Yes. Thats why i think its fair that some people has reservations on using him now. Finding the right balance between is the key. Most screenwriters makes mistakes or bad choices, or comes up with ideas that sometimes feels like madness. Having a team that can bring constrictive feedback is important. I am not sure where all this script notes ( rumoured) that haunts this script comes from. If its Disney that make adjustments to their strategy for Star Wars. I think the main reason for bringing in Kasdan and Kindberg - is to get the scripts done and to move forward.

LK is great at the craft. I doubt anyone would deny that. His problem has always been ideas. I remember discussing this here on JCF when it was announced that he'd come back to do Episode VII. On his own, he's been hit-and-miss, but as the hands of a visionary filmmaker who knows what they want, he works magic. He breathes life into stories.

I'm willing to bet he isn't interested in working for another George Lucas, though. He's mentioned in the past that he came back to write ROTJ purely as a favor to George, that he'd already decided by then that he was no longer going to write for others.
Of course, writing Star Wars means writing for Lucasfilm, but I think he came back on the condition that he'd have more of a say; some creative control. He wants to be a co-creator, not just the writer.
As an artist, that is his right. He should create on his terms. It should feel right to him. If it doesn't, he shouldn't do it.

The same applies to Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, of course. If she's going to do this, it has to feel right to her. It needs to be on her terms as well.

The problem there is that Larry has a lot of clout. But hopefully, if it's true that he's joining the team, he also intends to fulfill whatever vision Sharmeen and the others have.

For me even though Solo and TFA aren't the best SW movies he got one thing right and thats writing Han Solo IMO. But for all we know hes come onboard for this new project to tighten up dialogue maybe, we just don't know his involvement.

Most definitely. And I would also further clarify that by saying who's leadership he was working under. Back in the late 70's and early 80's it was people like Lucas, Kurtz, and Spielberg. Under DLF it was the likes of KK and JJ. Need I say more?

Yeah after RotJ he wanted to become a creator/director in his own right, and he did, with limited success. IIRC he turned down GL's offer to pen RotS. He came back to SW under Disney simply (and I'm speculating of course) because Disney drove a dump-truck full of money up to his house. He's a hired gun, same as Sharmeen. They're not gonna have total creative freedom (same with Kinberg) as everything is going to have to ultimately go thru KK and her board, which again, is the reason I believe Knight got fed up and left the project. At this point anyway I'm considering this Kasdan rumor to be just that-a rumor. I'll believe it when we get more reliable info.

There are thousands of brilliant screenwriters out there. Many have decided to work mainly in TV, where they can better flex their talents (Beau Willimon, for example), but there’s no reason why these very talented screenwriters can’t be brought into big film projects. Plus, there continue to be films with great writing (the Green Knight comes to mind first for me), so I’m not quite sure where this critique comes from.

The TV/streaming angle is a good one, i agree. Lots of talent there. Wish Hollywood studios looked in that direction when hiring. I think my post was more a critique of that. Studios relying on the same pool of high profile writers, that just polish reboots of big concept films of franchises that are barely alive. And they can look beyond the Anglo-American market as well. I bet Studio Ghibli or some Werner Herzog clone could have breathed fresh life into a Star Wars story. There is a Pakistani born documentary filmmaker still attached to the project, so maybe thats a start.

Exactly that... there's lots of good writers out there... it's just that the pool 'Hollywood' tends to draw from is a relatively small one. Lucasfilm, IMO, tend to get caught between wanting to cast the net wider whilst being inclined to edge their bets. Those with the best ideas/scripts probably can't even get close to a meeting because they are too unknown. However, that shouldn't be conflated with just bad choices.

They did get Damon Lindeolf who has a whole lot of awards to his name, script didn't turn out good enough for LFL but I don't think they're afraid to cast their net wider

Lindelof is not that great. Steven Knight is. And he was dropped too.

