EPILOGUE

Han took a deep breath, letting his eyes flutter shut. His wife rested a hand on his shoulder in a simple, comforting gesture. "You alright?" she asked softly.

"Yeah. Yeah, I'm fine." He was lying and they both knew it.

Leia wondered if it would have been kinder for Jaina and Kyp to have died. There was something about the finality of death, the closure. She knew how it ripped Han apart from the inside every time they visited their daughter and son-in-law. Somehow, it was even harder for him than for her. Jaina had always been a daddy's girl; they related to each other in a way Leia could not. They had shared the same loves and interests; they had been most alike in personality. In earlier times, Leia had often wished she had the same bond with her daughter that Han had.


And Kyp? She had come to care about him, when he began dating Jaina, because of Han that Kyp escaped from Kessel. It had been Han that had gone after Kyp when he had fallen. Han had always been Kyp's staunch defender and ally. Kyp had, in effect, been another son to Han.

These bonds made it all the worse for Han to see his only daughter as a raving lunatic. When Kyp, too, had lost his mind, it had been Han that was struck the hardest.

It wasn't fair, she thought angrily. They'd already lost their youngest son. It wasn't fair for them to have to lose their daughter and Kyp as well.

She knew that Han still hoped. He still clung to the thin shred of hope that someday, Jaina and Kyp would recover. That the empty shells would become, once again, the daughter and son he had loved. It was, perhaps, not unlike her own denial of Jacen's supposed death.

Only then, she had believed in her child's eventual return, and others had doubted. Fate, she decided, had a sense of irony.

Her daughter was gone, and so was Kyp. Their bodies were still here, still walking, still living, but their souls were gone. Jaina would never again be who she once was. Neither would Kyp. Part of her was annoyed with Han for continuing to insist that they would get better. The other felt guilty for her lack of faith.

"Sweetheart?" Han asked cautiously, easing her out of her reverie. His hand was on the switch to open the door.

"Yeah." She shook her head slowly, steeling herself before opening the door. "Yeah, I'm fine."
"No, you're not. Neither of us are." He took a deep breath and squeezed his wife's hand. With the other, he triggered the opening mechanism and the door slid open.

Jaina stood at the wall dumbly, tracing paint splatters with idle fingers. Sitting on the bed was Kyp, grey-streaked hair hanging limply into his face. He turned blank, black-hole eyes to them. "Hello," he greeted dully, without inflection. "Who are you?"

Wow, that was great! It was weird that Kyp went insane, too. Now neither of them will know who the other is.

 

I am sad and almost crying, and yet was distracted by PunkRockRebelTKDjo's sig. *stabs it for being too funny* *stabs Monty Python and the Holy Grail, also*

I do not like that Jaina and Kyp are now both in this state, and yet I feel strangely reassured that they're together now as well.

A fabulous ending for a brilliant story.

Happy holidays indeed. How am I supposed to have a merry Christmas if Kyppie is insane? Huh, huh, huh?

I loved it though. Wonderfully written. Superb job.

 

Hmm. I don't know whether to be relieved that Kyp isn't depressing himself over Jaina anymore or to be upset that they are both lost to everyone else.
I think I'm currently going with both.
This was a really intriguing story. Great job.
