Arena Rock Bottom, No Longer: The XFL Reboots in 2022

Didn’t see that twist coming, although given his partners it could just be for merchandise or... something.

 

He put out a statement saying he intends to restart the league.

 

I’m not saying that’s not a possibility but, interestingly, that statement actually does not say that, instead it just talks about options for live/scripted/whatever content, “relaunching” the brand, and something “the fans will love.” Could just be legalese or COVID making dates weird resulting in them wanting to hedge a bit, but it’s odd that they dance around it so much.

Of course, it could also be he gets on Twitter and is all “XFL 2022 IS WHAT’S COOKING” or whatever.

He doesn't play anymore but would been hilarious to see "He Hate Me" name on the same Grey Cup MVP Award as Doug Flutie.

What rules would they even play by if they were to do this? Would they try to fuse CFL and XFL rules together to have CXFL ones??

That and field dimensions, number of players, motion, fair catch etc. Both leagues have vastly different rules & if I remember right, the XFL was hoping to be perhaps eventually a NFL developmental league. How can you be a developmental league when you are playing by rules that are not even close to the NFL LOL! Just going to well interesting to say the least.

The real question is will they merge to become the CXFL, the first football league where every song played is a bad grindcore number?

 

Well I'm thinking this has something to do with the CFL trying to get a season off the ground. The CFL cancelled last season because they don't have Teevee contracts (they kept sending emails all season pushing back the start until in August they cancelled it) to play a season. and it looks like they won't get fans in the stands for at least the start of the season. (Although Ticats Caretaker Bob Young sent on an email today saying I look forward to seeing you all. And the Grey cup after over 25 freakin years is finally back in Hamilton this year). so maybe they're hoping they can hitch onto XFL TV Contracts to get cash and try to get a season going? The CFL Keeps promising a full season starting in June. Who knows? Maybe XFL will help get it going. Playing the whole CFL season in the US like Canadian MLB/NBA/MLS teams have been?

Better play 3 down rules is all I'm saying. Run, pass, punt!

They tried this already once.

 

yah I think as soon as an American team won the Grey cup they immediately folded the expansion. But if the CFL can somehow piggyback onto the XFL and get a season done somehow without getting cash from selling tickets and concessions, it'll be interesting if they can give it shot. (And they can turf them next season.)

Still hoping that if everyone is vaccinated by November I can see a Grey Cup in person though. And not have the Ticats choke horribly like last Grey Cup. (Even busted out a 20+ year old bottle of Ticat branded wine for that)

 

I actually think this has a chance to be a big success. The CFL brand brings gravitas and built-in fanbases, and the XFL brand brings big money and, with The Rock in charge, a dynamic media/social media presence. Combine that with the general festive atmosphere that there will presumably be with the return of live sports, and I think this could actually be a lot of fun.

 

Honestly if it does happen I just want the Rock to cut a CFL promo where he'll probably go off on him getting cut 30 years ago. Hell, he may show up at the Grey Cup! that could be the halftime show.