I don’t think Lindelof’s script was deemed “not good enough”, given some of the turgid stuff DLF have released, but rather it sounds like Lucasfilm didn’t like the direction of travel of Lindelof’s script.

I’m encouraged by the time to get it right talk. The ST suffered from the outset, IMO, because TFA was rushed.

These media sites keep asking, but it honestly sounds like she knows barely anything.

She's been told the 'idea of the story' from KK, which she loves and is very excited to film more SW. And who wouldn't.

She claims to share all the script's secrets with her husband and kind of knows the procedural route for how this movie is being made and that they have more time to do it (more so than during her time on the ST). Which is a great thing to hear.

But since there's no approved script, and multiple failed drafts, I doubt she knows anything other than that core 'idea' of a story. And whatever that idea is, its apparently given LFL a hard enough time nailing down to get right, to the point that her Rey Movie might now be a saga future trilogy. Who knows.

Given that they just got a new writer, it'll probably be another 6 months before we hear of anything approved, or yet another quitting/firing.

Lindelof wanted an older actress to play mentor Rey. That's one of the main reasons he left the project. That was his vision for the story and he didn't want to compromise.

So whats the latest news and rumors about this movie? Is it still happening or part of Simon Kinberg trilogy? No new Daisy Ridley gospel and Sharmeen not been mentioned for a long time now. There was rumors of this and Shawn Levys being connected or that Shawn Levy would replace Sharmeen.

Right now we got The Mandalorian and Grogu, Shawn Levy with Ryan Gosling not connected to the saga. James Mangold Dawn of the Jedi, and then maybe this movie. So if we get one movie a year, it will be 2028-2029 for this movie?

I've been saying since the Kinberg news came out that I think this and any other Rey-related movies are all part of the same trilogy.

I think they are all different movies attached to different concepts. They may want Rey in them all. I don't think Disneys mindset is the same as the fans mindset on it all. The fans want a basic trilogy that feels like an extension of the the episode movies moving forward. While Disney may look at it less as that and more as quantity is more important. Sure you can have a movie every 3-4 years orrr you can continue to try and marvel out Star Wars. Why would you Marvel out Star Wars? Because even if the box office is never as high as it once was, they can continue to make money from them through Disney+ and sales of Digital media and discs for years to come.

Aslong as they keep a fairly decent box office number compared to their budget, they will still make money.

    Incoming new writer: George Nolfi.

    From Hollywood Reporter:

George Nolfi, known for his screenplay work on movies such as The Bourne Ultimatum and Ocean’s 12, has been tapped to write New Jedi Order, the Daisy Ridley-centric Star Wars movie.

The hiring signals continued faith in the project, which was announced to great fanfare almost two years ago at Star Wars Celebration in London, but has seen several high-profile writers fall into the trash compactor.

Documentary filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is due to make her narrative feature debut with the project, with Ridley due to reprise the role of lightsaber-wielding Rey Skywalker, the character she played Disney’s sequel trilogy. The new story is said to take place 15 years after the events seen in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker, with Ridley’s character now a mentor a new crop of Jedis.

The script delays have pushed back any hoped for production starts for the project, which at one point was being eyed to follow the recently wrapped feature The Mandalorian and Grogu, which will be released May 22, 2026. Instead, the next Star Wars movie that will shoot will be the untitled project from director Shawn Levy. That one got a major boost by capturing the interest of Ryan Gosling, who is now in negotiations to star in it, as The Hollywood Reporter exclusively revealed this week.

Nolfi is known for writing elevated thrillers across a variety of genres and for establishing strong relationships with his actors. He worked on two Bourne action thrillers with Matt Damon, not to mention Ocean’s 12, before going on to make his directorial debut with The Adjustment Bureau, a 2011 sci-fi thriller that starred the actor as well as Emily Blunt. He directed and co-wrote 2020’s The Banker, a period race drama that starred Anthony Mackie and Samuel L. Jackson, and then reunited with Mackie for 2024’s Elevation, an indie post-
    apocalyptic thriller.
