power. Making discoveries.

Finally beating that game was an epic day for me!

There’s a good 3D version of Zelda 1. It’s almost surreal how well it works in 3D…something it wasn’t even envisioned at that time.

would be kinda of cool to have the official game have a couple of rooms in a dungeon that matched that old style exactly in our modern 3D open world

The craziest thing about 37 that I didn’t appreciate until fairly recently is that Daigo is goading Justin into using his super at that position, because he knows he can parry it. That is some Ozymandias “I suppose I’d have had to catch the bullet” level ****.

I’d love to play this, to even have a Ocarina/Twilight Princess 3D style version of the original Zelda game.

The company I worked for a decade ago had an early Oculus prototype and it had it on it. It was crazy. But I'm pretty sure the game exists for desktop too.

    That is amazing!
I still would love for them to do it with graphics like Breath of Wind, and you explore. I bet those mouth statues in the dungeons are freaky in 3D!
