I have a special spot in my heart for Gladiator. It's the first DVD I ever owned. We didn't have a DVD player back in 2000 (until we later got a PS2) and I remember my dad and I watched it on my laptop screen with speakers hooked up when I was home from college for holiday break. I fell in love with this film. I annoying probably said, "Are you not entertained?" way too many times in subsequent years.

Revisiting it as of late, it looks kind of bad. There are a lot of the mistakes that I didn't see or ignored back in the day. It's weird because they are kind of glaring now. I still kind of love it though. The acting is great and I think it's still a great, heartbreaking story. The music still rules.

A few years ago, I heard rumors of a sequel. I don't know what the story will be, but it seems we may have a potential star: Paul Mescal. He will reportedly star as Lucius, the son of Connie Nielson's Gladiator character.
    https://people.com/movies/paul-mescal-in-negotiations-to-star-in-ridley-scotts-gladiator-2-report/

Who loves the original? Are you excited for a sequel? Is Hollywood creatively bankrupt?

If it’s not using the Nick Cave script then I’m not interested.

It was the first dvd I ever owned as well. I think it may have come with my dvd at Best Buy. I was amazed at how many extras came with them; booklet, photos, etc.

Love the movie. Not sure I need/want a sequel.

The only way I might be tempted to watch a sequel would be if Lisa Gerrard is involved again.

@DarkGingerJedi Gladiator was one of the first I got as well but my first was Home Alone since my first DVD player was actually a Playstation 2 that I got during the Holidays 2000. My God that feels like a different lifetime ago. Fresh out of college, single(ish was kinda with my college girlfriend but wasn't), living at home again etc.

Far as Gladiator 2 goes, I wouldn't say I am "pump" for it but definitely interested in seeing it once it comes out though I must say, I am more interested in Scott's Napoleon biopic especially it is being released on Apple TV therefore won't have to leave the house to see it. :p

Of the two, I'm probably a bit more excited for Scott's Napoleon this year than I am currently am for Gladiator 2 but, that being said.... a new Ridley Scott picture is always going to have my butt in the seat.

    He's doing a Napoleon movie?

I'm always down for his historical movies. He makes the era come alive in very realistic ways. Even though I hated the Last Duel, it was still fun to just watch the movie for the backgrounds, setting, clothes, and sets.

Scott still has the mojo, if he wants to make Gladiator 2, by all means let him do it.

The first Gladiator is an excellent if very unhistoric swords and sandals epic.

The second Gladiator can be as well… though it probably needs to just bite the bullet and admit a tragedy of reality that clashed with some of the fantasy: the Roman Empire sunk into deeper despotism and tyranny after Commodus’s death, rather than some attempt to reform, let alone to return to the Republic.

I’d love to see some crazy pseudo-historical take on the Hear of the Five Emperors or any of the other multi-Emperor civil wars. Maybe just have a gladiator get recruited to the auxiliaries of the Legions in one of these conflicts, and rise through the ranks, before abandoning to for elsewhere.

Wasn't that Ghost time travelling Maximus or something crazy like that? Because I am totally down with Russell Crowe Force-ghosting his way through the sequel.

It was a resurrected Maximus fighting the new Emperor Lucius who is kind of a-hole like his uncle then becoming immortal and fighting through all the major wars up to modern times where he works at the Pentagon. It had some interesting ideas but overall the execution was pretty silly.

In some other timeline, people are making entire three hour YouTube videos trying to figure just what the **** he was thinking.

His skill at historical action is partially why I’d be curious to see him tackle the Romans again - the opening battle scene of Gladiator was a bunch of Rule of Cool spectacle, but imagine if he actually tackled more authentic legion combat.

Or maybe even legion vs legion combat.

@DarkGingerJedi Yes as it's a Apple+ movie that comes out later this year. Judging by the cast (great cast btw) it looks to be focusing on Napoleon's earlier years but not entirely sure. Here is the Wikipedia page on it:

    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Napoleon_(2023_film)

Going to be potentially a couple bio movies this year as Michael Mann has one coming where Adam Driver is playing Enzo Ferrari leading up to the 1957 mille miglia which is famous for regrettably a bunch of people including fans dying at. It was so bad the Italian government outlaw the race soon afterwards. That is another bio picture I want to see.

It was a great set piece action spectacle. I’d love to see him make a movie about Julius Ceasar. Imagine what he’d do with Caesar in Gaul, or the wars of the Triumvirs.

Gladiator was also one of my first DVDs. It was Oliver Reed’s last role and he was excellent, as was Crowe and the whole cast. It’s still a great watch, but I don’t think we need a sequel. I think times have changed and I don’t know if people would respond in the same way to the movie had it been made today.

Yeah. He wrote this completely bonkers script about Maximus battling gods and monsters in the afterlife and being revived to fight in all the wars of human history from the Roman Empire until the present.
